Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: The First Crack

Lila didn't sleep well.

Not because she was afraid.

But because her mind refused to rest.

Alex's words replayed over and over again.

"I'm the reason they're here."

Her eyes opened slowly.

Morning light filtered through the curtains, soft and ordinary.

But nothing felt ordinary anymore.

She sat up, her expression calm, her thoughts sharp.

If Alex wasn't lying—

Then everything that happened yesterday wasn't random.

It was connected.

And if it was connected—

Then someone had been watching her long before she realized it.

Lila exhaled slowly.

"Then I'll start from the beginning."

Breakfast was quiet.

Too quiet.

Her stepmother sat at the table, sipping tea like always, her posture elegant, her expression gentle.

Perfect.

Fake.

Lila watched her without speaking.

Her father wasn't home.

Business trip.

Again.

Same as before.

Same pattern.

Same setup.

Her fingers tightened slightly around her spoon.

Just like last time.

Her stepmother looked up and smiled.

"You've been quiet lately," she said softly. "Is something bothering you?"

Lila met her gaze.

Calm.

Unreadable.

"No."

A pause.

Then—

"Should there be?"

For a split second—

Something flickered in the woman's eyes.

Gone just as quickly.

But Lila saw it.

This time—

She saw everything.

Her stepmother chuckled lightly. "You're overthinking again."

[Danger Level: 72 → 81]

Lila's eyes didn't move.

Higher than before.

Unstable.

Interesting.

"You should focus on school," her stepmother continued. "Leave adult matters alone."

Lila stood up.

"I plan to."

She picked up her bag.

Then paused.

"…After all," she added quietly, "some adults make very poor decisions."

Silence.

Sharp.

Uncomfortable.

Her stepmother didn't respond.

But the number above her head—

Spiked.

[81 → 90]

Lila smiled faintly.

Got you.

She didn't go to school immediately.

Instead—

She changed direction halfway.

A small detour.

The street was quiet.

Familiar.

Too familiar.

Her steps slowed as she approached a narrow alley.

Her eyes darkened slightly.

This place—

She had died here.

Not exactly the same way.

Not exactly the same time.

But this—

Was close enough.

Her heartbeat remained steady.

This time, she wasn't walking blindly into it.

She was testing something.

Lila stepped into the alley.

Silence.

Cold.

Still.

Then—

She spoke.

Soft.

"Come out."

Nothing.

But she didn't move.

Didn't leave.

Didn't hesitate.

Because she already knew.

They were watching.

A second passed.

Then another.

Then—

A faint sound.

A step.

From behind.

Lila didn't turn.

"…You're late," she said.

Silence.

Then—

Another step.

Closer.

And this time—

A voice.

Familiar.

Too familiar.

"You shouldn't be here alone."

Lila's eyes narrowed.

Slowly—

She turned.

And saw her.

Her stepsister.

Standing at the entrance of the alley.

Smiling.

But this time—

It wasn't sweet.

It wasn't fake.

It was—

Cold.

Above her head—

[Danger Level: 95]

Lila's heartbeat didn't change.

But her thoughts sharpened instantly.

So it wasn't just suspicion.

It was confirmation.

"You followed me," Lila said calmly.

Her stepsister laughed softly. "You're more interesting lately."

A pause.

Then—

"You weren't like this before you died."

Lila froze.

Just slightly.

Her pupils shrank.

But her expression—

Didn't break.

"…Say that again."

Her stepsister tilted her head.

Watching her carefully.

Then smiled wider.

"I said…"

A step forward.

"…you weren't like this before."

Silence filled the alley.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Lila's fingers curled slightly.

So you know.

Or at least—

You suspect.

Her voice dropped.

"Who else knows?"

Her stepsister didn't answer.

Instead—

She stepped closer.

Slow.

Deliberate.

"Does it matter?"

The number above her head flickered violently.

[95 → 97 → 93]

Unstable.

Dangerous.

Lila's gaze sharpened.

Then—

She smiled.

Faint.

Cold.

"It does," she said.

"Because now I know who to start with."

For the first time—

Her stepsister's smile faltered.

Just a little.

Just enough.

A sudden pressure filled the air.

Heavy.

Familiar.

Lila's eyes shifted slightly.

Because she felt it.

That same presence.

Watching.

Interfering.

Then—

A voice.

Behind her.

"…You really don't know when to stop."

Lila didn't need to turn.

Alex.

Of course.

Her stepsister's expression changed instantly.

Guarded.

Careful.

Interesting.

So she reacts to him.

Good to know.

Lila finally turned.

Alex stood there, hands in his pockets, gaze calm but sharp.

Watching both of them.

Not just her.

Both.

"So you came," Lila said.

Alex glanced at her briefly.

"I didn't come for you."

A pause.

Then—

His gaze shifted to her stepsister.

"I came because something crossed a line."

Silence.

Her stepsister didn't move.

Didn't speak.

But the number above her head—

Spiked.

[97 → 99]

Lila's eyes narrowed.

So he affects them too.

Alex stepped forward.

Slow.

Controlled.

The air seemed to tighten with each step.

"You shouldn't touch her yet," he said quietly.

Her stepsister smiled again.

But it wasn't confident anymore.

"Or what?"

A pause.

Then—

For the first time—

Lila saw it clearly.

Above Alex's head—

The system forced itself through.

[Danger Level: 100 → ???]

The alley felt like it froze.

Her stepsister took a step back.

Just one.

But that was enough.

Alex stopped.

Then smiled faintly.

"Or you'll find out."

Silence.

Heavy.

Crushing.

Then—

Her stepsister laughed.

Light.

Dismissive.

But forced.

"This isn't over," she said.

Then turned.

Walking away.

But not running.

Not retreating.

Just… leaving.

Like this was only the beginning.

The alley fell silent again.

Lila didn't speak immediately.

Her mind was already moving.

Fast.

Sharp.

Clear.

Then—

"So," she said quietly, "you interfere when it matters."

Alex glanced at her.

"I interfere when things get messy."

Lila turned fully to face him.

"And what am I?"

A pause.

Then—

"Trouble."

She almost smiled.

They stood there for a moment.

Then—

Lila spoke again.

"You knew she was involved."

Not a question.

Alex didn't deny it.

"Partially."

Her eyes narrowed.

"Partially?"

"She's not the one who started it," he said.

Lila's heartbeat slowed.

Cold.

Focused.

"Then who did?"

Alex looked at her.

Long.

Careful.

Then—

"You're not ready for that answer."

Lila didn't argue.

Didn't push.

Because she already understood something important.

This wasn't one enemy.

It was a network.

A system.

A setup.

And she had just exposed the first crack.

She turned.

Walking out of the alley.

But this time—

Her steps were different.

Not cautious.

Not uncertain.

Decided.

Her voice was quiet.

But sharp.

"Then I'll start small."

Alex watched her.

"And build up?"

Lila didn't look back.

"Yes."

Her eyes hardened slightly.

Because now—

She wasn't guessing anymore.

She knew.

Her stepsister.

Her stepmother.

Ryan.

All connected.

All involved.

And this time—

She wouldn't wait.

As she reached the end of the street—

Her lips curved slightly.

Not soft.

Not kind.

But dangerous.

"Let's see how long you can hide," she murmured.

Because this time—

She wasn't the victim.
