Chapter 29 - Chapter 29: Flaw in the system

The rain hadn't stopped since morning.

It clung to the windows like something alive, streaking down in slow, uneven lines as Lila stood silently in the abandoned classroom.

Her fingers hovered over the notebook in front of her.

Names.

Dates.

Danger levels.

Patterns.

Everything she had gathered about the Hunters… written, dissected, analyzed.

And yet—

Something didn't add up.

"Say it."

Alex's voice came from behind her.

Lila didn't turn.

"You've been staring at that same page for ten minutes."

Silence.

Then—

"They're not invincible."

That made Alex pause.

"…That's your big discovery?"

Now she turned.

Her eyes were calm.

Too calm.

"No," she said softly.

"My discovery is that they want us to think they are."

She tapped the page.

"Hunter #3. High danger level. Failed three times before successfully eliminating a target."

Flip.

"Hunter #7. Hesitated. Witness reported a delay before execution."

Flip.

"Hunter #11… injured."

Alex's eyes narrowed.

"Injured?"

"Yes." Lila's voice lowered. "Bleeds like a human. Reacts like a human. Makes mistakes… like a human."

She looked up.

"So tell me, Alex…"

Her gaze sharpened.

"If they're just humans—"

"—who the hell is controlling them?"

The room fell into a heavy silence.

Rain.

Breathing.

Tension.

Alex stepped closer.

"You're assuming they're controlled."

"I know they are."

"And how exactly do you 'know' that?"

Lila didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she flipped to the last page.

A single sentence was written there.

Not in her handwriting.

"Targets must be erased before deviation spreads."

Alex froze.

"…Where did you get that?"

Lila finally met his eyes.

"It appeared."

"…Appeared?"

"In my notebook. Yesterday."

Now even Alex looked unsettled.

"That's not possible."

Lila's lips curved slightly.

"That's what scares me."

She closed the notebook slowly.

"The Hunters follow patterns. Orders. Timing."

"They don't choose."

"They execute."

Then her voice dropped into something colder.

"But sometimes…"

She stepped closer to Alex.

"So do I."

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Alex exhaled sharply.

"You're changing."

Lila tilted her head.

"I already changed the moment I died."

Thunder cracked.

The lights flickered.

And for a split second—

The air felt… watched.

Lila's body went still.

Her eyes shifted toward the window.

"…We're not alone."

Alex followed her gaze.

Nothing.

Just rain.

Just darkness.

But Lila stepped back slowly.

"No," she whispered.

"They're early."

The door slammed open.

A figure stood there.

Drenched.

Still.

Silent.

Hunter.

But something was wrong.

It wasn't attacking.

It was staring.

Directly at Lila.

And then—

It spoke.

"…You are not following the script."

Everything froze.

Alex's hand moved instantly, pulling Lila back.

"What the hell—"

But Lila didn't move.

Her eyes locked onto the Hunter.

Her heartbeat slowed.

Her mind sharpened.

"Script…?" she repeated softly.

The Hunter took one step forward.

Mechanical.

Controlled.

But the voice—

The voice wasn't empty.

"There has been… deviation."

"Correction required."

Lila's lips parted slightly.

Not fear.

Recognition.

"…So it's true," she whispered.

Alex glanced at her.

"What are you talking about?"

But Lila didn't answer him.

She was staring at the Hunter like she had just confirmed something terrifying.

"Hunters aren't the real enemy."

The Hunter's head tilted.

"Statement acknowledged."

Lila's voice dropped to a whisper.

"You're just tools."

And then—

Her expression changed.

A slow…

Dangerous…

Smile.

⚡ TWIST (PARTIAL TRUTH REVEAL)

The Hunter suddenly twitched.

Glitched.

Then its voice shifted.

Distorted.

"…Observer… interference detected…"

Alex stiffened.

"…Observer?"

Lila's smile disappeared instantly.

Her eyes darkened.

So it was real.

The Hunter raised its hand—

But not to attack.

To point.

At Alex.

"Unknown variable."

Silence.

Then—

"Elimination… priority increased."

Lila's heart dropped.

Not me…

Him.
