Chapter 5 - Confirmation

The clinic smelled faintly of antiseptic and something floral that tried too hard to mask it.

Shui Mingyun sat in the waiting area, back straight, hands resting lightly on her lap.

Calm.

At least, that's how she looked.

Around her, people moved in and out—students, couples, a middle-aged woman flipping through a magazine. Life continued as usual.

No one paid attention to her.

And that was exactly how she wanted it.

Rational Thinking

This is just a check.

Her thoughts were steady. Measured.

It could be stress. Irregular schedule. Bad food.

She had already listed every possible explanation.

Every reasonable explanation.

Because the alternative—

She didn't let herself finish that thought.

"Shui Mingyun."

She stood immediately.

"Here."

Inside the Room

The doctor didn't ask unnecessary questions.

Professional. Direct.

"When was your last cycle?"

Shui Mingyun answered without hesitation.

She had already calculated it.

Again.

And again.

And again.

The doctor nodded slightly, jotting something down.

"We'll run a test first."

Time Slows

Waiting felt different this time.

Not like the waiting outside.

This was… heavier.

Quieter.

Each second stretched just a little too long.

Shui Mingyun sat still, eyes lowered, fingers loosely intertwined.

She didn't fidget.

Didn't pace.

Didn't show anything.

But her mind was running through numbers, dates, probabilities—

Trying to stay ahead of something she could no longer control.

The Result

The door opened.

The doctor returned, holding a file.

A brief glance.

Then—

"You're pregnant."

Silence.

No dramatic reaction.

No visible shock.

Just a single, quiet pause.

"…I see," Shui Mingyun said.

Her voice didn't shake.

But Then—

"There's something else," the doctor added.

Shui Mingyun looked up.

For the first time since entering the clinic, her eyes showed a crack in composure.

The doctor turned the monitor slightly toward her.

"Based on the scan…"

A brief pause.

"…you're carrying triplets."

Stillness

The room didn't spin.

There was no sudden collapse.

No tears.

Just—

Stillness.

Her eyes remained on the screen.

Three.

Not one.

Three.

Her fingers tightened slightly in her lap.

"…Understood," she said quietly.

Reality Sets In

The doctor continued speaking—something about precautions, nutrition, risks.

Multiple pregnancy.

Higher demands.

Careful monitoring.

But the words blurred.

Not because she wasn't listening—

But because she already understood the weight of it.

Better than anyone.

Walking Out Alone

The sun outside was bright.

Too bright.

Shui Mingyun stepped out of the clinic, her pace steady, expression unchanged.

People passed her.

Cars moved.

Voices overlapped.

The world didn't stop.

The Decision

She stopped walking.

Just for a moment.

Her hand rested lightly on her abdomen.

Three lives.

Unplanned.

Unwanted—

No.

That wasn't right.

She closed her eyes briefly.

"…I'll keep them."

The decision came without hesitation.

No debate.

No second thoughts.

One More Thought

Gu Yi.

The name surfaced naturally.

Uninvited.

She stood there in silence for a few seconds.

Then—

"…No."

Her eyes opened again.

Clear.

Resolved.

"You don't need to be involved."

Not because she doubted him.

But because she didn't want to destroy his future before it even began.

End Hook

Somewhere on campus, Gu Yi sat in a lecture hall, focused on the board, unaware.

Unaware that his life had already changed.

Unaware that three lives now existed—

Connected to him.

Waiting.
