I woke slowly, unsure at first whether I had truly slept or simply drifted between strange dreams and unfamiliar reality.
The ocean moved gently around me, warmer than I remembered. Soft light filtered through the curved ceiling of my chamber, shimmering like liquid sunlight. Tiny glowing fish swam lazily above, their bodies leaving trails of gold that danced across the walls.
For a moment, I forgot where I was. That was when the memories rushed back all at once.
How I died and found myself here,The palace. The mighty Emperor; His silver eyes studied me as though I were a mystery even he could not solve.
This is my second chance to live and I have to live it to the fullest, maybe the heavens have other plans for me.
My life isn't worthless like I thought_I don't even want to recall how my life used to be,how I lived in Seoul.
My stomach tightened.I sat up carefully, expecting panic to return, but instead I felt… calm. The water no longer frightened me. Breathing beneath the ocean felt strangely natural now, as if my body had already accepted this impossible world faster than my mind could.
A gentle knock sounded against the pearl doors. Before I could answer, they opened slightly and Moana entered, followed by several attendants carrying folded garments that shimmered like woven moonlight.
"Good morning," she said softly.
"Good morning," I replied, surprised by how normal my voice sounded.
The attendants approached cautiously, watching me with open curiosity.
One of them,a young girl with bright coral-colored hair…stared at me as if she had never seen anything more fascinating.
Which… I guessed was true.
"We were instructed to assist you," Moana explained. "His Majesty wishes you to be comfortable."
I blinked. The Emperor… thinking about my comfort felt oddly unreal.
They helped me into new clothing made from soft sea silk that moved effortlessly with the water. The fabric felt alive, adjusting whenever I shifted. It was beautiful, far more elegant than anything I had ever worn on land.
The attendants slowly relaxed as they worked.Curiosity won over caution.
"Is it true humans cannot swim from birth?" one asked shyly.
I laughed. "Most of us definitely cannot."
Another leaned closer. "And the sky… does it truly stretch forever?"
"Yes," I said, smiling at their wide eyes.
"Sometimes it feels endless."
Their fascination made my nervousness fade. Instead of being examined like a specimen, I felt like someone sharing stories with new friends.
When they finished, one attendant shyly wished me a pleasant morning before leaving.
I watched them go, confused by the warmth lingering in the room.I had expected fear, not kindness.
The palace corridors were even more breathtaking in daylight.Living corals formed towering arches overhead, glowing faintly as currents flowed through them.
Servants moved gracefully between halls carrying luminous pearls, while scholars floated past arguing over ancient scrolls.
Everywhere I looked, life existed in perfect harmony with the ocean.
And everywhere I went… people stared.
Whispers followed behind me.
"That is the human."
"The Emperor spared her."
"She breathes without enchantment…"
I tried to ignore it, but my cheeks warmed.
"Do they always look at guests like this?" I whispered to Moana.
She hid a small smile. "We do not often have guests the Emperor personally protects."
Protects? The word settled heavily in my chest.
We passed a training arena where warriors practiced combat using currents shaped into weapons. One guard lost focus while watching me and nearly crashed into another soldier.
Several warriors laughed.Embarrassed, the guard straightened quickly.
Without thinking, I asked, "Are you okay?"
The laughter softened instantly. The guard looked genuinely startled that I spoke to him. "Yes, Lady Marimar."
I smiled in relief. "Good."
Something shifted after that. The warriors no longer watched me cautiously. A few nodded respectfully as we passed. One even adjusted the water current near my path so moving felt easier.
I wasn't sure if it was intentional. But it felt… welcoming.
The kitchens became my favorite discovery.Warm currents carried delicious scents through the entrance, pulling me inside before I could stop myself. Massive cooking stations filled the chamber, surrounded by busy chefs preparing meals for what must have been the entire palace.
Conversation stopped the moment I entered.
I froze. "Oh… I'm sorry. I didn't mean to interrupt."
An older woman swam forward, studying me closely before her face broke into excitement.
"The human guest!"
Suddenly everyone started talking at once.
"What do humans eat?"
"Do surface fruits really grow above water?"
"Can you taste sweetness the same way?"
They placed dishes in front of me faster than I could react. I hesitated before tasting one glowing shell-shaped dessert.
My eyes widened immediately. "That's amazing."
The cooks erupted into proud laughter.Someone insisted I try another dish. Another adjusted my sleeve so it wouldn't drift into the food. Their warmth felt effortless, genuine.
For the first time since arriving here, I forgot to be afraid,I laughed. And somehow, the palace laughed with me.
By the time we left the kitchens, guards greeted me openly instead of staring in silence. Servants bowed with real smiles.
Even passing nobles acknowledged me politely.I didn't understand when it happened.
But I no longer felt like an intruder.
I felt… noticed and accepted.
As evening approached, fatigue settled over me. Everything was still overwhelming, the magic, the palace, the Emperor but loneliness no longer pressed so heavily against my chest.
When I returned to my chamber, I paused at the doorway and looked back down the glowing corridor.
Yesterday, this place terrified me.Today… It felt a little like home.
I entered quietly, unaware that two guards outside immediately began arguing over who would take watch near my room.
Unaware that servants had begun speaking kindly about me.Unaware that somewhere high within the palace—silver eyes watched my every movement.
The Ocean Emperor did not approach.
He did not speak,He simply observed from afar, studying the strange human who laughed with his people… and calmed his kingdom without trying.
And though he did not yet understand why;the ocean itself seemed reluctant to let me out of its sight.
