Chapter 5 - THE WEIGHT OF DISTANCE

The days after Daniel's return didn't fall back into place the way Maya had hoped.

At first, she thought they would.

There had been that moment in the library—the quiet surprise, the familiar warmth, the feeling that maybe, just maybe, things could go back to how they used to be.

But now she understood something.

They couldn't go back.

Too much had changed.

It showed in the small things.

It always started with the small things.

Daniel still walked beside her after school.

Still sat across from her in the library sometimes.

Still looked at her with that same quiet intensity that made her forget everything else.

But there were cracks now.

Subtle.

Barely visible.

Yet impossible to ignore.

"Hey, you're zoning out again."

Maya blinked, snapping back to reality.

Daniel was looking at her, one eyebrow slightly raised.

She forced a small smile. "Am I?"

"Yeah. That's the third time in the last five minutes."

"Maybe you're just boring."

He let out a quiet laugh.

"Wow. That's harsh."

The moment felt normal.

Light.

Almost like before.

But then his phone buzzed.

The shift was immediate.

Daniel's smile faded slightly as he glanced at the screen.

It was quick.

So quick that most people wouldn't notice.

But Maya did.

Because she had started paying attention.

"Everything okay?" she asked.

"Yeah," he said, locking his phone and slipping it back into his pocket.

Too fast.

Too automatic.

Maya tilted her head slightly.

"You always say that."

"And it's usually true."

"Usually," she repeated softly.

He didn't respond.

Instead, he looked away, his gaze drifting toward the window.

That was another thing she had noticed.

He did that a lot now.

Looking away.

Like something else was always pulling his attention.

They fell into silence after that.

Not the comfortable kind they used to have.

This one felt heavier.

After school, they walked together like they always did.

But even that felt different.

The distance between them wasn't physical.

They were close enough that their shoulders brushed occasionally.

But it was there.

Invisible.

Persistent.

"You've been busy," Maya said finally.

Daniel glanced at her. "Yeah. A little."

"A little?" she repeated.

He gave a small shrug. "Okay… more than a little."

"With your family?" she asked.

He nodded.

"What kind of things?"

The question lingered.

Daniel hesitated.

And that hesitation said more than any answer could.

"Just… responsibilities," he said.

Maya stopped walking.

Daniel took a few more steps before realizing she wasn't beside him anymore.

He turned back.

"What?" he asked.

Maya crossed her arms slightly, her expression calm—but her eyes searching.

"You keep saying things like that."

"Like what?"

"'Responsibilities.' 'Family stuff.' 'It's nothing.'"

Daniel frowned slightly.

"It's not nothing."

"Then what is it?"

He opened his mouth to answer.

Then closed it again.

And that was enough.

Maya let out a small breath.

"That's what I thought."

"I'm not trying to avoid the question," he said.

"It feels like you are."

"I just don't want to drag you into something complicated."

Maya shook her head slightly.

"You don't get to decide that for me."

Her voice wasn't loud.

But it was firm.

Daniel stared at her for a moment.

Then looked away.

"I'm trying to protect you," he said quietly.

"From what?" she asked.

He didn't answer.

The silence stretched.

Long.

Uncomfortable.

Maya's chest tightened.

"Daniel."

He still didn't look at her.

"Look at me."

Slowly, he did.

And for a moment—

Everything felt too real.

"I don't need you to protect me," she said.

"You say that now."

"No," she replied. "I mean it."

He hesitated.

"I just don't want you getting hurt."

Maya let out a soft, almost frustrated laugh.

"That's funny."

Daniel frowned. "What?"

"You're already doing that."

The words landed harder than she expected.

Daniel's expression shifted.

"I didn't mean to—"

"I know," she said quickly. "But that doesn't change anything."

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Maya looked away, her voice quieter now.

"I thought things would be different this time."

"They are different," he said.

She shook her head slightly.

"No… not in the way that matters."

Daniel ran a hand through his hair, clearly frustrated.

"What do you want me to say?"

"The truth," she replied immediately.

Another silence.

"I can't tell you everything," he said finally.

The words felt like a wall.

Maya nodded slowly.

"Okay."

But the way she said it—

It wasn't acceptance.

It was distance.

They walked the rest of the way in silence.

When they reached the corner where they usually split off, Maya didn't stop.

"Hey," Daniel called.

She paused, but didn't turn around.

"I'll see you tomorrow," he said.

She hesitated.

Then nodded slightly.

"Yeah."

But something about it felt uncertain.

That night, Maya sat on her bed, her phone in her hands.

She stared at Daniel's name on the screen.

She wanted to call him.

To fix things.

To go back to how they were just a few days ago.

But another part of her—

The part that had been hurt before—

Held her back.

Instead, she set the phone down.

Across the city, Daniel stood in a room that felt nothing like the world Maya knew.

Everything about it was polished.

Controlled.

Perfect.

And suffocating.

"You've been distracted."

Daniel turned.

His advisor stood near the doorway, his expression unreadable.

"I'm fine," Daniel said.

"That's not what it looks like."

Daniel didn't respond.

"There are expectations you need to remember," the advisor continued.

"I haven't forgotten."

"Then act like it."

A flicker of irritation crossed Daniel's face.

"I am acting like it."

The advisor stepped closer.

"Are you?"

Silence.

"You requested time away," the advisor said. "And it was granted."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"I know."

"That time is not meant to be wasted."

"I'm not wasting it."

"Then don't let distractions interfere."

Daniel looked at him sharply.

"Don't call her that."

The words slipped out before he could stop them.

The advisor's expression didn't change.

But something in the air shifted.

"So it is about her."

Daniel didn't respond.

"That makes things… more complicated."

"I can handle it."

"Can you?"

The question lingered.

Heavy.

"There are plans in place," the advisor continued.

"Plans can change."

The advisor shook his head slightly.

"Not these."

Daniel's chest tightened.

"What are you talking about?" he asked.

The advisor paused.

Then said it.

"Your engagement."

Everything stopped.

Daniel's expression darkened instantly.

"That hasn't been confirmed."

"It will be."

"No," Daniel said firmly. "Not if I have anything to say about it."

The advisor watched him carefully.

"You don't have as much control as you think."

"And you don't get to decide my life for me."

Silence.

For a moment, it felt like something might break.

Then the advisor stepped back.

"Be careful," he said. "Choices have consequences."

The door closed behind him.

Daniel stood there, unmoving.

His thoughts raced.

Maya.

His family.

The expectations.

The future being decided for him.

And suddenly—

Everything felt like it was closing in.

Back in her room, Maya lay awake, staring at the ceiling.

Something felt wrong.

Not just the argument.

Not just the distance.

Something bigger.

She couldn't explain it.

But she could feel it.

Like something was about to change.

Something that would force both of them to make a choice.

And this time—

It wouldn't just be about distance.

It would be about whether they were willing to fight for each other.

Or let everything fall apart.
