The crystal ball floated in silence, carrying me through the twisting corridors of the palace. My heart thumped violently against my ribs, a drumbeat of fear and confusion.
What had just happened? Azarus…the Ocean Emperor…had stripped me without touching me, yet the way he had observed me made me feel exposed in every possible way.
My cheeks burned with humiliation, and I hugged myself tightly, wishing desperately that I could sink to the very bottom of the ocean to escape his gaze.
Yet, as the ball drifted through the halls, I couldn't deny a strange warmth in my chest. Something about him… about that moment… had unsettled me in a way I couldn't understand. I had always been careful.
His presence was terrifying, yet it pulled at me in a way that made my pulse skip.
Triton and Moana remained silent, their expressions carefully neutral, though I could sense their curiosity. I glanced at them nervously. "Um… are you always this… obedient to him?" I asked, trying to break the silence, my voice trembling.
They exchanged a quick glance. Moana's lips pressed into a thin line. "We… we obey out of respect" she replied carefully. "Disobedience… is… dangerous."
I swallowed, nodding slowly. Dangerous. That word felt like it carried a thousand unspoken threats. And yet, what had made my heart catch wasn't fear,it was the raw, unyielding authority that radiated from him, the absolute command of his presence.
As the ball glided silently, I caught glimpses of the palace I had only seen from a distance before. The walls shimmered like water under sunlight, the floors reflective and impossibly smooth, and the air itself seemed to hum with a life I couldn't explain. Servants and guards moved like shadows, avoiding the crystal ball as if they sensed the power contained within it.
And then… we arrived. The ball hovered in a grand chamber I had not expected. The ceiling arched high above, adorned with glowing corals and drifting sea plants that illuminated the room with a soft, ethereal light. The water around it shimmered, but there was no current, no disturbance, everything seemed to bow in reverence.
"Place her here," a voice commanded from a distance. My body stiffened. Azarus's voice carried through the water, calm but unyielding, the kind of authority that made even the bravest warriors obey without question.
The crystal ball gently descended and came to rest on a pedestal in the center of the chamber. I felt like a prisoner, yet somehow… I was more curious than afraid. My gaze roamed the chamber, trying to take in every detail…the walls were carved with symbols I didn't recognize, glowing faintly with blue light.
Strange creatures swam through the water above us, and the palace itself seemed alive, breathing in rhythm with the currents.
Then he appeared.
Azarus moved through the water with a grace that made my heart ache, the power he exuded was undeniable. His silver eyes, those terrifying, unreadable eyes locked onto me instantly. The crystal ball shimmered slightly as if acknowledging him, recognizing him as the master of all it contained.
"You're… free to leave the crystal?" he asked, his voice low, carrying a weight that made the water itself vibrate around me.
I froze. My mind spun. Free to leave? Did he mean… me? Outside the ball?
"Yes," Triton said quickly, as if reading my thoughts. "It is… safe"
The ball's surface shimmered, the glassy walls rippling. I held my breath as the magic began to dissolve around me.
Slowly, carefully, I felt my body lifted from the crystal sphere, the strange currents of the Emperor's magic cradling me as I descended into the water. I was fully submerged now, but the water didn't frighten me...something about it felt… protective and alive.
And then I saw him fully. Standing before me, calm and commanding, Azarus's gaze never wavered. His blue tail flicked gently behind him, sending ripples through the chamber that mirrored my own nervous tremors. Even his bare skin glimmered under the water, his body impossible and beautiful in a way that made me catch my breath.
"Do not fear," he said, his voice carrying authority yet something else—curiosity, I realized. "I did not touch you because it was unnecessary."
My lips parted, but no words came. I wanted to ask so many things, but the truth was, I didn't even understand what had just happened.
"Why… Why did your magic reject me?" I finally whispered, my voice small. "Why did the ocean itself… respond to me?"
Azarus tilted his head slightly, his expression unreadable. "You are… not of the ocean," he said slowly. "And yet… the ocean knows you. It recognizes something… extraordinary within you."
I swallowed hard. Not of the ocean? Extraordinary? The words sent a shiver down my spine. If he knew what I was… or sensed it, then… What did that mean?
The Emperor's gaze softened slightly…not enough to be comforting, but enough to make my heart thump like a drum against my chest. "You are rare," he said, almost to himself. "Something that should not exist… and yet, here you are."
I didn't know whether to be terrified or flattered. The air around us seemed to thrum with energy, a dangerous, powerful current that made the hairs on my arms stand on end.
Triton and Moana hovered nearby, their expressions cautious. Even they seemed to understand the weight of the moment, the rare significance of the Emperor speaking so openly.
I finally found my voice. "What… What do you want from me?"
Azarus's silver eyes glinted. "I want… to understand," he said. His voice was calm but carried an intensity that sent shivers down my spine. "I do not… act lightly. You have drawn the attention of the ocean itself. That is… dangerous for you, and for me."
The words hung between us, heavy and undeniable. I realized, in that moment, that nothing about this world, nothing about this Emperor, was ordinary. And somehow… I knew that my life had just become infinitely more complicated.
He extended a hand, not threatening, not touching, but offering. "Step closer. Let me see you fully. There is… something in you that the ocean will not allow me to ignore."
I hesitated, my chest tight, my mind spinning. But curiosity won over fear.
Slowly, I swam toward him, my eyes never leaving his. Every movement felt deliberate, measured, as if each second held the weight of centuries.
Azarus's gaze never wavered. He studied me carefully, silently, and for a moment, the entire chamber seemed to fade. There was no magic, no guards, no floating crystal ball. There was only him… and me.
And as our eyes locked, I realized something terrifying and exhilarating. For the first time since arriving in this world, I was not afraid of him. Not completely.
Because despite his absolute power, despite the fear he inspired, there was something in him…something that made me feel… recognized.
Something that made me feel alive.
And for the first time, I wondered if this terrifying, beautiful, lonely Emperor might also need me… just as much as I needed him.
