Chapter 7 - THE PROMISES HE NEVER TOLD HER

The rest of the day passed in a blur.

Maya barely remembered what the teacher said.

Barely registered the passing of time.

Barely noticed anything—

Except them.

Daniel.

And her.

The girl sat beside Maya like she had always belonged there.

Calm. Composed. Untouchable.

And Daniel—

He wasn't the same.

Maya had seen him distant before.

Quiet. Guarded.

But this?

This was different.

He was tense.

Every movement sharper.

Every glance heavier.

And every time his eyes flickered toward the girl—

Something unspoken passed between them.

Something that made Maya's chest tighten.

By the time the final bell rang, Maya couldn't take it anymore.

She stood up quickly, grabbing her bag.

"I'm going home," she muttered to Lila.

"Maya—"

But she was already walking out.

The hallway felt louder than usual.

Too bright.

Too crowded.

She needed air.

She needed space.

She needed to think.

"Maya."

Her steps slowed.

Just for a second.

She knew that voice.

Of course she did.

But she didn't turn around.

Not yet.

"Maya, wait."

This time—

She stopped.

Slowly, she turned.

Daniel stood a few steps behind her, his expression unreadable.

"Can we talk?" he asked.

Maya let out a quiet breath.

"About what?" she said.

His jaw tightened slightly.

"You know what."

Maya crossed her arms.

"No. Actually, I don't."

That wasn't entirely true.

She had a feeling.

But she needed to hear it.

From him.

Daniel glanced around briefly.

"Not here."

Maya hesitated.

Every instinct told her to walk away.

To avoid this.

To pretend it didn't matter.

But her heart—

Her heart wouldn't let her.

"Fine," she said.

They walked in silence.

Not to the library.

Not to the street.

But to the tree behind the school.

The place that used to feel like theirs.

Now—

It felt different.

Like everything else.

Maya stopped first.

"Talk," she said.

Daniel ran a hand through his hair, clearly struggling to find the right words.

"That girl—"

"What about her?" Maya cut in.

He hesitated.

"That's what I'm trying to explain."

"Then explain," she said.

Her voice was calm.

But there was something beneath it.

Something sharp.

Daniel took a deep breath.

"Her name is—"

"I don't care what her name is," Maya interrupted.

Silence.

"I want to know why you looked at her like that," she continued.

Daniel's expression tightened.

"And why she talks to you like she knows you," Maya added.

Another pause.

"And why," she said, her voice quieter now, "you didn't tell me about her."

That was the question that mattered.

Daniel looked away.

And that—

That hurt more than anything.

"She's… part of my life," he said finally.

Maya let out a soft, humorless laugh.

"That's not an answer."

"It's the truth."

"No," Maya said. "It's a half-truth."

Silence.

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

"I didn't tell you because I didn't want to complicate things."

Maya shook her head.

"You don't get to decide what complicates things for me."

"I know."

"Then why do you keep doing it?" she asked.

He didn't respond.

Maya's chest tightened.

"Is she important?" she asked quietly.

The question lingered.

Heavy.

Daniel didn't answer right away.

And that hesitation—

That tiny, unbearable pause—

Told her everything.

"Yes," he said finally.

The word felt like a crack forming.

Maya nodded slowly.

"Okay."

But her voice wasn't steady.

"Important how?" she asked.

Daniel looked at her.

Really looked at her.

And for a moment—

She saw it.

Fear.

"I need you to stay calm," he said.

Maya let out a small breath.

"That's not a good start."

He almost smiled.

But it didn't last.

"She's… someone my family has known for a long time."

"That doesn't explain anything."

"She's connected to us."

"How?" Maya pressed.

Daniel hesitated.

Then—

He said it.

"She's the one they want me to marry."

Everything stopped.

The world didn't move.

Didn't breathe.

Didn't exist.

Maya stared at him.

"You're joking," she said.

Her voice sounded distant.

Like it didn't belong to her.

Daniel didn't respond.

And that was her answer.

"You're serious," she whispered.

He nodded.

The crack shattered.

Maya stepped back slightly.

"An arranged marriage?" she asked.

"It's more complicated than that—"

"No," she said quickly. "It's not."

Silence.

"You're engaged," she said.

"I'm not," Daniel said immediately.

"But you will be."

Another silence.

"That's what they want," he admitted.

Maya laughed again.

But this time—

It hurt.

"Wow."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Maya—"

"Don't," she said, holding up a hand.

He stopped.

"Don't say my name like that," she added quietly.

Her chest felt tight.

Her thoughts tangled.

Her heart—

It hurt in a way she didn't expect.

"How long have you known?" she asked.

Daniel hesitated.

"…A while."

Maya closed her eyes.

"Before you came back?" she asked.

"…Yes."

That was it.

That was the moment everything broke.

"You knew," she said.

Her voice wasn't loud.

But it shook.

"You knew all this time… and you still came back."

"I came back for you."

"Don't," she said again.

"Don't say that like it makes this okay."

"I'm not saying it makes it okay," he replied. "I'm saying it's the truth."

Maya shook her head.

"No… the truth would've been telling me before I got—"

She stopped.

Before I got attached.

Before I started hoping again.

Before I believed you.

"You should've told me," she finished quietly.

"I know."

"But you didn't."

"I was going to."

"When?" she asked. "After you got engaged?"

"That's not fair."

"Fair?" she repeated.

Her voice rose slightly.

"You're talking about fair?"

Daniel's expression tightened.

"I didn't choose this," he said.

"But you didn't stop it either."

Silence.

Maya took a step back.

"I feel stupid," she said softly.

Daniel's eyes widened.

"Maya—"

"No," she said. "Let me finish."

Her voice trembled slightly.

"I thought… I thought things were different this time."

"They are different."

"No," she said. "They're worse."

The words hit hard.

Daniel flinched slightly.

"At least before," she continued, "I didn't know what I was getting into."

"And now you do."

"Yeah," she said. "Now I know I was never really part of your world."

"That's not true."

"Then what is?" she asked.

Daniel stepped forward again.

"You are part of my world."

"Not in the way that matters," she replied.

Silence fell between them.

The air felt heavy.

"You think I want this?" Daniel asked.

"I don't know what you want," Maya said.

"That's the problem."

Another silence.

"I want you," he said.

The words hung in the air.

For a moment—

Everything stopped.

Maya's heart skipped.

But then—

Reality came crashing back.

"That doesn't change anything," she whispered.

"It does to me."

"But not to your family."

Daniel didn't respond.

"And they're the ones deciding your future," she added.

Another silence.

Maya shook her head slowly.

"I can't do this," she said.

Daniel's chest tightened.

"Do what?"

"This," she replied. "Whatever this is."

"Maya—"

"I can't stand here and pretend like everything's okay when it's not."

"I'm not asking you to pretend."

"Then what are you asking?" she said.

He didn't have an answer.

And that—

That was the hardest part.

Maya let out a shaky breath.

"I need space," she said.

Daniel's expression shifted.

"No," he said.

The word came out too quickly.

Too sharply.

Maya blinked.

"No?" she repeated.

"I mean… not like this," he said quickly.

"Then how?" she asked.

"I can fix this."

Maya shook her head.

"You can't fix something you won't fight."

Silence.

That hit him.

Hard.

"I am fighting," he said.

"Then prove it."

The words hung between them.

And for a moment—

It felt like everything depended on what he said next.

But he didn't say anything.

Because he didn't know how.

Maya nodded slowly.

"That's what I thought."

She turned.

"Maya—"

But this time—

She didn't stop.

She walked away.

And Daniel didn't follow.

Because for the first time—

He realized something.

Loving her wasn't the problem.

Choosing her was.

And that choice—

Was about to cost him everything.
