Chapter 22 - The Elegant Stranger

Running the eatery without Rosa was harder than Stephanie and Maya had imagined.

The mornings were the worst.

They woke up before the sun, rushing to prepare ingredients while trying to remember everything Rosa had taught them. Some days the soup was too salty. Other days the rice burned slightly at the bottom of the pot.

Customers still came, but the girls could tell something felt different.

Rosa had always made everything look so easy.

One quiet afternoon, the door of the eatery opened softly.

Stephanie looked up from the counter.

The woman who stepped inside did not look like their usual customers.

She was young maybe in her late twenties or early thirties. Her long coat looked expensive, and her heels clicked softly against the floor as she walked in.

Her presence alone seemed to fill the small shop.

Maya leaned slightly toward Stephanie and whispered, "She looks like she belongs in a five-star restaurant, not here."

Stephanie tried not to stare.

The woman smiled politely as she approached the counter.

"Good afternoon," she said gently.

Her voice was calm and confident.

"Good afternoon," Stephanie replied.

"I'll have whatever your most popular meal is."

Stephanie nodded and went to the kitchen while Maya quickly prepared the food.

A few minutes later, the woman sat quietly by the window as she ate.

She didn't rush.

Instead, she looked around the eatery slowly, almost like she was studying the place… and the girls.

When she finished eating, she returned to the counter.

"That was very good," she said with a warm smile.

Maya brightened immediately.

"Thank you!"

The woman looked at both girls carefully.

"Do you two run this place alone?"

Stephanie hesitated before answering.

"We… help manage it."

The woman raised an eyebrow slightly, impressed.

"That's quite a responsibility for girls your age."

Stephanie shrugged lightly.

"We manage."

The woman smiled again, but this time there was something thoughtful in her eyes.

"Well," she said as she placed the payment on the counter, "I travel a lot for business. I might start coming here more often."

"You're welcome anytime," Maya said happily.

The woman nodded and turned toward the door.

Before leaving, she glanced back at Stephanie for a brief moment.

Almost like she was thinking about something.

Then she walked out.

The bell above the door rang softly as it closed behind her.

Maya leaned closer to Stephanie immediately.

"She's rich," Maya whispered excitedly.

Stephanie laughed quietly.

"You decided that just from looking at her?"

Maya crossed her arms confidently.

"I can tell."

Stephanie shook her head with a small smile.

But something about the woman lingered in her mind.

And she didn't know why.

Outside, the elegant stranger stood beside a black car parked across the street.

She looked back at the small eatery thoughtfully.

Then she smiled to herself.

"Interesting," she murmured softly before getting into the car.
