Chapter 6 - Silent Distance

The change wasn't obvious.

That was the point.

Small Adjustments

Shui Mingyun stood in front of a convenience store shelf, her gaze scanning labels more carefully than she ever had before.

Ingredients.

Sugar levels.

Expiration dates.

Things she had never paid attention to now felt… necessary.

After a moment, she reached out—then paused.

Her hand hovered briefly before switching to something else.

A quieter choice.

Safer.

She didn't tell anyone.

Not her classmates.

Not her roommates.

Not even the people who occasionally checked in on her.

Because nothing was wrong.

At least, nothing that needed to be said out loud.

Routine—Rewritten

Her schedule changed.

Subtly.

Morning classes? Still attended.

Group discussions? Still present.

But late-night outings?

Declined.

Caffeine?

Reduced.

Meals?

Regular. Intentional.

She began leaving campus at odd hours—times when fewer people noticed.

A clinic visit here.

A pharmacy stop there.

Always alone.

Always composed.

The Body Keeps Count

Fatigue came first.

Not overwhelming—just enough to slow her down.

A slight heaviness in her limbs by midday.

Then nausea.

Predictable, almost.

Morning.

Early afternoon.

She learned how to manage it.

Water. Breathing. Timing.

No one noticed.

Because she didn't let them.

Distance Without Words

"You've been quieter lately."

A classmate said it casually, not accusing—just observant.

Shui Mingyun looked up from her notes.

"Have I?"

A small, polite smile.

"Probably just tired."

The answer was accepted easily.

Why wouldn't it be?

She gave no reason to question it.

Near Miss

Late afternoon.

Campus pathways filled with students heading back to their dorms.

Gu Yi walked with Chen Hao, half-listening to him complain about an assignment.

"…and I'm telling you, that professor definitely has something against me—"

Gu Yi's steps slowed.

Not by much.

Just enough.

Ahead, near the shaded walkway—

A familiar figure.

Shui Mingyun.

She stood still for a moment, one hand lightly gripping her bag strap, her posture as straight as ever.

But something was…

Off.

Not obvious.

Just—

Different.

"…Oi, are you listening?" Chen Hao nudged him.

"…Yeah."

But Gu Yi didn't look away immediately.

For a second—maybe two—he considered it.

Walking over.

Saying something.

Anything.

Then she moved.

Turned.

And walked in the opposite direction.

Gu Yi stood there for half a beat longer.

"…Forget it," he muttered under his breath, continuing forward.

Chen Hao didn't notice anything.

But Gu Yi's mind didn't settle as easily after that.

A Different Kind of Planning

That night, Shui Mingyun sat at her desk.

Not with textbooks.

Not with notes.

But with a blank page.

Numbers.

Estimates.

Rent.

Food.

Medical costs.

Time.

She wrote everything down.

Carefully.

Logically.

As if solving a problem.

Three.

Her pen paused slightly.

Then continued.

She didn't look overwhelmed.

Didn't hesitate.

Didn't panic.

But the page filled slower than usual.

Because this wasn't an exam.

There was no margin for error.

Another Glimpse

A few days later.

Library.

Quiet. Still.

Gu Yi sat by the window, flipping through pages, focused—at least on the surface.

Then—

Movement.

Across the aisle.

Shui Mingyun.

She was sitting alone.

A book open in front of her, untouched for longer than it should've been.

Her gaze wasn't on the page.

It was distant.

Elsewhere.

For a moment, their eyes almost met.

Almost.

She lowered her gaze first.

Closed the book.

And stood up.

By the time Gu Yi looked again—

She was gone.

"…Weird," he murmured.

He didn't know why he said it.

Or why it stayed on his mind longer than it should have.

Holding the Line

Weeks passed.

The distance held.

Carefully maintained.

Deliberately preserved.

Shui Mingyun adjusted.

Adapted.

Endured.

Without asking for help.

Without looking back.

But distance wasn't absence.

And silence…

Didn't mean disconnection.

End Hook

Three lives grew quietly in the background of an ordinary campus.

Unseen.

Unspoken.

And somewhere within that same space—

Two people continued moving forward.

Closer…

Without realizing it.
