The group's heads turned toward him, shadows of dread crossing their faces as the harsh reality of their world settled over them.
Nuk continued, "Hey now, did you expect our help to come for free?"
"Wait!" Roland struggled to stand, legs trembling beneath him and eyes unfocused, but he forced himself to kneel before Nuk. His voice was desperate. "We don't have much, but please—leave us just enough to get back to our shelter."
Joshua appeared suddenly behind Nuk, teleporting with effortless grace. "Are you seriously asking us to negotiate?" he sneered. "We want everything."
Roland let out a bitter, resigned sigh as he collapsed onto the soft sand. "To think my guess was right… and we've encountered the real ones."
