Morning came slowly to the forest, the first light filtering through tall ancient trees like golden spears piercing the mist. Dew clung to the leaves and the air carried the rich scent of earth, moss, and distant rain.
But the calm was deceptive.
Lyra could feel it the moment she opened her eyes.
The forest was watching her.
Not with hostility… but with curiosity.
Her wolf stirred restlessly inside her chest as she stepped outside the Alpha house. The moon's energy from the previous night still lingered in her veins, humming like a quiet storm beneath her skin.
She had passed the first trial.
But today felt different.
More serious.
More dangerous.
Darius was already waiting in the clearing.
His arms were folded, golden eyes sharp as he studied the forest around them. A few warriors stood behind him at a distance, watching silently.
Lyra approached.
"You're early," she said.
Darius glanced at her.
"For what we're about to do, there's no such thing as early."
Her wolf gave a low growl of anticipation.
"This is the second trial?" she asked.
Darius nodded.
"Yes. And this one will be real."
Lyra's pulse quickened.
Not illusions.
Not simulations.
Real enemies.
Darius gestured toward the deeper forest.
"Beyond that ridge lies the old hunting grounds. Creatures there have lived for centuries. They are stronger than ordinary wolves, faster than most hunters, and far more intelligent."
Lyra raised an eyebrow.
"So you're sending me to fight monsters?"
Darius's lips curved slightly.
"I'm sending you to prove you can survive them."
A low rumble echoed in the distance.
Lyra's wolf immediately rose to attention.
Something was moving in the forest.
Something large.
Darius stepped closer to her.
"This trial has three rules," he said quietly.
Lyra listened carefully.
"First—you fight with your Moonborn power."
"Second—you rely on your wolf instincts."
"And third…"
His golden eyes locked with hers.
"You do not run."
Lyra smiled faintly.
"I never planned to."
Darius stepped back.
"Then the hunt begins."
Before Lyra could respond—
A deafening roar tore through the forest.
The ground trembled beneath her feet.
Birds exploded from the trees in a frantic storm of wings.
Then it appeared.
From the shadows between the ancient trees emerged a massive creature.
It looked like a wolf…
But far larger.
Its body was nearly twice the size of a normal wolf, muscles rippling beneath dark fur streaked with silver scars. Its eyes burned with a deep emerald glow, ancient and intelligent.
Lyra's breath caught.
"That's not a wolf," she whispered.
Darius's voice remained calm.
"It's a Shadow Fang."
The creature snarled, revealing rows of razor-sharp teeth.
"They've lived in these woods longer than our pack," Darius continued. "They only respect strength."
The Shadow Fang lowered its body.
Preparing to attack.
Lyra's wolf surged forward inside her.
Silver energy sparked across her skin.
"Good," Darius murmured quietly.
The creature lunged.
It moved like lightning.
Lyra barely had time to react.
She twisted aside as claws tore through the air where her head had been seconds earlier. The force of the strike cracked the ground.
Lyra rolled and sprang to her feet.
Her silver aura burst outward like moonlight exploding into the clearing.
The Shadow Fang paused.
Its glowing eyes studied her carefully.
Then it attacked again.
This time faster.
Lyra raised her hand and released a pulse of Moonborn energy.
Silver light collided with the creature mid-air.
The impact shook the clearing.
But instead of falling back…
The Shadow Fang landed smoothly.
Unharmed.
Lyra blinked in surprise.
"Seriously?"
The creature growled.
Then it began circling her slowly.
Testing her.
Darius watched from the edge of the clearing but didn't move.
Lyra understood.
This fight was hers alone.
Her wolf growled deeply.
Fine.
If the creature wanted a real fight…
She would give it one.
The silver aura around her intensified.
Energy flowed through her limbs, sharpening her reflexes, strengthening her muscles.
The Shadow Fang charged again.
This time Lyra moved first.
She leapt forward.
Their bodies collided in a blur of motion.
Claws struck.
Energy exploded.
The creature's massive tail slammed into her side, sending her skidding across the forest floor.
Pain shot through her ribs.
But Lyra forced herself back up.
The Shadow Fang lunged again.
Lyra jumped upward, flipping over its back and landing behind it.
Her hand glowed with bright silver power.
She slammed the energy directly into the creature's side.
A shockwave rippled through the clearing.
The Shadow Fang staggered.
Then it turned slowly.
Its emerald eyes now burned with something new.
Respect.
Lyra straightened, breathing hard.
Her aura flickered but remained strong.
"Still want to fight?" she asked breathlessly.
The creature stared at her for a long moment.
Then—
It stepped back.
And lowered its head.
Lyra blinked.
It was… bowing.
From the edge of the clearing, the warriors gasped softly.
Darius smiled faintly.
"She passed," he said quietly.
Lyra stared in disbelief.
"That's it?"
Darius walked toward her.
"The Shadow Fang only bows to those it recognizes as stronger."
Lyra looked back at the creature.
It was already retreating into the forest shadows.
But before disappearing completely…
It glanced back at her once more.
As if acknowledging her.
Lyra exhaled slowly.
"That was insane."
Darius stopped beside her.
"And that was only the beginning."
Lyra frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Darius looked deeper into the forest.
His expression darkened.
"Shadow Fangs never travel alone."
Right on cue—
Another roar echoed through the trees.
Then another.
And another.
Lyra's eyes widened.
Multiple massive shapes began emerging from the darkness.
Three.
Five.
Seven.
A whole pack.
Lyra slowly turned toward Darius.
"You said this was a trial."
Darius nodded calmly.
"It is."
Lyra stared at the approaching creatures.
"Pretty sure this is an execution."
Darius smirked slightly.
"Not if the future Alpha survives."
Lyra's wolf roared inside her.
Her silver aura exploded brighter than ever.
"Fine," she said.
"Let's see how many I can take."
The Shadow Fangs charged.
And the real battle began.
