Chapter 8 - Pressure Point

It started like any other day.

That was the problem.

Pushing Too Far

Shui Mingyun woke up before her alarm.

Not out of discipline.

Out of discomfort.

A dull heaviness settled low in her body, unfamiliar yet increasingly persistent.

She sat up slowly, pausing at the edge of the bed.

Breathe in.

Breathe out.

Control it.

"I'm fine."

The words were softer now.

Not weaker.

Just… repeated more often.

She didn't skip class.

She didn't adjust her schedule.

She didn't allow herself that luxury.

Warning Signs

By mid-morning, the fatigue had settled deeper.

Her notes were still precise.

Her posture still straight.

But her movements—

Slightly slower.

Slightly more careful.

"…Mingyun?"

She looked up.

Her classmate hesitated. "You sure you're okay? You look worse today."

"I said I'm fine."

Same answer.

Same tone.

But this time—

It didn't land as cleanly.

The Moment

It happened between buildings.

Not in class.

Not somewhere controlled.

Open space.

Concrete path.

Students passing by.

Voices blending into the background.

Shui Mingyun's steps slowed.

Just slightly.

Then—

Stopped.

A sharp wave hit without warning.

Stronger than before.

Heavier.

Her vision blurred for half a second—not enough to panic, but enough to disrupt.

Her hand reached out—

Not dramatically.

Just instinctively.

The nearest bench.

She sat down.

Carefully.

Quietly.

But she didn't stand back up.

Stillness

Her head lowered slightly.

Breathing steady—but deliberate.

One hand rested against her abdomen.

Not protective.

Not obvious.

Just… there.

"…Not now."

Barely a whisper.

People passed.

Some glanced.

Most didn't care.

But someone did.

Witness

Gu Yi had been heading back from the library.

No rush.

No urgency.

Until he saw her.

He stopped.

Something about the scene didn't fit.

Not the setting.

Not the timing.

Her.

Shui Mingyun didn't sit like that.

Didn't pause like that.

Didn't look like—

That.

He hesitated.

Only for a second.

Then walked over.

Closer Than Before

"You're not fine."

No greeting.

No buildup.

She didn't look up immediately.

"…I didn't ask for your opinion."

Her voice was steady.

But quieter than usual.

Gu Yi frowned slightly.

"You can barely stand."

"I'm sitting."

A pause.

"…That's not the point."

She exhaled slowly.

Then finally looked up.

For a moment—

Her composure slipped.

Not completely.

Not obviously.

But enough.

Enough for him to see—

This wasn't normal.

"…It's just low blood sugar," she said.

An explanation.

Prepared.

Controlled.

Gu Yi didn't respond immediately.

Because something about that answer—

Didn't sit right.

"…Did you eat?"

"Yes."

Too fast.

Another pause.

"…You should go," she added, her gaze already shifting away.

Dismissive.

Creating distance.

Like always.

But this time—

He didn't move.

A Line That Doesn't Break Easily

"Can you stand?"

Her fingers tightened slightly.

"…Yes."

"Then do it."

A beat.

Not commanding.

Not harsh.

Just—

Direct.

Shui Mingyun held his gaze for a second.

Then—

Slowly—

She stood.

Stable.

Controlled.

But not effortless.

Gu Yi noticed.

He didn't say it.

"…See?" she said quietly. "I'm fine."

She stepped past him.

This time—

Her pace was steady.

But not as fast as before.

 Changes

Gu Yi didn't follow.

Didn't stop her.

Didn't push further.

But he didn't look away either.

Because now—

He was sure.

"…That's not nothing," he muttered.

Aftermath

That night—

Shui Mingyun didn't study.

She lay on her bed, one arm resting lightly over her eyes.

The ceiling blurred above her.

She had miscalculated.

Not the situation.

Not the numbers.

Herself.

"…I need to adjust."

Her voice was calm again.

But the margin for error had just disappeared.

For the first time—

The distance between them didn't feel stable.

Because one side—

Was starting to see through it.

And the other—

Could no longer maintain it perfectly.
