Chapter 33 - Why They Hid the Truth

The shield was still settling over Adrian.

He could feel it like a second skin—quiet, invisible, but deliberate. The kind of magic that didn't announce itself, just decided you were harder to notice now.

For the first time in a while, the sky didn't feel like it was staring back at him.

That alone should've been comforting.

It wasn't.

Because now the silence felt like waiting.

Adrian stood in the center hall of the estate, hands in his pockets, eyes moving between the people who had been lying to him his entire life without saying a word.

Elias stood across from him.

Rose was slightly behind.

Hannah leaned on a pillar like she was watching a drama she already knew the ending to.

Kael had wisely positioned himself further back.

The supernatural women—Lirael, Selene, Niamh—watched quietly, not interrupting.

Adrian broke the silence first.

"…So let me get this straight."

Elias didn't respond immediately.

Adrian continued.

"You didn't tell me anything because you were protecting me."

"Yes," Elias said.

Adrian nodded slowly. "…From what exactly? Skipping homework?"

That earned a faint glance from Hannah, but no one else reacted.

Elias didn't hesitate.

"From death."

Silence.

The word landed heavily.

Adrian exhaled through his nose.

"…Okay," he said quietly. "That's slightly more serious than I expected."

He stepped forward one pace.

"Try again," he said. "But this time, explain it like I'm not already pissed."

Rose's expression tightened slightly.

Elias spoke calmly.

"If you had awakened as a child," he said, "you would not have survived what noticed you."

Adrian frowned. "I survived now."

Elias shook his head once.

"Now you are incomplete," he said. "Unstable, but developing."

A pause.

Then—

"When you were younger, you would have been neither."

Silence again.

Kael muttered under his breath, "That's… actually fair."

Adrian ignored him.

Elias continued.

"There are entities that do not come one at a time."

Adrian's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…Yeah," he said slowly. "I've noticed that trend too."

Elias met his gaze.

"If you awaken early, they arrive early."

Rose finally spoke, voice softer.

"And no matter how strong you think you are…"

She hesitated.

Then finished.

"…you would not be able to protect yourself if they came together."

Adrian looked at her.

"…Together?"

Elias answered.

"Two at a time."

Silence.

That made the room feel smaller.

Adrian blinked once.

"…Only two?"

"Yes."

Adrian gave a short laugh.

"That sounds like a bad joke."

Elias didn't react.

"It is not."

Adrian shook his head slightly.

"So you're telling me," he said slowly, "the strongest man I know—who just turned gravity into a suggestion—can only handle two of these things if he goes all out."

Elias nodded once.

"Yes."

A pause.

Then Elias added—

"And survives."

That corrected everything.

Adrian's expression shifted slightly.

"…So winning wasn't even guaranteed," he said.

"No," Elias replied.

Rose's voice softened again.

"Your father could hold them off."

A pause.

"But not defeat them all."

Adrian looked at Elias again.

"…And you're the strongest human."

Elias didn't deny it.

Kael spoke quietly. "Rank Two."

Adrian nodded slowly.

"…And still not enough."

Elias met his gaze.

"I could escape Dracula if he comes for you personally with sacrificing something," he said.

That name hit differently.

Even Selene's expression tightened slightly.

Lirael didn't move.

Niamh stayed still.

Kael exhaled slowly.

Adrian frowned. "…Escape?"

"Yes."

A pause.

"Not win," Elias clarified.

Adrian nodded slowly.

"So your ceiling is 'don't die,'" he said.

Elias didn't respond.

Which was an answer.

Rose stepped slightly forward.

"And that is why we hid you," she said softly.

Adrian looked at her.

Her eyes weren't cold.

They were tired.

"…Because I would've been a liability," he said.

"No," Rose said immediately.

Her voice sharpened slightly.

"Because you would've been a target before you were ready."

Silence.

Hannah finally spoke, quieter than usual.

"People forget you exist until you're strong enough to matter," she said.

Adrian glanced at her.

That was the first time her tone didn't sound playful.

Elias continued.

"The moment you awaken," he said, "you are registered by the world."

Adrian exhaled slowly.

"…And I'm guessing 'registered' means 'hunted.'"

"Yes."

Silence again.

This time, Adrian didn't joke.

He just stood there for a moment, absorbing it.

Then he nodded.

"…Alright," he said quietly.

Elias watched him carefully. "You accept this easily."

Adrian shrugged slightly.

"I don't have a choice," he said.

A pause.

Then he added—

"But I do have questions."

Rose relaxed slightly. "Ask."

Adrian looked between them.

"…Did you ever plan for me to survive this world on my own?"

Silence.

No one answered immediately.

That was answer enough.

Elias finally spoke.

"We planned for you to survive long enough to choose."

Adrian nodded slowly.

"…Yeah," he said. "That sounds like you."

A pause.

Then he looked at his father.

"…And now I am choosing."

Elias's gaze sharpened slightly.

Adrian continued.

"I'm not staying hidden," he said calmly.

Silence.

Even Kael stiffened slightly.

Lirael's eyes narrowed.

Rose's expression changed.

Hannah just watched.

Elias didn't interrupt.

Adrian exhaled once.

"…Because if the world already noticed me," he said, "then hiding doesn't matter anymore."

A pause.

Then his eyes hardened slightly.

"So I might as well make sure it regrets noticing me first."

Silence.

Heavy.

Final.

Elias studied him for a long moment.

Then—

He nodded once.

"…Good," he said quietly.

Not approval.

Not pride.

Just recognition.

Because now it was clear—

Adrian wasn't being protected anymore.

He was stepping into the same world that made his father say "escape is survival."

And deciding he would aim higher than survival.
