Chapter 33 - CHAPTER 33:What Hunter Fears

The training ground was empty.

That alone was wrong.

Lila slowed her steps the moment she crossed the boundary line. The air felt… heavy. Not physically, but like something invisible was watching too closely.

Her gaze flicked across the wide field.

No students.

No instructors.

No noise.

Just silence.

Too clean.

Too prepared.

"…So you came."

Lila didn't turn immediately.

She already knew that voice.

Alex.

He stood at the far end of the field, hands in his pockets, posture relaxed—but his eyes… his eyes weren't.

Danger Level: 32

It hadn't gone down.

Not even a little.

Lila finally faced him fully.

"I could say the same."

A faint smile tugged at Alex's lips, but it didn't reach his eyes.

"You've been busy."

That wasn't a question.

Lila tilted her head slightly. "Busy enough."

A pause.

The wind moved between them, carrying dust across the empty ground.

Alex took a slow step forward.

Then another.

Each step was calm. Controlled.

Measured.

Like he was testing something.

"People are starting to disappear," he said quietly.

Lila's expression didn't change.

"Are they?"

Alex stopped walking.

Now they stood facing each other, ten steps apart.

Close enough.

Dangerous enough.

"You're not even pretending anymore," he said.

Lila gave a small shrug. "Pretending is inefficient."

For a second—

Just a second—

Something flickered in Alex's eyes.

Interest?

No.

Recognition.

"You've changed," he said.

Lila didn't deny it.

Because that was the point.

SYSTEM RESPONSE DETECTED

A faint blue shimmer passed through Lila's vision.

[Observer: Passive Monitoring Active]

[Hunter Proximity Detected]

[Threat Calibration… In Progress]

Lila's gaze sharpened.

Hunter proximity?

Her eyes locked onto Alex.

So it's true.

"You're not here to talk," Alex continued.

"No," Lila replied simply.

"Good."

The word dropped like a switch being flipped.

The air changed.

No warning.

No countdown.

Alex moved first.

Lila barely saw it.

One moment he was standing still—

The next, he was already in front of her.

Fast.

Too fast.

Her body reacted before her mind did.

She stepped back—

His fist cut through the air where her face had been—

The impact hit the ground behind her.

BOOM.

The earth cracked.

Not shattered—

Cracked.

Like it couldn't fully withstand the force.

Lila's eyes narrowed.

So this is a Hunter.

Not human strength.

Not even close.

She moved.

Not to attack.

To observe.

Alex didn't chase recklessly.

He adjusted.

Tracked.

Predicted.

That alone told her everything.

Hunters weren't just strong.

They were trained to read movement patterns.

So brute force wouldn't work.

Good.

That made things easier.

Alex attacked again.

This time, faster.

Lila twisted—

Barely—

His knuckles grazed her shoulder.

Pain flared instantly.

Not deep.

But sharp.

Focused.

Lila stepped back, steadying herself.

Her eyes flickered.

Not at him—

But slightly above him.

Danger Level: 34

It was rising.

During the fight.

"…Interesting," she murmured.

Alex paused.

"You're analyzing me," he said.

"Of course."

"That's not normal."

Lila smiled faintly.

"Neither am I."

He moved again.

But this time—

Lila didn't retreat.

She stepped forward.

Alex's strike came from the left—

She didn't block.

She didn't dodge.

She shifted—

Just enough—

His arm passed inches from her body—

And in that exact moment—

She struck.

Not hard.

Not fast.

But precise.

Her fingers pressed against his wrist—

Right where the pulse should be.

Alex froze.

Just for a fraction of a second.

And that was enough.

Lila stepped back immediately.

Distance restored.

Her eyes sharpened.

There.

She felt it.

A disruption.

Small.

Almost unnoticeable.

But real.

"…You felt that," she said softly.

Alex didn't answer.

But his expression changed.

Barely.

But she saw it.

"So Hunters aren't invincible," Lila continued.

"Just reinforced."

Silence.

Then—

Alex exhaled slowly.

"…You shouldn't know that."

"I do now."

A faint tension settled between them.

But this time—

It wasn't just hostility.

It was something else.

Understanding.

"You're not normal," Alex said again.

"And you're hiding something."

Lila didn't deny it.

Because he was right.

But so was she.

"You're a Hunter," she said calmly.

"But you're not like the others."

Alex's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…What makes you think that?"

Lila tilted her head.

"Because your danger level doesn't match your behavior."

That—

That made him pause.

For the first time since the fight started—

Alex didn't move.

"…You can see it," he said quietly.

Not a question.

A realization.

Lila smiled.

And this time—

It wasn't soft.

"Yes."

Silence.

Heavy.

Unstable.

Then—

The system flickered again.

Stronger this time.

[Observer: Warning]

[Unauthorized Insight Detected]

[Data Leak Probability: Rising]

Lila's pupils shrank.

Data leak?

Before she could process it—

The voice came again.

But this time—

It wasn't calm.

[Observer: Correction Required]

The world…

Glitched.

For a split second—

Alex's body flickered.

Not moved.

Not blurred.

Flickered.

Like something was rewriting him.

Lila's breath hitched.

Just slightly.

"…You saw that," she whispered.

Alex didn't respond.

Because for that one moment—

He looked just as confused as she felt.

And that was the most dangerous thing of all.

Because if even a Hunter…

Didn't understand what just happened—

Then something else…

Was controlling the game.

And for the first time since her rebirth—

Lila realized something terrifying.

The Observer…

Might not be on her side.
