Chapter 15 - SHARDS OF WAR — THE CHOICE THAT BREAKS

The city didn't stay calm for long after the Fractured Beast fell. The moment its body shattered into fragments of fading light, the tension in the surrounding area shifted from cautious observation to something far more dangerous. Eyes that had been watching from a distance now moved closer. Conversations turned into whispers. And whispers turned into intent.

Tony could feel it.

This wasn't like the First Layer, where power alone created distance.

Here, power created attention.

And attention invited conflict.

Kaelen stepped forward slightly, his gaze sweeping across the nearby streets as more players began to gather. "That wasn't just a random encounter," he said quietly. "When a Fractured Beast appears this close to the city center, it means something triggered it."

His eyes flicked toward Tony for just a second.

Then back to the crowd.

"…And now everyone's going to start asking questions."

Chris exhaled slowly. "Yeah, I can already feel it."

John shifted uncomfortably. "Can we not be the center of attention for once?"

Emily didn't speak.

She was watching the players gathering around them.

Not all of them looked hostile.

But not all of them looked friendly either.

---

The crowd parted slightly.

A new group approached.

This one was different.

More organized.

More confident.

---

Five players.

Dressed in coordinated gear.

Each one carrying themselves with the kind of presence that didn't come from just surviving—but from dominating.

---

Kaelen's expression hardened slightly.

"…Crimson Pact."

---

The name alone changed the atmosphere.

Several players in the area stepped back instinctively.

Others looked away completely.

---

The leader of the group stepped forward, his movements calm, controlled, and deliberate. His armor carried a deep red tint, and faint energy lines pulsed across its surface like veins. His eyes locked onto Tony immediately—not with curiosity, but with recognition.

"…So it's true," he said.

His voice was smooth.

Confident.

Dangerous.

---

"…The anomaly reached the Second Layer."

---

Chris's grip tightened on his weapon. "You know about him?"

The man smiled faintly. "Everyone important does."

He took another step forward.

"…Name's Veyron."

---

Tony didn't react much.

"…Tony."

---

Veyron's smile widened slightly.

"…Good."

"…That saves time."

---

The tension snapped instantly.

---

"This layer doesn't have space for something like you," Veyron continued. "The balance is already fragile."

He tilted his head slightly.

"…So we fix it early."

---

Emily's eyes narrowed. "…You're going to attack him here?"

Veyron didn't even look at her.

"…I'm going to remove a problem."

---

FACTION WAR IGNITES

---

Before anyone else could speak—

The Crimson Pact moved.

---

Fast.

---

Coordinated.

---

Deadly.

---

Two of them rushed Chris and Kaelen's group instantly, locking them into combat. Another moved toward John, forcing him into a defensive position. The remaining two stayed behind Veyron, watching carefully.

---

Tony stepped forward.

"…So this is how it works here."

---

Veyron nodded slightly.

"…This is how it always works."

---

Then—

He moved.

---

ELITE VS ANOMALY

---

Tony reacted instantly.

Fracture Step activated.

---

Both of them vanished—

---

And reappeared mid-clash.

---

The impact sent a shockwave through the street, cracking the ground beneath them. This wasn't like fighting the Executioner. This wasn't overwhelming force.

This was skill.

Refined.

Controlled.

---

Tony's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…You're strong."

---

Veyron smirked faintly.

"…Of course I am."

---

He attacked again.

---

Fast.

---

Precise.

---

Each movement calculated.

---

Tony blocked.

Countered.

Moved.

---

The fight escalated instantly.

---

Behind them, chaos spread.

Chris fought two opponents at once, barely holding his ground. Kaelen's team was engaged as well, their coordination clashing against the Crimson Pact's discipline. John struggled to maintain his barrier under constant pressure, his energy draining rapidly.

---

Emily stood still for a moment.

Watching.

Calculating.

---

"…This is the moment," she thought.

"…If I don't decide now… I won't get another chance."

---

Her gaze shifted between Tony—

And Veyron.

---

"…If Tony wins… everything gets worse."

"…If he loses… it ends here."

---

Her hand tightened.

---

"…What do I do?"

---

THE FIGHT INTENSIFIES

---

Tony stepped back slightly as Veyron's attack grazed past him, cutting through the air with dangerous precision. The difference between this opponent and the Executioner was clear—Veyron wasn't relying on system authority.

He was relying on experience.

---

"…You're holding back," Veyron said calmly.

---

Tony tilted his head slightly.

"…Maybe."

---

The distortion around him flickered.

---

"…Or maybe I just don't need to try yet."

---

Veyron's expression sharpened.

"…Then try."

---

He vanished again—

---

Appearing behind Tony—

---

A direct strike aimed at his core.

---

Tony reacted.

But this time—

He didn't dodge.

---

He turned.

---

And grabbed the attack.

---

The distortion flared.

---

Space warped around his hand—

---

And Veyron's movement—

Stopped.

---

For a split second—

---

Everything froze.

---

Veyron's eyes widened slightly.

"…What—"

---

Tony moved.

---

A single strike.

---

Clean.

---

Direct.

---

Veyron was thrown backward, crashing through part of a broken structure before stopping himself mid-slide.

---

Silence fell briefly.

---

Even the surrounding fight slowed.

---

"…He just overpowered Veyron…" someone whispered.

---

EMILY'S BREAKING POINT

---

Emily's heart pounded.

---

"…He's going to win."

---

The realization hit hard.

---

"…And if he wins…"

"…Everyone will target him."

"…And anyone with him."

---

Her eyes lowered slightly.

---

"…Including me."

---

She took a step back.

---

No one noticed.

---

Another step.

---

Still no one noticed.

---

Her hand trembled slightly.

---

"…I don't want to die here."

---

Then—

She stopped.

---

"…But…"

---

Her gaze lifted again.

---

Toward Tony.

---

"…Why does it feel wrong to leave?"

---

The fight wasn't over.

Veyron stood again.

Stronger.

More serious.

---

And above the fractured sky—

Multiple cracks opened at once.

---

Something bigger was coming.

---
