Chapter 9 - Unscheduled Arrival

Shui Mingyun learned one thing quickly—

Control only worked when nothing unexpected interfered.

The Message

Her phone buzzed during class.

She ignored it.

Then it buzzed again.

And again.

When the lecture ended, she finally glanced down.

Mom (3 missed calls)Mom: Call me when you're free. Urgent.

A faint crease formed between her brows.

She stepped outside before returning the call.

"…Hello."

"Mingyun."

Her mother didn't waste time.

"We're coming to see you this weekend."

Silence.

"…There's no need."

"It's been months," her mother continued gently. "Your father has time. We'll just stay for a day."

"I have classes."

"We won't disturb you."

A pause.

Too short.

Too calculated.

"…It's inconvenient," Shui Mingyun said.

On the other end, her mother went quiet.

Not upset.

Just… listening.

"Mingyun," she said softly, "are you hiding something from us?"

For the first time—

Shui Mingyun didn't answer immediately.

"…No."

The word came out steady.

But not as effortless as before.

"We'll see you Saturday," her mother said.

Call ended.

The First Real Problem

Shui Mingyun lowered her phone slowly.

Her mind was already moving.

Fast.

Timing.

Clothing.

Behavior.

Space.

Everything had to be adjusted.

Because this—

Wasn't something she could solve with distance alone.

Escalation

The next few days felt shorter.

Tighter.

Her schedule compressed.

Clinic visits had to be shifted.

Meals adjusted again.

Rest—reduced.

And her body noticed.

Fatigue lingered longer.

Movements required more awareness.

Even breathing felt… heavier at times.

Still—

She didn't stop.

Near Discovery — Closer Than Before

Friday afternoon.

Group discussion room.

Small space. Closed doors.

Too little air.

"…Mingyun, your part?"

She looked up.

A beat too slow.

"…Yes."

She stood.

And the moment she did—

The room tilted.

Not dramatically.

Not enough to fall.

But enough—

That her hand pressed briefly against the table.

A small sound.

Wood shifting.

Everyone noticed.

"…Hey—"

"I'm fine."

Too quick.

Too sharp.

But this time—

No one fully believed it.

A classmate frowned. "You don't look—"

"I said I'm fine."

Silence followed.

Awkward.

Lingering.

She finished her part.

Perfectly.

Clearly.

But when she sat down—

No one missed the slight delay in her movement.

Outside —

After the session, she left immediately.

Faster than usual.

The hallway felt too narrow.

Too crowded.

She needed air.

By the time she reached the stairwell—

Her steps slowed.

"…You're doing it again."

She froze.

Gu Yi.

Leaning lightly against the wall, arms crossed.

Like he had been waiting.

"…Coincidence," she said.

"Twice?"

A pause.

"…You should focus on your own schedule."

He didn't move.

Didn't argue.

"…You're getting worse."

Her expression didn't change.

But her fingers tightened slightly at her side.

"I'm not."

"Then prove it."

A beat.

"…I don't need to."

Silence.

For a moment—

They just stood there.

Then—

Gu Yi exhaled quietly.

Not frustrated.

Not angry.

Just… unconvinced.

"…Fine," he said.

And stepped aside.

Letting her pass.

But his gaze followed her longer this time.

The Clock Runs Out

Saturday was coming.

Too fast.

That night, Shui Mingyun stood in front of the mirror.

Loose clothing.

Angles.

Posture.

Movement.

Everything had to be controlled.

Because this wasn't just about hiding something small anymore.

It was about hiding something that—

Couldn't stay hidden much longer.

Miles away—

Her parents were already preparing for the trip.

Unaware.

Expecting nothing unusual.

On campus—

Gu Yi stared at his desk, unmoving.

Because now—

It wasn't just a feeling anymore.

Something was wrong.

And he was starting to realize—

He might not be able to ignore it.
