Chapter 10 - THE DISTANCE HE COULDN'T CROSS

The next morning felt quieter than it should have been.

Not peaceful.

Not calm.

Just… empty.

Maya sat by the window in her room, her knees pulled close to her chest as soft light filtered through the curtains.

She hadn't slept much.

Again.

Her thoughts had been restless.

Unsettled.

Every memory of Daniel felt sharper now.

More fragile.

More painful.

His voice.

His smile.

The way he used to look at her—

Like she was the only thing that mattered.

She closed her eyes tightly.

"Stop," she whispered to herself.

But memories didn't listen.

Her phone sat on the desk beside her.

Silent.

No messages.

No calls.

Not from him.

A small part of her hated that she noticed.

Another part—

Hated that she cared.

She stood up slowly, grabbing her bag.

School.

Normal.

Routine.

Something to distract her.

But even as she walked out the door—

She knew.

Nothing felt normal anymore.

At school, the air carried the same tension as before.

But now—

It was heavier.

More watchful.

Maya kept her head down as she walked through the hallway.

She didn't want the whispers.

Didn't want the looks.

Didn't want to think.

"Hey."

Lila caught up to her quickly.

"You look like you haven't slept in a week."

Maya let out a small breath.

"Close enough."

Lila studied her carefully.

"Did he try to talk to you?"

Maya shook her head.

"No."

Lila frowned.

"That's… weird."

"Not really," Maya said quietly.

Lila hesitated.

"Do you want him to?"

The question caught Maya off guard.

She stopped walking.

Did she?

Her chest tightened.

"I don't know," she admitted.

And that was the truth.

Because part of her wanted answers.

Closure.

Something.

But another part—

Was afraid of what those answers might be.

Before Lila could say anything else—

They reached the classroom.

And once again—

Everything shifted.

Elena was there.

Of course she was.

Sitting in the same seat.

Perfect posture.

Calm expression.

Like nothing in the world could shake her.

Maya looked away quickly and moved to her desk.

She didn't speak.

Didn't look.

Didn't react.

But she felt it.

The weight of everything between them.

And the absence of someone else.

Daniel wasn't there.

Again.

A strange mix of relief and disappointment settled in her chest.

The day passed slowly.

Too slowly.

Every minute dragged.

Every second stretched.

And still—

No sign of him.

By the time the final bell rang, Maya felt drained.

Emotionally.

Mentally.

She packed her things quietly.

"I'll walk you home," Lila said.

Maya shook her head.

"No… I think I just need some time alone."

Lila hesitated.

"You sure?"

"Yeah."

After a moment, Lila nodded.

"Okay. Call me later?"

"I will."

Maya stepped out of the school building.

The sky was cloudy.

Gray.

Like it couldn't decide whether to rain or not.

Fitting.

She started walking.

Her thoughts were distant.

Unfocused.

Until—

"Maya."

She froze.

Her heart skipped.

No.

Slowly—

She turned.

And there he was.

Daniel stood a few steps away.

Not in his usual school uniform.

Dressed simply.

Casually.

But something about him felt different.

Less controlled.

More… real.

Like he had left something behind.

"Maya," he said again, softer this time.

She stared at him.

For a moment—

She couldn't move.

Couldn't think.

Then—

Reality came rushing back.

"What are you doing here?" she asked.

Her voice was steady.

But her heart wasn't.

"I needed to see you."

Maya let out a quiet breath.

"You could've called."

"I didn't think that would be enough."

Silence.

The air between them felt heavy.

"You didn't come to school," she said.

"I had something to take care of."

Maya almost laughed.

"Of course you did."

Daniel's expression tightened.

"I'm not lying this time."

"That's supposed to make me feel better?"

"No," he said quietly. "It's just the truth."

Silence fell again.

Maya crossed her arms slightly.

"What do you want, Daniel?"

He hesitated.

Then—

"I made a decision."

The words caught her off guard.

Her heart skipped.

"What kind of decision?" she asked.

Daniel took a step closer.

"The kind that changes everything."

Maya's chest tightened.

"I told them no."

The world went still.

"…What?" she whispered.

"I told them I'm not going through with it," he said.

"With the engagement."

Maya stared at him.

"You're serious," she said.

He nodded.

"And they just… accepted that?" she asked.

A small, humorless smile crossed his face.

"No."

Of course not.

"Then what does that mean?" she asked.

Daniel's gaze didn't waver.

"It means things are going to get complicated."

Maya let out a soft breath.

"They were already complicated."

"Not like this."

Silence.

Maya looked at him carefully.

Something had changed.

Not just in his words.

In him.

There was a weight there now.

A consequence.

"What did you give up?" she asked quietly.

Daniel didn't answer right away.

Then—

"More than they wanted me to."

That wasn't an answer.

But it was enough.

Maya's chest tightened again.

"Why?" she asked.

The question was simple.

But it held everything.

Daniel stepped closer.

"Because of you."

Maya shook her head slightly.

"Don't say that."

"It's the truth."

"That doesn't make it right," she said.

"It makes it real."

Silence.

Maya looked away.

"You don't understand," she said quietly.

"Then help me understand."

Maya took a step back.

"This isn't just about you anymore," she said.

"I know."

"No, you don't," she replied. "If you did, you wouldn't be standing here acting like this is simple."

"I never said it was simple."

"Then what is it?" she asked.

Daniel didn't hesitate.

"It's worth it."

The words hit her harder than anything else.

Her heart ached.

Because part of her—

Wanted to believe him.

"You don't get to decide that alone," she said.

"I'm not," he replied. "I'm asking you to decide with me."

Silence.

Maya's thoughts raced.

This was everything she thought she wanted.

Him choosing her.

Fighting for her.

Standing here—

Refusing to walk away.

So why did it feel so heavy?

"Your world…" she started.

Daniel waited.

"It's not something I can just step into," she said.

"I'm not asking you to."

"Then what are you asking?" she said.

He took a breath.

"I'm asking you not to walk away."

Her chest tightened.

"That's not fair."

"Neither is this."

Silence.

Maya looked at him.

Really looked at him.

He wasn't the same boy she met in the rain.

He was someone standing at the edge of everything—

And choosing to jump.

And she didn't know if she could follow.

"I need time," she said finally.

Daniel nodded.

"I know."

"But I'm not promising anything," she added.

"I'm not asking for a promise."

Another silence.

Then—

"Just don't shut me out," he said softly.

Maya hesitated.

Then nodded slightly.

"I won't."

It wasn't forgiveness.

It wasn't a decision.

But it was something.

And for now—

That was enough.

They stood there for a moment.

Not close.

Not far.

Just… in between.

Like everything else.

"I'll see you tomorrow?" Daniel asked.

Maya hesitated.

Then nodded.

"Maybe."

A small smile touched his lips.

"I'll take that."

And for the first time in days—

Something felt… lighter.

Not fixed.

Not healed.

But possible.

As Maya walked away, she didn't look back.

But this time—

She didn't feel like everything was breaking.

Because somewhere between the distance and the truth—

Something had shifted.

And maybe—

Just maybe—

This wasn't the end of their story.
