Chapter 18 - THE MOMENT WE COULDN'T AVOID

It wasn't supposed to happen.

Neither of them planned it.

Neither of them were ready.

And yet—

Somehow—

They ended up in the same place again.

It started with something simple.

Maya had finally agreed to leave the house.

Not because she felt better.

But because staying inside was starting to feel worse.

"Just an hour," Lila had insisted.

"Fresh air won't kill you."

Maya wasn't so sure.

But she gave in anyway.

Now, she stood outside a small café, her hands wrapped around a warm cup she hadn't touched.

The world felt… normal again.

People talking.

Cars passing.

Soft music playing from inside.

It was strange.

How everything could look so ordinary—

When she felt anything but.

"You're not even drinking that," Lila pointed out.

Maya blinked.

"Oh."

She looked down at the cup.

"I forgot."

Lila sighed.

"You've been staring into space for ten minutes."

"Sorry."

"Don't apologize," Lila said, softer now.

"Just… try to be here."

Maya nodded slightly.

"I am trying."

And she meant it.

She really did.

But trying didn't mean succeeding.

Because no matter where she went—

No matter what she did—

Her thoughts always circled back to the same person.

Daniel.

Always Daniel.

"Let's walk," Lila suggested.

Maya hesitated—

Then nodded.

Maybe moving would help.

Maybe distance would make things clearer.

Or at least—

Quieter.

Across the city—

Daniel wasn't supposed to be there either.

In fact—

He wasn't supposed to be out at all.

But the palace had become suffocating.

Too many expectations.

Too many watchful eyes.

Too many reminders—

Of everything he had lost.

So he left.

Not as a prince.

Just as himself.

No guards.

No announcements.

Just quiet.

For the first time in days.

He walked without direction.

Without purpose.

Just letting his thoughts drift.

Which—

Turned out to be a mistake.

Because his thoughts always led back to her.

Maya.

The way she laughed.

The way she challenged him.

The way she walked away.

His chest tightened.

He should stop thinking about her.

He should move on.

But every attempt—

Failed.

Because she wasn't just a memory.

She was something deeper.

Something that refused to fade.

And then—

It happened.

Neither of them saw it coming.

Neither of them had time to prepare.

Because in one quiet moment—

Two separate paths—

Collided.

Maya turned the corner—

And froze.

Her breath caught instantly.

Because standing just a few feet away—

Was him.

Daniel.

For a second—

The world stopped.

No sound.

No movement.

Just the two of them.

Looking at each other.

Like nothing else existed.

"Maya…"

Her name left his lips before he could stop it.

Soft.

Almost disbelieving.

She didn't respond.

Because she couldn't.

Her heart was racing too fast.

Her thoughts too tangled.

This wasn't supposed to happen.

Not like this.

Not when she still felt everything.

"You—" she started.

Then stopped.

Because what do you say—

To someone you still love—

But chose to leave?

Daniel took a small step forward.

"Are you okay?"

The question felt too familiar.

Too dangerous.

Maya swallowed.

"I'm fine."

A lie.

But an easy one.

Daniel didn't believe it.

Not even for a second.

But he didn't call her out.

Because he knew—

She wouldn't admit it anyway.

Lila glanced between them awkwardly.

"I'm… going to give you two a minute."

Before Maya could stop her—

She was gone.

And just like that—

They were alone.

Again.

The silence stretched between them.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

But also—

Familiar.

"I didn't expect to see you," Daniel said finally.

"Me neither."

Another pause.

"You look…" he started.

Then stopped.

Because no word felt right.

Different.

Tired.

Beautiful.

Broken.

All of them were true.

None of them were enough.

"You look the same," Maya said quietly.

It wasn't true.

He looked more distant.

More guarded.

Like something inside him had shifted.

But maybe—

That was her fault.

"I've been meaning to call you," he admitted.

Her heart skipped.

"Why didn't you?"

He hesitated.

"Because I didn't know if you wanted me to."

That hurt more than she expected.

Because the answer wasn't simple.

"I don't know," she said honestly.

And that honesty—

Was more dangerous than any lie.

Daniel nodded slowly.

"I understand."

Another silence.

But this one—

Felt different.

Less distant.

More… fragile.

Like something could break—

Or begin again—

At any moment.

"Are you… okay?" she asked softly.

He let out a quiet breath.

"Not really."

Her chest tightened.

"I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"For everything."

Daniel shook his head.

"You don't have to apologize."

"But I do," she insisted.

"Because I hurt you."

"You didn't," he said.

"You made a choice."

"That doesn't mean it didn't hurt."

He looked at her for a long moment.

Then—

"For what it's worth… I understand why you did it."

That surprised her.

"You do?"

"Yes."

A pause.

"But that doesn't mean I agree with it."

A small, sad smile formed on her lips.

"That sounds like you."

He smiled slightly in return.

And for a second—

It felt like before.

Like nothing had changed.

But then—

Reality came back.

And everything felt complicated again.

"I miss you," he said suddenly.

The words slipped out before he could stop them.

Maya's breath caught.

Her heart reacting instantly.

Because she felt it too.

Every day.

Every moment.

"I miss you too," she admitted softly.

And just like that—

Everything became harder.

Because now—

The truth was out there.

Between them.

Unavoidable.

Unresolved.

Daniel took another step closer.

"Then why are we doing this?"

Her chest tightened.

"Because it's not that simple."

"Why not?"

"Because your life isn't simple," she said.

"And neither is mine anymore."

"That doesn't change how I feel."

"It should," she whispered.

"But it doesn't."

Silence.

Raw.

Honest.

"And that's the problem," she added.

Because love—

Was supposed to make things easier.

Not harder.

Not impossible.

Daniel ran a hand through his hair.

"So what are we supposed to do?"

She didn't have an answer.

Because if she did—

They wouldn't be standing here.

Lost.

Again.

"I don't know," she said.

And that—

Was the most honest answer of all.

They stood there for a while longer.

Neither of them moving.

Neither of them ready to leave.

Because walking away—

Meant going back to the emptiness.

And neither of them wanted that.

But staying—

Didn't fix anything either.

And that was the hardest part.

"We can't keep doing this," Maya said finally.

Her voice soft.

"But we also can't pretend nothing happened," Daniel replied.

Another pause.

Then—

"Maybe we don't decide right now."

She looked at him.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean… maybe we just take it one step at a time."

Her heart wavered.

"That sounds dangerous."

He smiled slightly.

"Since when do we play it safe?"

She almost laughed.

Almost.

"Since everything started falling apart," she said.

His expression softened.

"Then maybe it's time we stop letting it."

The words lingered between them.

Hopeful.

But uncertain.

Because hope—

Was risky.

And they had both already lost too much.

But still—

Neither of them walked away.

Not this time.

Because maybe—

Just maybe—

They weren't done yet.
