Chapter 3 - Chapter 3:First move

The hallway was loud.

Too loud.

Voices overlapped. Laughter echoed. Footsteps rushed past like nothing mattered.

Like no one was dying.

Like no one had died.

Lila walked through it all without a word.

Her pace steady.

Her expression calm.

But her eyes—

They moved.

Constantly.

Scanning.

Measuring.

[Danger Level: 7]

[Danger Level: 18]

[Danger Level: 2]

Numbers floated everywhere, flickering above heads like silent warnings.

Some rose.

Some fell.

None lied.

Her grip on her bag tightened slightly.

So this is how the world really looks.

Not through emotions.

Not through trust.

Through truth.

Cold.

Unforgiving.

Accurate.

"Lila!"

A voice called from behind her.

Bright. Familiar.

Annoying.

She stopped.

Slowly.

Then turned.

Mira jogged up to her, slightly out of breath, a smile already in place.

"I've been calling you," she said lightly. "You're ignoring me now?"

Lila blinked once.

Then smiled.

Soft.

Harmless.

"No. I just didn't hear you."

Above Mira—

[Danger Level: 92]

Higher.

Again.

Lila noted it.

Carefully.

"So," Mira continued, falling into step beside her, "are you going home now?"

"Mm."

"You should wait for Ryan," she said casually. "He said he might walk with us today."

Lila's steps didn't falter.

Not even slightly.

But inside—

Something stilled.

Of course he did.

The setup had already started.

Even now.

Even here.

She turned her head slightly.

"Did he?"

Mira nodded, smiling.

"Yeah. He's always worried about you."

Lila almost laughed.

Almost.

Instead, she looked ahead.

Uninterested.

"Then let's not keep him waiting."

They didn't have to wait long.

Ryan was already by the school gate.

Leaning casually against the fence, talking to another student.

Relaxed.

Approachable.

Perfect.

Until you knew the truth.

Lila slowed her steps just enough to observe.

Above his head—

[Danger Level: 100]

Unchanging.

Absolute.

Her eyes darkened for a fraction of a second.

So it starts here.

Not the betrayal.

Not yet.

But the path to it.

Mira waved.

"Ryan!"

He looked up.

His expression softened instantly when he saw them.

Warm.

Genuine.

Fake.

"Hey," he said, pushing himself off the fence. "You guys took a while."

"Blame her," Mira said playfully, nudging Lila. "She was spacing out again."

Ryan's gaze shifted to her.

Gentle.

Concerned.

"…Are you okay?"

Lila met his eyes.

Directly.

For the first time since she came back.

For a brief moment—

Silence.

Then—

She smiled.

Perfectly.

"I'm fine."

Above him—

[Danger Level: 100 → 100]

No change.

Of course not.

Her eyes lowered slightly.

So I can't affect you.

Not like this.

Good to know.

They started walking together.

Side by side.

Like always.

Like nothing had happened.

Like nothing would happen.

Mira talked.

Ryan listened.

Lila observed.

Every word.

Every glance.

Every subtle shift.

Then—

She saw it.

A small moment.

Easy to miss.

Ryan's hand brushed against Mira's as they walked.

Brief.

Intentional.

Above Mira—

[Danger Level: 92 → 95]

It spiked.

Her smile widened.

Just slightly.

Lila's gaze sharpened.

There it is.

Not random.

Not coincidence.

Connection.

Influence.

Reinforcement.

They feed each other.

Her lips curved faintly.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

"Lila?"

She looked up.

Ryan was watching her again.

"You've been quiet."

"Have I?"

"Yeah." He smiled. "It's not like you."

Lila tilted her head slightly.

Then—

She stepped closer.

Just enough.

Close enough to invade his space.

Subtle.

Deliberate.

Ryan paused.

Just for a second.

Above him—

[Danger Level: 100 → 97]

It dropped.

Lila's pupils shrank.

…What?

Her heartbeat slowed.

Her mind sharpened instantly.

So even you—

Can change.

Just a little.

Ryan didn't seem to notice.

Or maybe he did.

His smile faltered for half a second before returning.

"…You okay?" he asked again.

Lila stepped back.

Creating distance.

[Danger Level: 97 → 100]

Back to normal.

She exhaled softly.

So that's the trigger.

Proximity.

Emotion.

Attention.

Her gaze turned forward again.

Calm.

Cold.

Controlled.

Now she understood.

Not everything.

Not yet.

But enough.

Enough to start.

Mira looped her arm through Ryan's.

Naturally.

Comfortably.

Like it belonged there.

Lila watched them for a moment.

Then—

She smiled.

Faint.

Empty.

Go ahead.

Stay close.

Trust each other.

Her eyes flickered once—

Sharp as a blade.

Because now…

I know how to break it.
