Chapter 32 - CHAPTER 32: Fragments of a Broken Past

The blade didn't move.

Lila held it steady against Alex's throat, her grip firm, her breathing controlled.

But inside—

Nothing was steady.

"You were the one who killed me first."

His words echoed in her head, over and over, refusing to settle into sense.

"…That's not possible," she said quietly.

Her voice didn't shake.

But it wasn't fully certain either.

Alex didn't push the blade away. Didn't step back.

Instead, he looked at her like he was studying something fragile.

Something unpredictable.

"That's what you said last time too."

Lila's eyes sharpened instantly.

"Stop speaking in riddles."

"Then stop pretending you don't feel it."

That hit deeper than it should have.

Her fingers tightened slightly around the blade.

"…Feel what?"

Alex leaned forward just a little.

Enough that the blade pressed closer against his skin.

A thin line of blood appeared.

But he didn't react.

"You hesitate," he said softly. "Not because you doubt me…"

His gaze locked onto hers.

"But because a part of you knows I'm not lying."

Silence.

Cold.

Heavy.

Lila pulled the blade back slightly.

Not fully lowering it.

Just enough to think.

"Explain," she said.

Alex exhaled slowly, like he was deciding something.

"Not here."

"Then where?"

"Anywhere the system can't listen."

That word again.

System.

Lila's eyes narrowed.

"You talk like you've seen it."

"I don't talk," he said quietly. "I survived it."

That wasn't reassurance.

That was a warning.

Before she could press further—

The air shifted.

Again.

Subtle.

But unmistakable.

Lila's body tensed instantly.

"…They're here."

Alex didn't need to ask who.

He already knew.

"Too soon," he muttered.

Lila glanced upward.

Her vision flickered—

[Danger Level: 78]

[Danger Level: 91]

[Danger Level: ???]

Three.

No—

Four.

Hidden.

One of them unreadable.

Her jaw tightened.

"They're surrounding us."

Alex's expression hardened.

"Of course they are."

"Why does it feel like they're not after me this time?" she asked quietly.

Alex didn't answer immediately.

And that silence—

That hesitation—

Was all she needed.

"…They're after you," she finished.

He met her gaze.

No denial.

"Seems like it."

Lila exhaled slowly.

"So your past finally caught up."

Alex gave a faint, humorless smile.

"You have no idea."

A sudden sound—

Footsteps.

Not rushed.

Not chaotic.

Measured.

Deliberate.

Lila turned slightly.

A figure stepped out from the shadows.

Then another.

Then two more.

Four Hunters.

All calm.

All focused.

All staring at Alex.

Not her.

Him.

"Unit A-17," one of them spoke.

"Return for correction."

Lila felt the tension snap into clarity.

Correction.

Not elimination.

"Still trying to fix you?" she said quietly.

Alex didn't respond.

His gaze never left them.

"I told you already," he said coldly.

"I'm not going back."

The Hunter in front tilted his head.

"Resistance acknowledged."

Then—

"Force permitted."

The air tightened instantly.

Lila moved first.

Not back.

Forward.

Her hand shot out—

Grabbing a broken pipe from the ground beside her.

The nearest Hunter moved.

Fast.

Too fast for a normal person.

But Lila wasn't normal anymore.

She saw it.

The shift.

The activation.

That tiny delay.

There.

She moved before it completed.

The pipe slammed into his arm.

A crack echoed.

The Hunter staggered.

Just slightly.

But it was enough.

"They hesitate," she said sharply.

Alex's eyes flickered toward her.

"You noticed."

"I studied."

A second Hunter lunged—

Blade flashing.

Alex intercepted instantly.

Their movements collided mid-air.

Fast.

Violent.

Controlled.

But Lila noticed something.

Alex wasn't just defending.

He was holding back.

"Why aren't you finishing them?" she snapped.

"They're not the problem," he replied.

That made no sense.

But she didn't have time to question it.

The third Hunter appeared behind her.

She felt it—

Too late.

A hand grabbed her shoulder—

Cold.

Unnatural.

"Target deviation confirmed."

Her heart slammed.

She twisted—

But his grip tightened.

Stronger than expected.

Not human strength.

"Let go," she hissed.

He didn't.

Instead—

He leaned closer.

"You're not supposed to remember."

Her blood ran cold.

"…Remember what?"

The Hunter's grip tightened further—

Then—

Everything froze.

Not metaphorically.

Literally.

The rain stopped mid-air.

The sound cut.

Even Alex—

Stopped moving.

Lila's breath hitched.

"…No."

She knew this.

This wasn't the Hunters.

This was something else.

Something worse.

A presence formed.

Not visible.

But undeniable.

Her system reacted violently—

[WARNING]

[OBSERVER DESCENDING]

Her vision blurred.

Pressure built around her skull.

Then—

A voice.

Calm.

Cold.

Everywhere.

"Subject Lila."

She clenched her teeth.

"Stop calling me that."

"Deviation level increasing."

"I don't care."

"Correction required."

Her eyes burned.

"Try it."

Silence.

Then—

"You have begun to recall restricted data."

Her heart skipped.

"…So I did forget something."

"Yes."

Lila's lips curved faintly.

Cold.

Dangerous.

"Then give it back."

"No."

That single word hit harder than anything.

"Then I'll take it," she replied.

For the first time—

The voice paused.

"…You cannot."

Lila's gaze sharpened.

"You keep saying that."

"And I keep proving you wrong."

Silence stretched.

Then—

The pressure intensified.

Her knees almost buckled.

But she didn't fall.

Didn't bow.

Didn't break.

"I died once already," she said through clenched teeth.

"I'm not afraid of you."

Another pause.

Then—

"…That is the problem."

The world snapped back.

Sound returned.

Movement resumed.

The Hunter still held her—

But weaker now.

Disoriented.

Lila didn't hesitate.

She drove her elbow backward.

Hard.

A crack.

The grip loosened.

She broke free.

Alex turned instantly.

"What just happened?"

Lila didn't answer.

Her breathing was heavier now.

But her eyes—

Sharper.

Clearer.

"I remembered something," she said.

His expression changed.

"…What?"

She looked at him.

Long.

Carefully.

Then—

"You weren't lying."

Silence.

Then she added—

"But you weren't telling the full truth either."

A faint smile touched his lips.

"…I never do."

The remaining Hunters regrouped.

But something had changed.

They weren't attacking anymore.

They were watching.

Calculating.

Then—

One spoke.

"Priority updated."

Lila's body tensed.

"New directive: Observation."

Her eyes narrowed.

"…They're backing off?"

Alex didn't relax.

"That's worse."

The Hunters stepped back.

One by one.

Disappearing into the shadows.

Gone.

Just like that.

Lila exhaled slowly.

Her grip loosened slightly.

But her mind—

Racing.

"They're not trying to kill us anymore," she said.

"They're studying."

Alex looked at her.

"…They're studying you."

She didn't deny it.

Instead, she looked down at her hand.

For a brief second—

A number flickered.

Faint.

Unstable.

[Danger Level: ??? → 100 → ???]

Then—

Gone.

Her heart skipped.

"…It's changing."

Alex saw it.

His expression darkened.

"That's not good."

"No," she said quietly.

"It's not."

She looked up at him again.

"So."

A pause.

"Tell me everything."

Alex hesitated.

Just for a moment.

Then—

"No."

Her eyes sharpened.

"Excuse me?"

"You're not ready."

That angered her.

"You don't get to decide that."

"And you don't get to rush into things you don't understand," he snapped back.

Silence.

Tension.

Then—

Lila stepped closer.

Close enough that there was no space left between them.

Her voice dropped.

Cold.

Controlled.

"I already died once because I didn't understand."

A beat.

"I'm not making that mistake again."

Alex held her gaze.

Long.

Unmoving.

Then—

"…Fine."

Her heart slowed.

"Then start talking."

He exhaled slowly.

"You weren't just killed in your past life."

Her breath caught.

"…What?"

"You were erased."

The word hit differently.

Heavier.

More final.

"And now?" she asked.

His eyes darkened.

"Now you're something that shouldn't exist."

Silence.

Then—

Her lips curved slightly.

Not afraid.

Not shaken.

Just… certain.

"Good."

Alex blinked.

"…Good?"

She stepped back.

Her expression calm again.

Controlled.

"I don't plan on playing by their rules anyway."

A pause.

Then she added—

"And next time…"

Her gaze sharpened.

"I won't wait for you to show up."

Alex watched her carefully.

"…You're getting dangerous."

Lila smiled faintly.

"I've always been."

She turned.

Walking away.

But her mind—

Was louder than ever.

Fragments.

Pieces.

Memories trying to surface.

Something about Alex.

Something about her death.

Something about—

A choice.

Her steps slowed slightly.

Just for a second.

Then—

Her breath caught.

A flash.

A memory.

Not clear.

Not complete.

But enough.

Blood.

Darkness.

And—

Her own voice.

Saying something she couldn't fully hear.

Her eyes widened slightly.

"…No way."

Behind her—

Alex's voice came.

Low.

Careful.

"What is it?"

She didn't turn.

Didn't answer immediately.

Because the memory—

Was still incomplete.

Still broken.

Still dangerous.

Then finally—

She spoke.

Soft.

Almost to herself.

"…I wasn't just killed."

A pause.

Her fingers curled slowly.

"…I chose it."

Silence fell between them.

Heavy.

Unsettling.

Real.

Alex didn't respond.

Because for the first time—

He wasn't sure what that meant either.

And that—

Was far more dangerous than anything else.
