Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: Lights Out

The lights went out at exactly 8:47 PM.

No warning.

No flicker.

Just darkness.

Lila stopped walking.

The street had been quiet before, but now—

It was wrong.

Too still.

Too silent.

Her breathing slowed, controlled, as her eyes adjusted to the dark.

This wasn't normal.

Not a simple outage.

She could feel it.

That same presence.

Closer than before.

Watching.

Waiting.

Her fingers curled slightly.

So it's starting.

Around her, faint numbers flickered above passing figures in the distance—people who hadn't even noticed the blackout yet.

[Danger Level: 6]

[Danger Level: 12]

Normal.

Unaffected.

But then—

A glitch.

Sharp.

Violent.

The numbers distorted.

[ERROR]

[ERROR]

Lila's eyes narrowed.

"…Now."

Something moved behind her.

Fast.

Too fast.

Lila turned—

Just in time to feel it.

A sudden force brushed past her shoulder, missing her by inches.

Her body reacted instantly.

She stepped back, pivoting sharply.

Nothing.

Empty street.

But the air—

Felt heavy.

Like something invisible was standing right in front of her.

Watching.

Her heartbeat stayed steady.

"I'm not dying again," she said quietly.

No fear.

Just fact.

Then—

It came again.

A blur.

From the side this time.

Lila moved.

Faster.

She ducked, the force cutting through the space where her head had been.

A sharp sound split the air.

Not human.

Not mechanical.

Something else.

Her mind raced.

It's not attacking randomly.

It's testing.

Her eyes scanned quickly.

Street.

Walls.

Narrow alley to the left.

Open road to the right.

Too exposed.

Too easy to trap.

So—

She ran.

Left.

Into the alley.

Her footsteps echoed lightly against the concrete as she moved deeper inside.

Not panicking.

Thinking.

If it follows—

Then I control the space.

Behind her—

A shift.

It followed.

Of course it did.

Lila's lips pressed together.

Good.

She stopped suddenly.

Turned.

Waited.

Silence.

Then—

The air warped.

Right in front of her.

Like something invisible was forcing its way into reality.

Lila's breath slowed.

Her eyes locked onto it.

"Show yourself."

For a split second—

Something appeared.

A shape.

Distorted.

Not fully there.

Not fully real.

And above it—

The system broke.

[Danger Level: ??? → ERROR → ???]

Her vision blurred.

The number twisted violently.

Then—

It lunged.

Fast.

Direct.

This time—

It wasn't testing.

It was aiming to kill.

Lila moved instantly.

Not backward.

Forward.

She stepped into its range—

And dropped low.

The attack missed.

The force slammed into the wall behind her with a dull crack.

Fragments fell.

Her eyes sharpened.

You're fast.

But predictable.

She grabbed a loose metal rod from the ground—

And swung.

Hard.

The rod passed through it—

But for a split second—

There was resistance.

A reaction.

The thing recoiled.

Just slightly.

That was enough.

It can be touched.

Not fully.

But enough.

Lila stepped back, breathing steady.

Her mind calculating.

I can't win this head-on.

But I don't need to.

She just needed to survive.

Then—

Pain.

A sharp force struck her side.

She stumbled, hitting the wall hard.

Her breath left her in a short gasp.

Too slow.

It adjusted.

Of course it did.

Above her—

The system flickered again.

But this time—

It wasn't the thing's number.

It was hers.

[Danger Level: 22 → 48 → 79 → 95]

Lila froze.

"No…"

That shouldn't happen.

It shouldn't—

[95 → ???]

Her chest tightened.

The same glitch.

The same distortion.

Just like before.

Then—

The thing moved again.

Closer.

Slower this time.

Like it knew.

Like it was sure.

This was the end.

Lila pushed herself up, her body tense, her mind racing faster than ever.

I died once because I hesitated.

Her grip tightened.

Not this time.

She forced herself forward again—

Even as her body screamed.

Even as her vision blurred.

Because stopping—

Meant dying.

Again.

The thing lunged.

And this time—

She couldn't fully dodge.

Its force collided with her—

And for a split second—

Everything went silent.

Dark.

Still.

Gone.

Then—

A voice cut through it.

Cold.

Sharp.

"…I told you not to get involved."

Pressure exploded in the air.

Heavy.

Crushing.

The darkness shattered.

Lila's vision snapped back.

Alex stood between her and the thing.

His hand raised slightly.

Not touching it—

But stopping it.

Completely.

The air around him felt different.

Not human.

Not normal.

Controlled.

The thing froze.

Like it had hit a wall it couldn't break.

Above Alex's head—

The system forced itself through.

Violently.

[Danger Level: 100 → ??? → ERROR]

Lila's breath caught.

Not again.

But this time—

It didn't disappear immediately.

It held.

Barely.

The thing pulled back.

Not attacking.

Not retreating.

Waiting.

Alex's voice dropped.

Low.

Dangerous.

"Leave."

A single word.

But it carried weight.

Authority.

The thing hesitated.

Then—

For the first time—

It responded.

Not with words.

But with movement.

Slow.

Reluctant.

It stepped back.

Then—

It vanished.

Gone.

Like it had never been there.

Silence returned.

But it wasn't calm.

Not anymore.

Lila leaned against the wall, breathing slowly, steadying herself.

Her side hurt.

Her body ached.

But she was alive.

That was enough.

For now.

Her eyes lifted to Alex.

"You're late."

Her voice was calm.

Even now.

Alex glanced at her briefly.

"You're reckless."

She almost smiled.

"Still alive."

A pause.

Then—

"That's what matters."

Alex studied her for a moment.

Then looked away.

Like he was thinking about something else entirely.

Lila straightened slightly.

Ignoring the pain.

Then asked the question that mattered most.

"How did you know where I was?"

Silence.

Alex didn't answer immediately.

Didn't look at her.

Then—

"I didn't."

Lila's eyes narrowed.

"What?"

Now he looked at her.

Calm.

Unreadable.

"I wasn't looking for you."

The words settled heavily between them.

Cold.

Sharp.

Lila's thoughts stopped.

Just for a second.

Then—

If he wasn't looking for me…

Her gaze hardened.

"Then who were you looking for?"

Alex didn't answer.

He just watched her.

And that silence—

Said more than anything else.

Later that night—

The screen lit up again.

2:13 AM.

[Target Survival Confirmed]

A pause.

Then—

[Phase Two Initiated]

The cursor blinked once.

Then—

[Capture Protocol: Pending]

Somewhere in the dark—

Something was adjusting.

Learning.

Preparing.

And this time—

It wouldn't miss.
