Chapter 14 - CHAPTER 13: THE ECHO OF YOU

Some people don't leave all at once. They linger. In quiet places. In familiar routines. In the spaces they used to fill. And Sofia was starting to realize— Kenzo was everywhere. Not physically. Not anymore. But in memories. In the way she still paused when she passed the courtyard. In the way she avoided certain seats in class. In the way silence didn't feel the same as it used to.

Because once— silence felt like comfort.

Now— it felt like absence.

Sofia walked home slowly that evening. The sky painted in soft shades of orange and fading blue. She used to love sunsets. Still did. But now— they felt different. Because they reminded her of something. Endings.

She stopped for a moment, watching the horizon. "It's beautiful," she whispered. But her voice didn't carry the same warmth. Because she used to say things like that to someone.

And now— there was no one beside her.

Meanwhile— Kenzo sat alone in his room again. The lights were off. The only glow coming from the city outside his window. He hadn't turned them on. Didn't feel like it.

Because somehow— darkness felt more honest His phone rested beside him. Silent. He hadn't touched it much lately. Because every time he did— he thought of her. And every time he thought of her— he remembered what he lost.

Kenzo leaned back against the wall. Closing his eyes. Her voice echoed in his mind.

"I'm trying to move on, Kenzo."

He exhaled slowly. "Yeah…" he murmured. She should. She deserved to. But that didn't stop the ache. That didn't stop the way everything felt incomplete.

The next few days passed quietly. Sofia focused on herself. Her writing improved. Not because she was happier. But because she felt more. Every word carried weight. Emotion. Truth. Her stories weren't just stories anymore. They were pieces of her.

One afternoon, her professor handed back their essays. "Excellent work, Sofia," he said.

She smiled politely. "Thank you." But her eyes drifted. Without thinking. To him. Kenzo.

He was already looking at her. For a brief moment— their eyes met. And just like that— everything came rushing back. Not all at once. But enough. Enough to feel it Then— he looked away. And so did she.

That was how it was now. Small moments. Brief glances. Nothing more.

Later that day, Sofia sat alone again. Her notebook open. She stared at the blank page. Then slowly— she began to write.

"I think the hardest part about letting go…"

She paused. Her pen hovering. Then continued.

"…is not the losing."

"It's learning how to live with the echo of someone who used to be there."

She stopped. Her chest tightening slightly. Because that— that was exactly what it felt like. An echo. Not loud. Not constant. But always there.

Meanwhile— Kenzo walked past the courtyard. He didn't stop. Didn't look. But he felt it. The memory of her sitting there. Waiting. Smiling. Talking. Being there. He clenched his jaw slightly. Because no matter how far he walked— he couldn't leave that behind.

That night— for the first time— Kenzo picked up his phone again. He didn't hesitate as long this time. Didn't overthink. He opened their old messages. Scrolled. Read.

Then— slowly— he typed

"I hope you're doing okay."

He stared at it. His heart beating faster than he expected. Because this— this meant something. This wasn't just a thought anymore. It was action. It was risk. He took a breath. Then— sent it.

And somewhere— across the city— Sofia's phone lit up.
