Chapter 29 - Too Late

Stephanie's mother stood frozen at the doorway.

The neighbor's words echoed again and again in her mind.

I think I saw Stephanie at the airport…

For a moment, she couldn't breathe.

"You're sure it was her?" she asked, her voice trembling.

The neighbor nodded slowly.

"I've known that girl since she was little. I'm almost certain it was her."

Stephanie's mother held onto the doorframe for support.

"She was with another girl," the neighbor continued gently. "And a woman. They were boarding an international flight."

The words hit her like a heavy weight.

"International…" she whispered.

The neighbor's face softened with sympathy.

"I tried to reach them, but the crowd was too much. By the time I got closer, they had already gone through security."

Stephanie's mother closed her eyes.

So many nights she had prayed for a sign.

Any sign that her daughter was safe.

And now she finally had one.

But it came with a painful truth.

Stephanie was gone.

Far away.

"Thank you for telling me," she said quietly.

The neighbor placed a comforting hand on her arm.

"I hope she's safe."

After the neighbor left, the house became silent again.

Stephanie's mother slowly walked inside.

Her steps felt heavier than usual.

She passed the living room… then the hallway… until she reached the door she had been avoiding for months.

Stephanie's room.

She pushed the door open.

The room still looked the same.

The small desk.

The bed.

The window where Stephanie used to sit and stare outside when she was upset.

Her mother walked inside slowly and sat on the edge of the bed.

For a long time, she said nothing.

Then her eyes fell on the letter again.

The letter Stephanie had written on her seventeenth birthday.

Her hands trembled as she picked it up.

Tears began to fall before she could stop them.

"I was looking for you," she whispered through her tears.

"I've been looking everywhere."

Her voice broke.

"I'm sorry, Stephanie… I'm so sorry."

The quiet room offered no answer.

Only memories.

Her daughter had finally been found.

But she had already left the country.

And now the distance between them felt bigger than ever.
