Chapter 21 - Chapter 21 : The Truth Beneath The Surface

The first thing Lila noticed was the silence.

Not the peaceful kind.

The suffocating kind.

The kind that made her instincts scream before her mind could catch up.

She stood still at the entrance of the abandoned building, her fingers tightening slightly around her phone. The location had been sent anonymously, just a set of coordinates. No message. No name.

But she knew.

This was not random.

Nothing in her life was random anymore.

"Too quiet…" she muttered under her breath.

Her eyes flickered slightly—

—and the numbers appeared.

Faint.

Floating.

Danger Levels.

Low.

Very low.

Too low.

Lila's brows furrowed.

That was wrong.

Every time danger hid itself, it never appeared as "high."

It disguised itself.

Her heartbeat slowed instead of rising.

"Someone wants me to feel safe…"

That realization hit harder than fear itself.

She stepped inside.

The door creaked behind her.

And just like that—

—the numbers changed.

A sharp flicker.

Low → Medium → ??? → Invisible.

Lila froze.

Invisible?

Her breath caught.

"That's new…"

Her ability had never… failed before.

Even the most dangerous people still had numbers.

But this—

This wasn't just hidden.

It was erased.

A soft sound echoed behind her.

Footsteps.

She turned quickly—

—but saw nothing.

Her chest tightened.

"I'm not alone."

Then a voice came.

Calm.

Too calm.

"You came anyway."

Lila's eyes narrowed.

She didn't recognize the voice.

Male.

Controlled.

Dangerous in a way that didn't need to prove itself.

"Show yourself," she said, steady but cold.

A soft chuckle.

"You always were brave… even when you shouldn't be."

Her heartbeat skipped.

That line.

That tone.

It felt… familiar.

"Who are you?" she demanded.

Silence.

Then—

"I'm disappointed."

The voice came from behind her this time.

Too close.

Lila spun—

And this time—

She saw him.

A man leaned casually against the wall, half-hidden in shadow. His face wasn't fully visible, but his presence alone made the air feel heavier.

Her eyes immediately scanned him—

Nothing.

No number.

No reading.

Nothing.

Her fingers twitched slightly.

"…You're the one," she said slowly.

The man tilted his head.

"Which one?"

"The one my ability can't read."

A pause.

Then—

a smile.

Not warm.

Not friendly.

Interested.

"How observant."

Lila's mind raced.

This wasn't normal.

Even Alex—

Her thoughts stopped.

Alex.

For a brief second, something flickered in her memory.

Something she had ignored.

Something she didn't want to connect.

But now—

Now it was forcing its way forward.

She clenched her fists.

"No," she whispered internally.

Don't go there yet.

Not yet.

"Why did you call me here?" she asked instead, her voice sharper now.

The man stepped forward slightly.

Light brushed against his face—but not enough.

Still hidden.

Still unclear.

"You've been playing a dangerous game, Lila."

Her name.

He knew her name.

Not surprising.

But the way he said it—

Like he had known her long before now.

"I don't play games," she replied coldly. "I end them."

A small pause.

Then—

"Just like you did… before you died?"

The world stopped.

Completely.

Lila's breath caught.

Her body went still.

Her mind—

Blank.

Then loud.

Too loud.

He knows.

Her heart slammed violently against her chest.

"How…" her voice came out barely steady, "do you know that?"

The man didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he took another step forward.

Closer.

"Because," he said quietly, "you're not the only one who remembers."

Lila's pupils shrank.

"No…"

That wasn't possible.

She had believed—

No.

She had trusted—

That her rebirth was hers alone.

Her advantage.

Her weapon.

But if—

If someone else remembered too—

Then everything—

Everything she planned—

Was already seen.

Already predicted.

Already countered.

Her mind spun violently.

"Who are you?" she demanded again, this time sharper, almost desperate.

The man studied her.

Then said something that shattered her composure completely—

"You trusted the wrong person again."

Lila's chest tightened.

Her thoughts immediately raced to one person.

Alex.

"No…" she whispered again, but this time it wasn't denial.

It was fear.

Because deep down—

She had already started suspecting.

The man watched her reaction carefully.

"Ah…" he murmured. "So you've started connecting the dots."

Lila's voice turned cold.

"Say it clearly."

A pause.

Then—

"You think he saved you."

Lila didn't respond.

"You think he's watching over you."

Still silence.

"You think he doesn't know more than he lets on."

Her jaw tightened.

"Get to the point."

The man leaned slightly closer.

And then—

"He was there the night you died."

Lila's world shattered.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

But silently.

Like something inside her cracked beyond repair.

Her breathing became uneven.

"No…" she said, but this time—

There was no strength in it.

Only disbelief.

Only something fragile.

"Lies," she added quickly, trying to regain control.

The man smiled faintly.

"Is it?"

Silence.

Heavy.

Crushing.

Then—

"Ask yourself this," he continued calmly. "Why does he always show up at the right time?"

Lila's fingers trembled slightly.

Memories flashed.

Every moment.

Every "coincidence."

Every time Alex appeared exactly when things went wrong.

Every time he knew just enough—

—but never too much.

Her stomach dropped.

"That's…" she started.

But stopped.

Because she didn't have an answer.

The man took a step back, giving her space—but not relief.

"Be careful, Lila," he said softly.

"Your biggest threat…"

A pause.

"…might be the one standing closest to you."

Her heart pounded violently.

Her thoughts screamed.

But before she could respond—

Before she could ask anything else—

A loud crash echoed from above.

Lila's head snapped up.

The ceiling—

Cracking.

Her instincts screamed.

"Move!"

But it was already too late.

The structure gave way.

Debris fell violently—

Dust exploded into the air—

Her body reacted instantly—

She tried to jump back—

—but something grabbed her wrist.

Firm.

Strong.

Too fast.

Her eyes widened—

The man.

"No—!"

The ground beneath her collapsed.

And everything went dark.
