Chapter 12 - Chapter 12:Lines That Shouldn’t Be Crossed

Lila didn't rush.

She never rushed anymore.

Every step she took down the hallway was measured, her expression calm, her thoughts anything but.

The image from yesterday lingered in her mind.

Ryan's hand on her stepsister's waist.

Their laughter.

The way they didn't even try to hide it.

In her last life, she had been blind.

Not this time.

Her fingers curled slightly.

One mistake was enough.

This time, she would see everything.

Numbers flickered above the students around her.

[Danger Level: 6]

[Danger Level: 14]

[Danger Level: 3]

Useless.

None of them mattered.

Her gaze shifted forward.

Then stopped.

Ryan.

He was standing near the lockers, talking like nothing had happened.

Above his head—

[Danger Level: 42]

Lila's eyes narrowed slightly.

Higher than before.

Interesting.

So guilt… or intent… does affect it.

Ryan noticed her.

Of course he did.

His face lit up instantly, like he had been waiting.

"Lila," he called, walking toward her.

Like nothing had changed.

Like nothing had been exposed.

Lila watched him approach.

Calm.

Silent.

Observing.

"Where were you yesterday?" he asked, stopping in front of her. "I couldn't find you after class."

Lie.

Her eyes flickered upward again.

[Danger Level: 47]

It rose.

Just from that sentence.

Lila almost smiled.

So it reacts to deception too.

"I left early," she said simply.

Ryan sighed, running a hand through his hair. "You should've told me. I was worried."

[Danger Level: 53]

Higher.

Faster.

Lila tilted her head slightly.

"You were?"

Something in her tone made him pause.

Just for a second.

Then he smiled again. "Of course. You're my girlfriend."

Girlfriend.

The word felt distant.

Irrelevant.

Lila held his gaze.

Then—

"Walk with me."

Ryan blinked, surprised.

But pleased.

"Yeah… sure."

They walked side by side down the hallway.

To anyone watching—

They looked normal.

Perfect, even.

But Lila was counting.

Watching.

Waiting.

Each second stretched.

Each step measured.

Then—

She stopped.

Right in front of a classroom door.

Ryan turned to her. "What is—"

Lila stepped closer.

Close enough that only he could hear her.

"Since when?"

Ryan froze.

Just slightly.

"…Since when what?"

Lila's eyes didn't leave his.

"You and her."

Silence.

A long one.

Ryan's smile faded.

Not completely.

But enough.

"You're overthinking," he said lightly.

[Danger Level: 61]

Lila let out a quiet breath.

Then nodded.

"Maybe."

She stepped back.

Just like that.

Like she didn't care.

Like she believed him.

Ryan relaxed almost instantly.

"Yeah. You know how people talk—"

Lila turned away before he finished.

"See you later."

And she walked off.

Leaving him there.

Confused.

Uncertain.

And for the first time—

Uneasy.

Lila didn't go far.

She stopped at the corner.

Out of sight.

Then looked back.

Ryan was still there.

Watching her leave.

His expression no longer relaxed.

No longer confident.

Good.

She had planted doubt.

And doubt…

Was the beginning of collapse.

But just as she turned—

She felt it.

That same shift.

That same wrongness.

Her body stilled.

Slowly—

She looked up.

At the reflection in the classroom window beside her.

And there—

Behind her—

Alex.

Standing a few steps away.

Watching.

Of course he was.

Lila didn't turn immediately.

"Following me now?" she said calmly.

His voice came, soft and unreadable. "You're interesting today."

Lila turned.

Their eyes met.

Sharp.

Quiet.

Dangerous.

"What do you want?" she asked.

Alex stepped closer.

Not too close.

Just enough.

"I'm curious," he said. "You're changing things."

Lila's gaze hardened slightly.

"So?"

"So…" He tilted his head. "That usually comes with consequences."

Lila didn't respond.

Because she already knew that.

He studied her.

Longer than necessary.

Then—

"Ryan," he said suddenly.

Lila's eyes flickered.

Just slightly.

Alex noticed.

Of course he did.

"He's not the biggest problem you have," Alex continued.

Something in his tone—

Was different.

Not mocking.

Not playful.

Serious.

Lila's brows drew together faintly.

"Then what is?"

Silence.

Alex's gaze held hers.

Then—

For a split second—

Something flickered above his head.

[Danger Level: ???]

Lila's breath slowed.

There it is.

But before she could focus—

It vanished.

Like always.

Alex stepped back.

Like he had said too much.

"Stay careful, Lila."

And then—

He turned.

Walking away.

Just like that.

Leaving her with nothing.

Again.

Lila stood still.

Thinking.

Analyzing.

Ryan. Her stepsister. Her family.

And now—

Alex.

A variable she couldn't control.

Her fingers tightened.

Then I'll learn.

I'll break it down piece by piece.

Just like everything else.

She exhaled slowly.

Then started walking again.

But this time—

Her steps slowed.

Because ahead—

Someone was standing there.

Waiting.

Her stepsister.

Leaning casually against the wall.

Smiling.

Too sweet.

Too fake.

"Well…" she said, pushing herself off the wall. "You look busy lately."

Lila didn't stop.

"Say what you want."

Her stepsister laughed softly, walking beside her.

"You've changed," she said. "It's almost scary."

Lila didn't respond.

Didn't look at her.

But above her stepsister's head—

The number burned.

[Danger Level: 91]

High.

Unstable.

Dangerous.

Her steps slowed slightly.

Good.

Now things were getting clearer.

"You should be careful," her stepsister added lightly. "Not everything is as simple as you think."

Lila finally stopped.

Then turned.

Their eyes met.

Cold.

Sharp.

"You mean like you and Ryan?" Lila said.

The smile disappeared.

Just for a moment.

Then came back.

But thinner.

"That's a dangerous accusation."

[Danger Level: 95]

Higher.

Lila nodded slightly.

"Good."

Her stepsister blinked.

"Because I'm done pretending."

Silence fell between them.

Heavy.

Tense.

Then—

Lila walked past her.

Without another word.

The hallway felt different now.

Heavier.

Like something had shifted.

And for the first time—

Lila felt it clearly.

She wasn't just reacting anymore.

She was moving pieces.

Changing outcomes.

Altering the future.

But—

That also meant something else.

Others would start moving too.

Behind her—

Footsteps echoed.

Not one.

Not two.

Several.

Lila didn't turn.

Didn't react.

But her senses sharpened.

Because above the reflections in the glass—

Numbers were rising.

[Danger Level: 34]

[Danger Level: 56]

[Danger Level: 72]

Her heartbeat slowed.

That wasn't normal.

That wasn't random.

That was—

Coordinated.

Her fingers twitched slightly.

Then—

She stopped walking.

Silence.

The footsteps stopped too.

Lila's eyes narrowed.

Slowly—

She turned.

The hallway behind her was empty.

No one.

Nothing.

Just stillness.

Her gaze shifted upward.

Scanning.

Searching.

And then—

For a split second—

Above the empty space—

A number flickered.

[Danger Level: 100]

Lila's breath caught.

Gone.

Just like that.

Her pulse didn't spike.

Didn't race.

It dropped.

Cold.

Heavy.

Because she understood something now.

Something dangerous.

She wasn't the only one watching.

Her voice was barely a whisper.

"…So it's starting."

No response.

No movement.

Nothing.

But the feeling remained.

Watching.

Waiting.

Hunting.

Lila's lips curved slightly.

Not fear.

Not panic.

But something sharper.

"Good."

Her eyes hardened.

Because this time—

She wasn't the prey.

But as she turned to leave—

Her vision flickered.

Just for a second.

And reflected in the glass—

Not one.

Not two.

But multiple numbers.

Stacked.

Overlapping.

Glitching.

All locked onto her.

[Danger Level: 100]

[Danger Level: 100]

[Danger Level: 100]

Her steps halted.

Her breath slowed.

Her mind went still.

Because this time—

It wasn't disappearing.

It wasn't hiding.

It was clear.

Direct.

And aimed at her.

Lila's fingers tightened slowly.

Her voice dropped.

Barely audible.

"…What did I just trigger?"
