"It's Kaden's birthday soon, isn't it?"
The question came from Abigail. The girl placed a document on Roseanne's desk that still needed a signature then greeted her with a warm smile.
Roseanne returned it. "It is," she said. "He's been counting down the days."
"As he should be. He's turning four!" Abigail added excitedly and proudly.
Abigail did not get many chances to see Kaden, but whenever he came by, she always made time to talk to him for a while.
"Is he going to celebrate it with his friends in daycare?"
"Is he celebrating with his friends from daycare?"
That had been the plan.
Roseanne had already imagined small shoes lined up neatly by the door, too much sugar, and loud laughter filling the house. She was going to invite his preschool and daycare friends over, picturing the place alive with noise and joy.
But things had changed since Czar and everything that followed. That plan no longer fit their situation.
