Chapter 26 - Chapter 26:The First Hunter Appears

The first sign wasn't fear.

It was silence.

Not the normal kind—the kind that settled over a room when people left or when night fell. This silence felt… wrong. Like something had swallowed the sound itself.

The hallway outside Lila's classroom was always noisy at this hour.

Students talking. Lockers slamming. Footsteps echoing.

Now—

Nothing.

Lila paused mid-step.

Her fingers tightened slightly around her bag.

Something's off.

Her eyes moved slowly, scanning.

Empty corridor.

Open lockers.

A flickering light above.

Then—

A faint sound.

Click.

Her heart skipped.

Not loud. Not obvious.

But precise.

Deliberate.

Like something had just… locked onto her.

[Danger Level: ???]

The notification appeared without warning.

Lila froze.

Her pupils shrank.

"…What?"

This was new.

No number.

No color.

No classification.

Just—

???

For the first time since her rebirth…

The system didn't understand what she was looking at.

A presence.

Behind her.

Close.

Too close.

Lila didn't turn immediately.

Her breathing slowed.

Controlled.

Careful.

If it's behind me… and I didn't notice earlier…

Then it's not normal.

Not human.

"You shouldn't have come back."

The voice was calm.

Male.

Cold.

Right behind her ear.

Lila turned.

Fast.

But controlled.

And for a split second—

Her vision distorted.

Like reality itself glitched.

Then she saw him.

A boy.

About her age.

Black uniform.

Perfect posture.

Expressionless face.

But his eyes—

They weren't normal.

They didn't reflect light.

They absorbed it.

[Danger Level: ???]

Again.

Still unreadable.

"Who are you?" Lila asked quietly.

Her voice didn't shake.

But her body was already preparing to move.

To run.

Or fight.

Whichever came first.

The boy tilted his head slightly.

Like he was observing something interesting.

"Target confirmed," he said.

Not to her.

To something else.

Lila's heart dropped.

Target?

"You're not supposed to exist," he continued.

"You changed outcomes."

"You disrupted recorded events."

"You created deviation."

Each word felt heavier than the last.

Not emotional.

Not angry.

Just—

Factual.

Lila's mind moved fast.

Observer?

No.

Different.

Observers watched.

This one…

Acts.

"You're a Hunter," she said.

Testing.

For the first time—

The boy smiled.

Slightly.

"Good."

"You're aware."

And then—

The air shifted.

Lila moved instantly.

She jumped back—

Right as something sliced through the space where her neck had been.

A sharp sound cut through the silence.

Like glass tearing.

Her eyes widened.

There was no weapon.

Nothing in his hand.

Then what—

"Reaction speed… acceptable," he murmured.

Lila didn't respond.

Her brain was already calculating.

Distance.

Exit points.

Blind spots.

No one else is here.

That means—

This space is isolated.

A trap.

"You've been marked," the Hunter said.

"Escape is not permitted."

Lila smirked.

Despite the tension.

Despite the danger.

"You talk too much."

And then—

She ran.

Not away.

Forward.

The Hunter's eyes flickered.

Just slightly.

As Lila closed the distance instantly.

Her hand shot out—

Aiming straight for his throat.

But—

She passed through him.

Lila's eyes widened.

Her body stumbled forward.

No resistance.

No contact.

Like he wasn't even there.

"What—"

"Phase shift," he said calmly.

And then—

Pain exploded across her side.

Lila gasped.

Her body slammed into the wall.

Hard.

She hadn't even seen the attack.

Blood.

Warm.

Spreading.

Her vision blurred for a second.

But she forced herself up.

Forced herself to focus.

This isn't like before.

This isn't revenge.

This is survival.

"You're weaker than expected," the Hunter said.

Lila laughed.

Low.

Dangerous.

"Then why am I still alive?"

Silence.

For half a second.

Then—

The Hunter disappeared.

Gone.

Lila's instincts screamed.

She ducked—

Just in time.

Something crashed into the wall behind her.

Concrete shattered.

He reappeared.

Right there.

Fast.

Too fast.

Lila's breathing grew heavier.

But her eyes—

Sharp.

Focused.

If I can't see him…

Then I need something else.

Her gaze flickered.

[Danger Level: ???]

Still unreadable.

Then—

Something changed.

Just for a second.

A flicker.

[Danger Level: 100+]

Lila's pupils shrank.

There.

A pattern.

"You're not invisible," she whispered.

The Hunter paused.

"You just move between moments."

Silence.

Then—

A small smile.

"Interesting."

But before he could move again—

A new voice cut through the air.

Cold.

Sharp.

Familiar.

"That's enough."

Both of them froze.

The Hunter turned slowly.

For the first time—

His expression changed.

"…You."

Lila turned too.

Alex.

Standing at the end of the hallway.

Hands in his pockets.

Calm.

Too calm.

But his eyes—

Were different.

[Danger Level: ???]

Lila's breath caught.

Not again.

Another one?

"Interference detected," the Hunter said.

Alex stepped forward.

Slowly.

"You're early," he said casually.

"Protocol allows elimination."

"And I'm saying no."

The air tightened.

Lila's mind raced.

He knows him.

"…Who are you?" she asked.

Alex didn't look at her.

"Someone who doesn't want you dead."

That answer didn't comfort her.

At all.

The Hunter's gaze shifted between them.

Calculating.

Then—

He stepped back.

"This is not over."

And just like that—

He vanished.

Gone.

The silence returned.

But this time—

It felt heavier.

Lila didn't relax.

Didn't move.

"Alex…"

Her voice was low.

Careful.

"How did you know I was here?"

He finally looked at her.

And for the first time—

There was something in his eyes.

Not calm.

Not control.

Something darker.

"I always know."

Lila's heart stopped.

Just for a second.

Then she smiled.

Slightly.

Dangerously.

"I don't like that answer."

Alex stepped closer.

"You don't have to."

A pause.

Then—

He leaned slightly toward her.

"But you should be more worried about the Hunter."

Lila's eyes narrowed.

"I am."

Alex smiled faintly.

"Good."

Then he added—

Quietly.

"Because next time…"

His gaze darkened.

"I might not get there in time."

As Lila stood there, heart still racing, one thought echoed in her mind—

Not about the Hunter.

Not about the system.

But about Alex.

Because for the first time…

She realized something terrifying.

The system couldn't read him.

And neither could she.
