Several years later...
She was walking through the halls of her private clinic, a cup of coffee in her hand.
She opened the door to her office to find Ayla serving tea to Ethan, who was sitting there waiting for her.
He stood up as soon as she entered.
"I've been waiting for you, Veronica."
Veronica: "What are you doing here? Are you never going to stop following me?"
Ethan: "I'm your guardian. Have you forgotten that?"
Veronica: "Protect me from what? And from whom? All these years, you haven't stopped following me around like my shadow. Have I been hurt? Has anyone been after me? No. So stop this nonsense."
Ethan stepped closer to her, looking into her eyes with chilling calm.
"Have you forgotten that today is your thirtieth birthday?"
She moved even closer to him until only a few inches separated them.
"My powers have been gone from my body for over a month now… If Atlas wanted to kill me, he would have done it a long time ago. I hate you following me everywhere; you're suffocating me! I don't want you to protect me from anyone—just protect me from yourself and leave… Don't ever show your face to me again."
Ethan left in total silence, without saying a single word.
Ayla approached her softly. "I think you—"
Veronica cut her off sharply: "I don't care how he feels; I just want my freedom."
Ayla stepped forward, holding a phone in her hands.
"Ethan forgot his phone."
Veronica: "Give it to him. I'm going to see my patients."
Ayla hurried out, calling for Ethan before he could get into his car.
He turned toward her and sighed softly. "Yes, Ayla?"
Ayla: "You forgot your phone."
Ethan: "Thank you. I left in a hurry."
He took the phone from her hand, and the moment his fingers brushed against hers… her heart began to race
