Chapter 6 - THE GIRL HE COULDN'T CHOOSE

The next morning felt… off.

Maya noticed it the second she stepped into school.

It wasn't something she could see.

It was something she felt.

Whispers.

Soft, scattered, barely there.

But enough to make her uneasy.

She frowned slightly as she walked down the hallway, adjusting her bag on her shoulder.

"Okay… what is going on?" she muttered under her breath.

Students were gathered in small groups.

Some looked excited.

Some curious.

Some… amused.

And then she heard it.

"Did you see her?"

"She's here already?"

"I heard she transferred this morning—"

"No way, seriously?"

Maya slowed down.

Her curiosity pulled her closer to the conversation without meaning to.

"Who?" someone asked.

"The girl from the capital," another voice said. "The one connected to the royal family."

Maya's chest tightened slightly.

Royal family.

Her mind immediately went to Daniel.

"That doesn't mean anything," she whispered to herself.

But something inside her didn't believe it.

She shook her head and continued walking.

Maybe it was nothing.

Just rumors.

Just gossip.

But the uneasy feeling didn't leave.

By the time she reached her classroom, the energy was completely different.

People were talking louder now.

Excited.

Curious.

Lila rushed up to her the moment she walked in.

"Maya."

Maya blinked. "What?"

"Have you heard?"

"Heard what?"

Lila grabbed her arm slightly, pulling her closer.

"There's a new student."

Maya raised an eyebrow.

"That's what everyone's freaking out about?"

"No," Lila said quickly. "Not just any student."

Maya sighed softly.

"Lila—"

"She's from the capital," Lila interrupted. "And apparently, she's… important."

Maya hesitated.

Important.

Her thoughts drifted again.

Back to Daniel.

"That still doesn't explain why everyone cares so much," Maya said.

Lila leaned in slightly.

"I heard she's connected to the royal family."

There it was again.

Maya felt that same tightness in her chest.

"That doesn't mean anything," she said, a little too quickly.

Lila studied her expression.

Then softened slightly.

"You're thinking about him, aren't you?"

Maya looked away.

"I don't know what I'm thinking," she admitted quietly.

Before Lila could respond—

The classroom door opened.

And everything went silent.

Maya turned instinctively.

And that's when she saw her.

The girl stood near the doorway, calm and composed, like she belonged there more than anyone else.

She was… striking.

Not just pretty.

Graceful.

Elegant.

Like someone who had been raised to carry herself a certain way.

Her posture was perfect.

Her expression neutral—but confident.

The teacher walked in behind her.

"Class," he began, "we have a new student joining us today."

No one spoke.

No one moved.

All eyes were on her.

"This is—"

He said her name.

But Maya barely heard it.

Because something else caught her attention.

The way the girl's gaze shifted.

Slowly.

Carefully.

And then—

Stopped.

On Daniel's empty seat.

Maya's heart dropped.

The girl's expression didn't change.

But there was something there.

Recognition.

And suddenly—

Everything clicked.

No.

Maya shook her head slightly.

No, that didn't mean anything.

It couldn't.

"Please, take a seat," the teacher said.

The girl nodded politely.

And then—

She walked down the aisle.

Past rows of students.

Past curious stares.

Until—

She stopped.

Right beside Maya.

"Is this seat taken?" she asked.

Her voice was calm.

Soft.

Controlled.

Maya blinked.

"No."

The girl smiled slightly.

"Thank you."

And just like that—

She sat down next to her.

Maya felt her heartbeat quicken.

Up close, the girl was even more intimidating.

Not because she was unfriendly.

But because she seemed… untouchable.

Perfect.

"I'm sorry," the girl said quietly after a moment. "I didn't mean to make things awkward."

"You didn't," Maya replied, though she wasn't sure if that was true.

"I'm still getting used to everything," the girl added.

Maya nodded slightly.

There was a pause.

Then—

"You know him, don't you?"

Maya froze.

Her eyes widened slightly as she turned to look at her.

"I'm sorry?" she said.

The girl tilted her head just a little.

"Daniel."

Maya's breath caught.

"I saw the way you reacted when I looked at his seat," she continued gently.

Maya's mind raced.

What was she supposed to say?

"We're… friends," Maya said carefully.

The girl studied her for a moment.

Then smiled again.

But this time—

It felt different.

"I see."

Silence fell between them.

But it wasn't empty.

It was filled with something unspoken.

Something heavy.

"Then I'm glad," the girl said softly.

Maya frowned slightly.

"Glad?"

"Yes," she replied. "It means he wasn't completely alone while he was here."

The words hit unexpectedly.

Maya didn't know how to respond.

Before she could—

The classroom door opened again.

And this time—

Maya didn't need to turn to know who it was.

She felt it.

Daniel stepped inside.

His gaze scanned the room quickly.

And then—

It landed on her.

Relief flickered across his face for just a second.

But then—

He saw her.

And everything changed.

His entire expression froze.

Shock.

Recognition.

Something deeper.

"Maya…"

His voice was barely above a whisper.

But he wasn't looking at her anymore.

He was looking at the girl sitting beside her.

"…What are you doing here?" he asked.

The room was completely silent.

Every student was watching.

The girl stood slowly.

Her movements were calm.

Measured.

"I could ask you the same thing," she said.

Her tone was polite.

But there was something underneath it.

Something sharp.

Daniel took a step forward.

"This isn't where you're supposed to be."

"And yet," she replied softly, "here I am."

Maya's heart pounded.

Something was very, very wrong.

The tension in the room was suffocating.

"You should have told me," Daniel said.

"You stopped answering my calls," she replied.

That made him pause.

"I've been busy."

"So have I," she said. "But I still made time."

The words were simple.

But they carried weight.

The same weight Maya had been feeling.

Daniel ran a hand through his hair, clearly frustrated.

"This isn't the place to talk about this."

"I agree," the girl said. "But you didn't leave me many options."

Silence.

Then—

She turned to Maya.

"I'm sorry," she said gently. "It seems I've interrupted something."

Maya shook her head quickly.

"No, it's—"

But the words got stuck.

Because she didn't know what this was.

"Class," the teacher said awkwardly, trying to regain control. "Let's settle down."

But no one was paying attention anymore.

Because the real story wasn't the lesson.

It was happening right in front of them.

Daniel glanced at Maya.

And in that moment—

She saw something she hadn't seen before.

Panic.

Real panic.

And that scared her more than anything.

Because it meant one thing.

This girl wasn't just someone from his world.

She was part of it.

A part he hadn't told her about.

A part that might change everything.

Maya looked back at the girl.

And for the first time—

She felt it clearly.

Not just unease.

Not just curiosity.

But something deeper.

Fear.

Because somehow—

She already knew.

This wasn't just a new student.

This was someone important.

Someone who belonged in Daniel's world in a way she never could.

And maybe—

Someone he wouldn't be able to walk away from.
