The glass shards… they didn't shatter.
They were suspended in the air before they could even touch the ground, as if time itself had stopped. Veronica's eyes widened in disbelief.
"This… is impossible…"
She slowly looked up at him. He was still holding her with that same unnerving calmness, that same cold gaze. He didn't move. He didn't flinch. It was as if what had just happened meant nothing to him.
She quickly backed away, stumbling a step backward. "You… what did you do?!"
He didn't answer her directly. Instead, he simply raised his hand slightly. In an instant, every shard of glass rose from the ground, spinning slowly around him as if they were obeying his every command.
Veronica gasped, unconsciously pressing her hand over her mouth. Her heart began to race wildly.
"No…" she whispered, backing away further. "You're not… an ordinary human…"
The shards stopped suddenly. Then, in a blur of motion, they shot toward the wall behind her at high speed, slamming into it with enough force to embed themselves like knives.
Her whole body trembled. Ethan approached her slowly, and with every step he took, her heartbeat quickened. Her eyes were locked onto his gray ones—cold, and completely devoid of hesitation.
"You were wondering…" he said calmly, his voice steady. "If humans could protect you."
He moved closer until only a few inches separated them.
"I can… and I will."
