Chapter 24 - An Offer Too Good

Vanessa began visiting the eatery more often.

At first it was once every few days.

Then it became almost every evening.

Sometimes she stayed longer than usual, sitting by the window while talking with Stephanie and Maya when the shop was quiet.

She always asked questions.

Not in a suspicious way.

Just enough to learn more about them.

One evening, after most of the customers had left, Vanessa leaned comfortably against the counter while Stephanie wiped the tables.

"You girls work very hard," she said.

Maya laughed tiredly.

"You have no idea."

Vanessa smiled slightly.

"I think I do."

Stephanie noticed the thoughtful look in her eyes.

"You travel for business, right?" Maya asked curiously.

"Yes," Vanessa replied. "Quite often."

"Where?" Maya asked eagerly.

Vanessa paused for a moment before answering.

"France."

Stephanie looked up.

France.

The word felt strange in her ears, but something about it sounded… far away. Peaceful.

"Is it nice there?" Maya asked.

Vanessa chuckled softly.

"Very beautiful. Quiet streets. Small cafés. People who appreciate good food."

She glanced around the eatery.

"Places like this."

Maya's eyes lit up.

"That sounds amazing."

Stephanie stayed quiet, listening.

Vanessa studied her for a moment before speaking again.

"Actually," she said slowly, "I've been thinking about something."

The girls looked at her.

"I run a small hospitality business there," Vanessa continued. "Restaurants, cafés… things like that."

Stephanie frowned slightly.

"You own restaurants?"

"A few," Vanessa replied calmly.

Then she leaned a little closer.

"I've been looking for young people who are hardworking. People who want a new beginning."

Maya blinked.

"A new beginning?"

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes. Somewhere far from their problems."

Stephanie felt something tighten in her chest.

Far from their problems.

Far from her past.

Vanessa noticed the look on her face.

"You seem like someone who could do very well in a place like that," she said gently.

Stephanie looked away.

"I've never even left this city."

Vanessa smiled.

"Sometimes the best opportunities are the ones that take you the farthest."

The shop grew quiet for a moment.

Then Vanessa picked up her purse.

"I'm not asking for an answer now," she said calmly.

"But if you ever want to change your lives…"

She slid a small card onto the counter.

"My number is on that card."

Maya picked it up carefully.

Vanessa walked toward the door.

But just before leaving, she looked back at Stephanie again.

"Think about it," she said.

Then she disappeared into the night.

Maya stared at the card like it was treasure.

"Stephanie… this could change everything."

Stephanie looked at the small card in Maya's hand.

Part of her felt nervous.

But another part of her felt something she hadn't felt in a long time.

Hope.

What she didn't know…

Was that Vanessa's kindness was only a mask.

And the road she was offering them…

Was far more dangerous than they could imagine.
