Chapter 26 - The Offer

Vanessa returned two evenings later.

The eatery was quieter than usual. Only a few customers sat at the tables while Stephanie and Maya moved around the kitchen, trying to keep up with the small rush.

When the door opened and Vanessa stepped in, Maya immediately noticed her.

"She's here," Maya whispered.

Stephanie looked up.

Vanessa smiled as she walked toward the counter like she had done many times before.

"Good evening, girls."

"Good evening," Stephanie replied politely.

Vanessa ordered her usual meal and sat near the window.

But this time, she didn't seem interested in eating slowly or observing the room.

Instead, she seemed to be waiting.

When the last customer finally left and the shop grew quiet, Vanessa stood up and walked toward the counter.

"Well," she said calmly, "have you thought about what we discussed?"

Maya glanced quickly at Stephanie.

Stephanie hesitated.

"We talked about it," she admitted.

Vanessa nodded.

"And?"

"We're not sure yet," Stephanie said carefully.

Vanessa didn't look disappointed.

In fact, she seemed almost amused.

"That's understandable," she said gently. "Leaving everything behind is never an easy decision."

She opened her purse and took out a small envelope.

She placed it on the counter.

Maya looked at it curiously.

"What's that?"

Vanessa pushed the envelope toward them.

"Information," she said.

Stephanie slowly opened it.

Inside were papers.

And two plane tickets.

Her eyes widened.

Maya gasped loudly.

"Wait… these are real?"

Vanessa smiled calmly.

"I told you I travel often."

Stephanie stared at the tickets.

The destination printed on them made her heart race.

France.

"You already bought these?" Stephanie asked, confused.

Vanessa shrugged slightly.

"I like to prepare ahead."

"But… what if we said no?" Maya asked.

Vanessa leaned lightly against the counter.

"Then I would simply cancel them."

Her voice was so relaxed that it almost made everything feel normal.

But Stephanie felt a strange tension in her chest.

"This is a big decision," she said quietly.

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes. It is."

Then she looked directly at Stephanie.

"But sometimes life gives you one door out of a difficult place."

She tapped the tickets lightly.

"This could be yours."

Silence filled the room.

Maya looked excited.

Stephanie looked uncertain.

Vanessa picked up her purse again.

"I'll give you a few days to decide," she said.

Then she began walking toward the door.

But before leaving, she turned back once more.

"One more thing," she added.

"If you stay here… your lives will probably stay exactly the same."

Her eyes moved between the two girls.

"But if you come with me…"

She smiled slightly.

"Everything could change."

Then she stepped outside and disappeared into the night.

Maya immediately grabbed the tickets again.

"Stephanie… this is real."

Stephanie stared at the papers.

France felt so far away.

So different.

And maybe…

Exactly what she needed.

What she didn't realize…

Was that the decision she was about to make…

Would change her life forever.
