Chapter 8 - THE SPACE BETWEEN US

The next day, everything felt heavier.

Not louder.

Not more dramatic.

Just… heavier.

Maya walked through the school gates with a quiet sense of dread settling in her chest.

She hadn't slept much.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the same moment again—

Daniel standing in front of her.

His voice steady.

His words breaking everything.

She's the one they want me to marry.

Maya tightened her grip on her bag.

"Get it together," she muttered softly to herself.

But it wasn't that easy.

Inside the school, the atmosphere buzzed with the same curiosity as yesterday.

If anything, it had grown.

People whispered more openly now.

Laughed more freely.

Watched more carefully.

Because now—

There was a story.

And Maya was in the middle of it.

She could feel it in the way people looked at her.

The quick glances.

The quiet conversations that stopped when she walked by.

She hated it.

"Hey."

Maya turned.

Lila walked up beside her, her expression softer than usual.

"You okay?" she asked.

Maya forced a small shrug.

"Yeah."

Lila raised an eyebrow.

"That was the least convincing 'yeah' I've ever heard."

Maya let out a small breath.

"I just didn't sleep well."

"That's not all, and you know it."

Maya didn't respond.

Because she couldn't explain it.

Not without saying everything.

And she wasn't ready for that.

Not yet.

"Did you talk to him?" Lila asked carefully.

Maya hesitated.

Then nodded.

"And?" Lila pressed.

Maya looked ahead, her voice quieter now.

"It's… complicated."

Lila frowned.

"That's never a good sign."

Maya let out a humorless laugh.

"No. It's not."

Before Lila could ask more—

They reached the classroom.

And just like yesterday—

The moment Maya stepped inside, the room shifted.

Not because of her.

Because of her.

The girl was already there.

Sitting in the same seat.

Calm. Perfect. Untouchable.

Maya's chest tightened.

She looked away quickly, moving to her desk without saying anything.

But she could feel it.

That presence.

That quiet, unshakable confidence.

It made everything feel unbalanced.

"Maya."

Her name was soft.

Gentle.

Maya froze.

Slowly, she turned.

The girl was looking at her.

There was no hostility in her expression.

No anger.

No arrogance.

Just… calm.

"Yes?" Maya said.

"I was hoping we could talk," the girl said.

Maya blinked.

"About what?" she asked.

The girl stood up slowly.

"About Daniel."

The name alone made Maya's chest tighten.

"I don't think that's a good idea," Maya said quietly.

"I understand why you'd feel that way," the girl replied.

Her tone didn't change.

Still calm.

Still controlled.

"But I think it's necessary."

Maya hesitated.

Every instinct told her to walk away.

But something else—

Something stronger—

Made her stay.

"…Fine," she said.

The girl nodded.

"After school?" she suggested.

Maya hesitated again.

Then nodded slightly.

"Okay."

The rest of the day dragged.

Maya couldn't focus.

Couldn't think.

Her mind kept circling back to one thing.

What could she possibly want to say?

And more importantly—

What was Maya supposed to say back?

Daniel didn't show up to class.

That didn't surprise her.

What did surprise her—

Was how much it hurt.

By the time the final bell rang, Maya felt exhausted.

She packed her things slowly, her movements almost mechanical.

"Do you want me to come with you?" Lila asked quietly.

Maya shook her head.

"No… I think I need to do this alone."

Lila studied her for a moment.

Then nodded.

"Okay. But call me if anything happens."

"I will."

Maya stepped out of the classroom.

And there she was.

Waiting.

Like she knew Maya wouldn't run.

"Thank you for agreeing to talk," the girl said.

Maya crossed her arms slightly.

"Let's just get this over with."

The girl nodded.

They walked in silence.

Not toward the main road.

Not toward the crowded streets.

But somewhere quieter.

A small park not far from the school.

It was empty.

Peaceful.

Too peaceful for the kind of conversation they were about to have.

They stopped near a bench.

The girl turned to face her.

"My name is Elena," she said.

Maya hesitated.

"…Maya," she replied.

"I know," Elena said softly.

Of course she did.

There was a pause.

Then—

"You care about him," Elena said.

It wasn't a question.

Maya looked away.

"That's not your concern," she said.

Elena nodded slightly.

"You're right. It's not."

Silence.

"But it does make things more difficult," Elena added.

Maya frowned.

"For who?" she asked.

Elena met her gaze.

"For all of us."

Maya let out a small breath.

"I don't understand what you want from me," she said.

Elena hesitated.

Then spoke.

"I wanted to see you."

Maya blinked.

"Why?"

"Because I needed to understand."

"Understand what?"

Elena's gaze softened slightly.

"Why he chose you."

The words hit harder than Maya expected.

"I didn't… ask him to choose me," Maya said.

"I know," Elena replied.

"But he did."

Silence.

Maya's heart pounded.

"What do you mean?" she asked.

Elena looked down for a moment.

Then back up.

"He's been avoiding me," she said.

Maya frowned.

"For how long?"

"A while."

Before he came back.

Maya felt her chest tighten again.

"He stopped answering my calls," Elena continued. "Stopped responding to messages."

The same thing he had been doing to Maya.

Except—

Elena had noticed first.

"I came here because of that," Elena said.

Maya's eyes widened slightly.

"You transferred… because of him?"

Elena nodded.

"I needed to know what was more important than everything he was leaving behind."

Silence.

"And you think that's me?" Maya asked.

Elena didn't answer immediately.

"I think," she said carefully, "that you're part of it."

Part of it.

Not all of it.

That stung.

"You don't even know me," Maya said.

"No," Elena agreed. "But I know him."

Maya clenched her hands slightly.

"Then you should already understand," she said.

Elena tilted her head.

"Understand what?"

"That this isn't something you can just walk into and control," Maya replied.

"I'm not trying to control it."

"Then what are you trying to do?"

Elena paused.

Then said it.

"I'm trying to protect what's already been decided."

The words felt cold.

Final.

Maya's chest tightened.

"So it's true," she said quietly.

Elena didn't look away.

"Yes."

The air felt heavier.

"Our families have an agreement," Elena continued.

Maya swallowed.

"And you're just… okay with that?" she asked.

Elena hesitated.

"It's not about being okay with it," she said.

"Then what is it about?"

"Duty."

The word echoed.

Maya shook her head.

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only answer that matters."

Silence fell.

Maya laughed softly.

"You really believe that?"

Elena's expression didn't change.

"I was raised to."

That stopped Maya for a second.

Because suddenly—

It wasn't just about rivalry.

It was about two completely different worlds.

"I wasn't," Maya said quietly.

Elena nodded.

"I can see that."

Another pause.

Then—

"I'm not here to fight you," Elena said.

"Then why does it feel like you are?" Maya asked.

"Because the situation itself is a conflict."

Maya let out a slow breath.

"And what happens now?" she asked.

Elena looked at her carefully.

"That depends on him."

Of course it did.

It always came back to him.

"But I'll tell you this," Elena added softly.

Maya waited.

"If he chooses you… it won't be simple."

Maya's chest tightened.

"It will cost him everything," Elena said.

The words hung in the air.

"And if he doesn't?" Maya asked.

Elena's gaze softened just slightly.

"Then it will cost you."

Silence.

The truth of it settled between them.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Maya looked away.

She didn't want to hear this.

Didn't want to feel this.

But she couldn't ignore it either.

Because for the first time—

Everything was clear.

This wasn't just about feelings anymore.

It was about choices.

Sacrifices.

Consequences.

"I don't know if I can do this," Maya said quietly.

Elena didn't respond right away.

Then—

"You don't have to decide right now," she said.

Maya let out a small, tired breath.

"It feels like I do."

Elena nodded slightly.

"That's because you care."

Silence.

Then Maya looked at her again.

"Do you?" she asked.

Elena blinked.

"Care about him," Maya clarified.

Elena hesitated.

And for the first time—

Her composure cracked.

Just a little.

"…Yes," she said quietly.

That changed everything.

Because now—

This wasn't just about duty.

It was about love too.

And suddenly—

Maya didn't know which made it harder.

They stood there in silence.

Two girls.

Two worlds.

Connected by one person.

And neither of them knew how it would end.
