Chapter 23 - A Familiar Face

The elegant woman returned three days later.

Stephanie noticed her the moment the door opened.

The same confident walk.

The same calm smile.

She sat at the same table near the window like she had done before.

Maya leaned closer to Stephanie and whispered, "Your rich friend is back."

Stephanie rolled her eyes slightly.

"She's not my friend."

But for some reason, Stephanie felt a small sense of relief seeing a familiar customer.

She walked over to the table.

"Good afternoon," Stephanie said politely.

The woman looked up and smiled.

"Good afternoon. I was hoping you would be here."

Stephanie blinked slightly, surprised.

"I come here often," she replied.

"That's good," the woman said softly. "I enjoyed the food the last time."

Maya soon brought the meal, placing it carefully on the table.

The woman thanked her and began eating again.

Just like before, she seemed to observe everything quietly.

The way the girls moved around the kitchen.

The way Stephanie handled customers.

The way Maya joked with people who came in.

After finishing her meal, she walked back to the counter.

"You two really run this place alone now?" she asked.

Stephanie nodded.

"The owner had to leave for a while."

"That must be difficult," the woman said thoughtfully.

"It is sometimes," Maya admitted.

"But we manage," Stephanie added.

The woman studied them for a moment.

"You're both very young to be carrying such responsibility."

Stephanie shrugged slightly.

"We didn't really have much choice."

For a moment, the woman's expression softened.

"Life does that sometimes."

She reached into her purse and placed money on the counter.

But this time she left more than the cost of the meal.

Stephanie frowned slightly.

"You gave too much."

"Consider it a tip," the woman replied with a small smile.

Maya's eyes widened.

"That's a very big tip."

The woman laughed softly.

"I believe in supporting hardworking people."

Then she leaned slightly closer to the counter.

"Tell me something," she said.

"Have either of you ever thought about leaving this place?"

Stephanie felt a strange pause inside her chest.

Leaving.

She had thought about it many times.

But she had never said it out loud.

Maya glanced at Stephanie before answering.

"Sometimes," Maya said carefully.

The woman nodded slowly.

"I travel often for business," she continued. "Different cities. Different countries."

Stephanie's curiosity grew.

"Countries?" Maya repeated.

"Yes," the woman said calmly.

"There are places where young girls like you could build a better future."

Stephanie didn't know why… but her heart started beating a little faster.

A better future.

The woman picked up her purse.

"Well," she said gently, "perhaps we'll talk more about that another time."

Then she walked toward the door.

Just before leaving, she turned back toward them.

"My name is Vanessa," she said.

Then she smiled and disappeared outside.

Maya immediately grabbed Stephanie's arm.

"Did you hear that?" she whispered excitedly.

Stephanie stared at the door for a moment.

"Yes," she said quietly.

She heard it.

But what she didn't know…

Was that the path Vanessa was slowly opening for them…

Would take her thousands of miles away.

Closer to the truth about her past than she had ever imagined.
