Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: The Third Presence

Lila didn't sleep well.

Not because she couldn't.

But because her mind refused to rest.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw it again.

That number.

Above her own hand.

Changing. Rising. Breaking the rules.

That wasn't supposed to happen.

Her ability only showed others.

So why… did it show her?

Lila sat up slowly, her fingers tightening against the bedsheet.

"Something changed."

And she didn't like it.

Not one bit.

She got ready for school in silence, her movements slower than usual. More careful.

More aware.

Because now, she wasn't just watching others anymore.

She might be part of the system.

And that—

That was dangerous.

Very dangerous.

The moment she stepped into school, the noise hit her like always.

Students talking. Laughing. Moving.

Normal.

But her eyes—

Were not.

Numbers appeared instantly.

[Danger Level: 12]

[Danger Level: 7]

[Danger Level: 33]

Everything looked the same.

Everything felt the same.

Until—

She stopped walking.

Her body went still.

Because for the first time since she woke up in this life…

She saw something new.

Not a number.

Not a glitch.

Not Alex.

Something else.

At the far end of the hallway, standing near the notice board—

Someone was watching her.

A boy.

Tall. Quiet. Unfamiliar.

Their eyes met.

And in that exact moment—

Something appeared above his head.

Not a number.

Not a level.

Not even a distortion like Alex.

It was worse.

Much worse.

[Observer]

Lila's breath caught.

"…What?"

The word barely left her lips.

The label flickered once.

Then—

It disappeared.

Like it was never there.

The boy turned.

And walked away.

Just like that.

No hesitation.

No reaction.

As if he hadn't just revealed something impossible.

Lila's heart started beating faster.

Not from fear.

But from realization.

"Another one…"

Her fingers curled slowly.

So Alex isn't the only anomaly.

Before she could think further—

A voice cut in.

"Lila."

She turned.

Ryan stood there.

Smiling like always.

Warm. Familiar.

Fake.

Above his head—

[Danger Level: 64]

Lila's gaze didn't soften.

Not anymore.

"Good morning," he said, stepping closer.

"Morning," she replied calmly.

But her mind wasn't on him.

Not really.

Because behind him—

She saw her stepsister.

Watching.

And above her—

[Danger Level: 78 → 82]

Rising.

Unstable.

Lila's eyes darkened slightly.

So it's starting again.

Ryan kept talking, unaware.

Or pretending to be.

"I was looking for you yesterday—"

"I was busy," Lila cut in.

Soft.

Polite.

Cold.

Ryan paused for a second.

Just a second.

But she saw it.

That flicker.

That irritation.

That control slipping.

Good.

Let it crack.

Her gaze shifted again.

Searching.

Scanning.

But the boy—

The one labeled Observer—

Was gone.

Completely.

Lila's heartbeat didn't slow.

Because something inside her was already connecting the pieces.

First Alex.

Now him.

And her own system…

Breaking.

Her fingers tightened slightly.

So it's not just about danger levels anymore.

There are roles.

Hidden ones.

Unknown ones.

And somehow—

She just got dragged into it.

The bell rang.

Students began moving again.

But Lila didn't.

Not immediately.

Because for a brief second—

She felt it again.

That same shift.

That same presence.

Close.

Too close.

Her eyes moved slowly—

To the side.

Nothing.

Just empty space.

But her instincts screamed.

Someone is here.

Watching.

Her breathing slowed.

Careful.

Controlled.

Then—

A whisper.

Right beside her ear.

"…You weren't supposed to see me."

Lila froze.

Her pupils shrank.

Slowly—

Very slowly—

She turned.

No one.

No one at all.

Her chest tightened.

Because above the empty space—

Something flickered.

Just once.

Barely visible.

[Observer: Confirmed]

Then—

Gone.

Lila didn't move.

Didn't speak.

Didn't react.

But inside—

Everything shifted.

Cold.

Sharp.

Clear.

So this is what I've stepped into.

Her lips parted slightly.

A quiet breath escaping.

"…What exactly did I awaken into?"
