"Such an in-law you are," Lukas muttered, trying to swallow the pain weighing heavily in his chest. A moment of silence settled between them, thick and suffocating, before the tension ebbed and his knees weakened beneath him.
Looking up, he caught the shadowed expression on Roland's face—a mask hiding the same pain Lukas felt, though he couldn't quite read it. He murmured, "Damn it! Am I the only one who can't accept things as they are?"
"You know that's not true, right?" Roland said gently as he lifted Lukas effortlessly off the ground. He brushed the dust from Lukas's shirt—the same dust that had settled when Lukas punched the wall in frustration—and gave him a sympathetic look.
"Knowing Rain, she wouldn't want to see you like this. And in our world, where our lives hinge on the whims of fickle gods, no one can ever be certain what tomorrow will bring."
