Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: Something has changed

Lila didn't sleep well that night.

It wasn't fear that kept her awake, but the constant replay of what had happened. The flickering numbers, the system warning, and most of all—the moment her own danger level appeared.

That shouldn't exist.

She stared at the ceiling for a long time before finally sitting up, pressing her fingers lightly against her temple as if that could steady her thoughts.

"It wasn't a dream…"

The words felt unnecessary the moment she said them.

Of course it wasn't.

Everything had been too clear. Too real.

Her gaze drifted across the room, and that was when she noticed it.

A faint number hovered above her desk.

[Danger Level: 2]

Lila stilled.

"…What?"

She blinked, expecting it to disappear.

It didn't.

The number remained, flickering slightly as if unstable but very much present.

Slowly, she stood and walked closer. Her movements were careful, measured, like she was approaching something fragile—or dangerous.

She reached out.

Her fingers passed through empty air.

Nothing.

But the number reacted.

[2 → 3 → 2]

Lila's eyes narrowed.

"So it responds…"

Not like before. Not tied to a person. Not fixed.

Her thoughts moved quickly, connecting pieces.

Yesterday, she touched Alex.

The system reacted.

Something changed.

And now…

Even objects had values?

Or—

Her expression darkened slightly.

"…something was left behind."

A knock interrupted her thoughts.

"Lila? You'll be late."

Mira.

Lila's expression shifted instantly, her features softening into something gentle and harmless.

"I'm coming."

Her voice was calm. Normal.

But as she picked up her bag, her eyes flicked once more to the number above the desk.

It was still there.

Watching.

The walk to school felt different.

Not because anything had changed—

But because she had.

Every person she passed carried a number above their head. Most were low, predictable, easy to ignore.

Until she reached the school gate.

Lila slowed.

Something felt… off.

At first glance, everything looked normal. Students chatting, laughing, moving in small groups.

But the numbers—

They were higher.

A boy walking past her had his value shift from 14 to 22.

Another from 9 to 17.

Lila's gaze sharpened.

That wasn't random.

It was too consistent.

"…It's spreading."

Her fingers tightened slightly around her bag strap.

Either the system was becoming unstable—

Or something was interfering with it.

And then she felt it again.

That same subtle shift from yesterday.

Lila turned.

Her eyes scanned the courtyard.

And then she found him.

Alex stood under the shade of a tree, watching her.

Not pretending.

Not hiding.

Just watching.

Lila didn't look away this time.

Their eyes met, and for a moment, everything else faded.

Above his head—

Nothing.

Still nothing.

No number. No flicker. No distortion.

And somehow, that felt worse than before.

Lila took a step forward.

Then stopped.

Because suddenly—

Every number around her flickered.

Violently.

The world seemed to tilt for a second, like something had gone out of sync.

Her vision blurred slightly as values spiked, dropped, and distorted all at once.

Too much.

Too fast.

Lila steadied herself, forcing her breathing to remain controlled.

This wasn't normal.

Across the courtyard, Alex tilted his head slightly, watching her reaction.

Like he expected this.

Like he was waiting for it.

Then, slowly, he raised his hand.

It wasn't a wave.

Just a small, deliberate motion.

And instantly—

Everything stopped.

The flickering.

The distortion.

The instability.

Gone.

The numbers returned to normal.

The world settled.

Silence.

Lila's eyes widened slightly.

Her heart skipped once.

Because she understood.

Not everything.

But enough.

He did that.

Across the distance, Alex smiled.

Faint.

Knowing.

As if he had just confirmed something.

Lila didn't react outwardly.

Didn't move.

But her thoughts sharpened.

So it wasn't just hidden.

He could influence it.

Or worse—

He could interfere with her ability.

Her fingers curled slightly.

"What exactly are you…" she murmured under her breath.

The bell rang, breaking the moment.

Students moved again. Voices returned. The illusion of normalcy settled back into place.

Alex turned and walked away without another glance.

Unbothered.

Like nothing had happened.

Lila watched him go, her gaze steady.

Then her lips curved faintly.

"This isn't over."

She stepped forward, heading toward the building.

But just as she crossed the gate—

Something flickered at the edge of her vision.

Faint.

Unstable.

Almost easy to miss.

A message.

[System Warning: User Condition Altered]

Lila stopped.

Her breath slowed.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

"User…?"

The message disappeared as quickly as it came.

No explanation.

No details.

Just that.

Lila looked ahead, toward where Alex had vanished.

Something had changed.

Not just the system.

Not just the world.

Her.

And this time…

She wasn't the only one who knew it.
