Chapter 15 - WHISPERS BY THE LAKE

"Ollie, Gen, for goodness sake, help me out here. I know both of you could really use some fuckery, but I really need a hand with these heavy things." Oliver and Genevieve reluctantly ended their make-out session. They unloaded the carriage full of groceries when the carriage was almost empty, Robelia decided to cover for them. The lovers rarely met, and she didn't want to be in their way. "That's why I love you, Liya." Genevieve excitedly hugged and kissed her before going off with Oliver to who knows where.

Soon, it was lunch break. Robellia went down to the lake. Maximus was nowhere to be seen, so she decided to jump scare him like the good old days, though it never actually worked. As she thought about the best hiding spot, she jumped and turned, taking a few steps back as she heard a voice right by her ear: "I hope you were thinking of me." Robellia looked at Maximus as she held her chest, "Are you trying to kill me?" she yelled, looking ballistic. "Come on, little bunny, your heart can't be that fragile," Maximus teased as he sat under a tree. robellia looked at him. "Are you always in need of an invitation, little bunny?" Robellia rolled her eyes as she sat next to him.

"So tell me, little bunny, where were you thinking of me just a moment ago?" Maximus looked at her as she enjoyed the scenery. "Some things never get old. You are still so.... well, you and this place. It's just like the first time you brought me here." Robellia responded, "Avoiding the question. Good for you." Robellia turned to him, "Goodness, Max. Try to enjoy the scenery. I'm sure there wasn't any pleasant scenery during the war." Maximus looked back at the lake and smiled, "Well, I had one of my own engraved right in my heart." "Oh my, you almost sound poetic and human," Robellia said sarcastically. "Don't tell me the rumors got to you, too." Maximus feigned sorrow.

Robellia laughed, "I almost forgot to hand this to you." She took out his handkerchief from her pocket. Maximus smiled as he accepted the handkerchief, "I have something for you as well." he took out a handkerchief with her favorite snack. Robellia looked at the handkerchief and then at Maximus. She bit her lower lip as tears threatened to fall. Maximus sighed as he pulled her into a hug. "Do you know how empty and lonely I felt after you left me? I missed you every single day, and I'd sit here each day with this handkerchief in my pocket waiting to give it back to you." Robellia broke down in his arms.

"I didn't want to leave you, little bunny, but I had to. With you right here, I get to be max, but out there is the crown prince and the weight of that responsibility...... it broke me to leave you like that. I missed you so much. I tried to cope with the void in my heart. The beautiful scenery I carried in my heart was of you dancing around by the lake. You helped me go on in the darkest of days." Maximus coaxed her. All the blood he had spilled, the gruesome things he had done. They proved he was the monster they said he was. The years on that battlefield had just brought the worst in him, but that wasn't what Robellia thought of him. She painted him as this loving, caring man, and he didn't want her to see him any differently. Maybe he could be like that with her.

Robellia held onto him as though he'd disappear at any moment."Thank you for coming back to me. I know how hard it is for you right now. War changes people. It broke me. I watched as my people died screaming in pain as they burned alive. I saw them burn my father at the stake. At times, you could still hear the screams; the fire is so vivid it burns even in my memories. It helps when you have someone to talk to. I'm right here, Max. right here." Maximus tucked away the strands of her hair covering her face as he looked down at her, resting her head on his chest. "Yes, you are my little bunny." They stayed that way for a few more minutes. "I have to go back." Robellia looked up at him, "Stay, little bunny. I promise I'll have it taken care of." "But, Max......." Maximus looked down at her. "It's only this one time, and no one knows you are with me. Besides, there is much I'd like to catch up on." Robellia gave in.

"Good little bunny. Now tell me all about this stableboy." Robellia looked at him as she moved away slightly, "Max, I know that look. It's the same look you had when you asked about Cleo. And what happened to Cleo? Well, the larger bandage on her face was a grand story. So, no, I'm not talking about my ex-boyfriend with you." "Oh come on, littlebunny." Maximus tried to persuade her. "No am not doing that." "Well, I have my ways." Robellia sighed. "Okay, fine, I'll tell you."
