Chapter 15 - THE TRUTH THEY COULDN'T HIDE

The announcement came early.

Too early.

Maya hadn't even fully woken up when her phone started vibrating nonstop against her nightstand.

At first, she ignored it.

Thinking it was just another wave of notifications.

Another reminder that her life had somehow become public.

But it didn't stop.

Buzz.

Buzz.

Buzz.

With a tired sigh, she reached for it, squinting at the bright screen.

Her heart dropped instantly.

Breaking News: Royal Press Conference Scheduled This Morning

Her chest tightened.

No.

No, no, no—

She sat up quickly, scrolling.

Every major page was posting about it.

Every headline.

Every update.

"Prince Daniel expected to address recent scandal."

"Royal Family to respond publicly."

"Engagement rumors to be clarified."

Her fingers trembled slightly.

This was it.

The moment everything would be decided.

The moment everything could end.

"Maya!"

Her mother's voice called from downstairs.

"Are you awake? Turn on the TV!"

Maya didn't respond.

She already knew.

She stood up slowly, her heart racing, and walked out of her room.

The television in the living room was already on.

Reporters crowded the screen.

Cameras flashing.

Voices overlapping.

The palace stood in the background.

Unmoving.

Untouchable.

And yet—

Everything about it felt unstable.

Maya sank onto the couch, her eyes fixed on the screen.

Her hands clasped tightly together.

She couldn't look away.

Because somewhere in all of this—

Was him.

And whatever he said today—

Would change everything.

At the palace—

The air was colder than usual.

Tighter.

Like the walls themselves were holding their breath.

Daniel stood in front of the mirror, adjusting the cuff of his sleeve.

His reflection stared back at him.

Composed.

Calm.

But inside—

Nothing felt steady.

"You still have time to reconsider."

His mother's voice came from behind him.

Daniel didn't turn.

"I've already decided."

A pause.

"This doesn't have to become a disaster," she said softly.

Daniel exhaled slowly.

"It already is."

She stepped closer.

"You can fix it."

He met her eyes in the mirror.

"By lying?"

Her expression faltered slightly.

"By protecting yourself."

"And hurting her?"

Silence.

That was answer enough.

His mother's gaze softened.

"You don't understand what this will cost you."

Daniel turned to face her fully.

"I do."

"Then why are you still choosing it?"

He didn't hesitate.

"Because she's worth it."

The words were simple.

But they carried everything.

His mother looked at him for a long moment.

Then sighed quietly.

"You've always been stubborn."

Daniel gave a faint, humorless smile.

"Guess that's one thing I get from you."

For a second—

Something softer passed between them.

But it didn't last.

Because reality—

Was waiting outside.

And it wasn't going to be kind.

The press room was packed.

Flashes of cameras lit up the space like lightning.

Voices overlapped.

Questions already being shouted—

Even before anyone stepped onto the stage.

"Will the prince deny the rumors?"

"Is the engagement still happening?"

"Who is the girl?"

The last question echoed louder than the rest.

And somewhere, miles away—

Maya heard it too.

Her heart pounded in her chest as she sat frozen in front of the screen.

Her fingers curled into the fabric of her sleeve.

This was too much.

Too big.

Too public.

She shouldn't be here.

She shouldn't be part of this.

And yet—

She couldn't look away.

Movement on the screen made her breath catch.

The doors opened.

And the room went silent.

The royal family stepped in.

Composed.

Controlled.

Untouchable.

Daniel walked beside them.

His expression unreadable.

But Maya knew him well enough to see it.

The tension.

The conflict.

The weight of everything pressing down on him.

Her chest tightened painfully.

He looked… different.

Stronger.

But also—

More alone than ever.

They took their places.

The room held its breath.

Then—

His father stepped forward.

"Thank you all for attending," he began.

His voice was steady.

Measured.

"We are here to address recent speculation regarding our family."

Maya's heart pounded louder.

She could barely hear anything else.

Because she was waiting.

Waiting for the moment—

Everything would change.

"We understand the public's concern," his father continued.

"And we assure you that this matter is being handled with the utmost seriousness."

A pause.

Then—

"Prince Daniel will now speak."

The room shifted instantly.

Cameras focused.

Every eye turned toward him.

Maya's breath caught.

This was it.

Daniel stepped forward.

For a moment—

He didn't speak.

He just stood there.

Looking out at the crowd.

At the cameras.

At the world watching him.

And somewhere—

Beyond all of that—

He thought of her.

Maya.

The girl who had never asked for any of this.

The girl who had become the center of it anyway.

He took a breath.

And began.

"I know many of you have questions," he said.

His voice was calm.

But firm.

"I know there's been a lot of speculation."

A pause.

"And I'm here to give you the truth."

Maya's heart nearly stopped.

The truth.

Her fingers tightened.

Please—

Don't let this be goodbye.

Daniel continued.

"The person you've been seeing in those photos…"

The room leaned in.

Maya held her breath.

"…is someone important to me."

A ripple went through the crowd.

Maya's eyes widened.

He didn't deny it.

He didn't hide it.

He—

He said it.

"She's not part of this world," he continued.

"And she never asked to be."

Maya's chest tightened.

Her eyes burned slightly.

"Everything that's happened… was never her fault."

The room grew louder.

More questions.

More whispers.

But Daniel didn't stop.

"I take full responsibility for everything."

His father's expression shifted slightly behind him.

But Daniel didn't look back.

"I also want to make something clear," he said.

His voice stronger now.

More certain.

"I will not deny knowing her."

Gasps filled the room.

Maya's heart pounded uncontrollably.

"I will not pretend she doesn't matter."

Her vision blurred slightly.

"And I will not allow her to be treated like something that needs to be erased."

The words hit harder than anything else.

Because they weren't just for the public.

They were for her.

Maya covered her mouth slightly.

Her emotions rising too fast.

Too strong.

"I understand the expectations placed on me," Daniel continued.

"I understand the responsibilities I carry."

A pause.

"But I also understand that those responsibilities don't give anyone the right to decide my life for me."

The room erupted.

Questions shouted louder.

Chaos building.

His father stepped forward slightly—

But Daniel didn't stop.

"I won't stand here and lie."

Silence.

Sharp.

"I care about her."

The words were simple.

But they changed everything.

Maya's heart ached.

Because this—

Was everything she never asked for.

Everything she never expected.

And yet—

It meant everything.

"I don't know what will happen next," Daniel admitted.

"But I do know one thing."

He paused.

Just for a second.

Then—

"I'm not walking away from her."

The room exploded.

Cameras flashing rapidly.

Voices shouting over each other.

But Maya didn't hear any of it.

Because all she could focus on—

Was him.

Standing there.

Choosing her.

In front of the entire world.

Her chest tightened painfully.

Because this—

Wasn't just brave.

It was dangerous.

And she knew it.

She knew what it would cost him.

Even if he didn't say it.

The broadcast cut shortly after.

But it didn't matter.

The damage—

Or the truth—

Had already been done.

Maya sat there in silence.

Her hands trembling slightly.

Her heart racing.

"He… he didn't deny it," her mother said softly.

Maya didn't respond.

Because she couldn't.

Her emotions were too overwhelming.

Too complicated.

Too real.

Because now—

Everything had changed.

Again.

And this time—

There was no going back.
