Chapter 35 - The Truth Behind Rose Cole

The living room felt different now.

Not calmer—just more honest.

Everyone had taken seats, but nobody had truly relaxed. Elias sat like a man who never needed comfort. Kael leaned back with arms crossed, still observing. The three women stayed spaced out like they were ready for anything. Hannah, of course, looked like she was enjoying the tension.

Adrian sat forward.

This time, his gaze wasn't on monsters, ranks, or systems.

It was on his mother.

"…Mom," he said quietly.

Rose looked up immediately.

That single word already changed her expression.

Adrian leaned slightly forward.

"I know Dad's story now," he said. "Rank Two, hidden families, all that insane political-supernatural structure."

A pause.

Then his eyes softened just a little.

"But I don't know yours."

Silence.

Even Elias didn't interrupt.

Rose exhaled slowly.

"…You want the truth," she said.

Adrian nodded once. "Yeah."

No hesitation.

No sarcasm.

Just direct.

Rose looked down at her hands for a moment.

Then she spoke.

"My name is Rose Cole," she said softly.

Adrian blinked. "Yes. That part I know."

A faint, tired smile crossed her face.

"…I mean before that," she said.

The room went still.

Rose continued.

"I was born into a Viscount house," she said.

Lirael's eyes flickered slightly at that.

"But not as a recognized heir," Rose added.

Adrian frowned. "You were illegitimate."

Rose nodded once.

"Yes."

A pause.

"My father acknowledged me privately," she said. "But publicly, I didn't exist."

Hannah stopped leaning casually for once.

Kael's expression sharpened slightly.

Rose's voice stayed calm, but quieter now.

"My stepmother made sure of that," she said.

Adrian's jaw tightened slightly.

Rose continued.

"I wasn't allowed formal training," she said. "Not in noble etiquette. Not in combat. Not in bloodline arts."

A pause.

"I was meant to stay invisible."

Silence.

Adrian leaned back slightly. "…And then you met Dad."

Rose looked up at Elias for a brief second.

Something passed between them—something old.

Then she nodded.

"Yes."

Her voice softened slightly.

"I met him when I was sent out of my house for the first time," she said.

Kael frowned. "Sent out?"

Rose nodded.

"A controlled exile," she said. "To keep me from becoming a political liability."

Adrian exhaled slowly. "That's… messed up."

Rose gave a faint, almost tired smile.

"It is normal in noble families," she said.

Then she continued.

"I was weak back then," she said quietly.

Adrian's eyes narrowed slightly. "…You don't seem weak now."

Rose looked at him.

"That is because of him," she said.

She tilted her head slightly toward Elias.

Elias didn't react.

Rose continued.

"When I met Elias," she said, "he was already… different."

Adrian frowned. "Different how?"

Rose thought for a moment.

"…Controlled," she said. "Not emotionally. Not socially. But in presence."

Kael muttered quietly. "That tracks."

Rose nodded slightly.

"He didn't look like someone from any faction," she said. "He looked like someone all factions were avoiding noticing."

Adrian glanced at his father.

Elias remained silent.

Rose continued.

"He helped me survive my first exposure to the supernatural world," she said.

Adrian blinked. "…Your first exposure?"

Rose nodded.

"I was attacked," she said simply.

The room tightened again.

Rose didn't dramatize it.

She didn't need to.

"I should have died," she said.

A pause.

"But Elias intervened."

Adrian looked at his father again.

"…And that's it?" he asked. "You just met, he saved you, and that was the start of everything?"

Rose shook her head slightly.

"No," she said softly.

"That was the start of his problem."

Silence.

Even Hannah tilted her head slightly at that.

Rose continued.

"I wasn't strong," she said. "But I was… noticeable."

Adrian frowned. "Noticeable how?"

Rose exhaled slowly.

"My bloodline reacted strangely to supernatural presence," she said. "Not strong. Not noble. But compatible."

Lirael's eyes narrowed slightly.

Selene stayed silent.

Niamh watched carefully.

Rose continued.

"That made me a target," she said.

A pause.

"And Elias… became my shield."

Adrian leaned forward slightly.

"…He just decided that?"

Rose nodded.

"Yes."

A faint smile crossed her lips.

"He never asked for permission from the world," she said.

Adrian glanced at Elias.

Elias still said nothing.

Rose's voice softened again.

"And over time," she said, "I stopped being someone he was protecting…"

She paused.

"…and became someone he stayed with."

Silence.

Adrian leaned back slowly.

"…So you're saying Dad basically picked you up from being doomed and refused to put you down."

Rose gave a small, honest nod.

"Yes."

Hannah muttered, "That's kind of romantic in a terrifying way."

Kael added quietly, "That's Elias Cole in a sentence."

Adrian stared at his mother for a moment longer.

Then his expression softened slightly.

"…And you were okay with that?" he asked.

Rose looked at him.

Then smiled faintly.

"No," she said.

"I just didn't want to die."

A pause.

Then softer—

"And eventually… I didn't want to leave."

Silence settled again.

Not heavy this time.

Just real.

Adrian exhaled slowly.

"…Alright," he said quietly.

Then he leaned back.

"I think I understand you a little better now."

Rose nodded once.

"That is enough for today," she said softly.

But Elias finally spoke again.

"No."

Everyone turned slightly.

Elias looked at Adrian.

"There is one more thing you need to understand."

Adrian frowned. "…Of course there is."

Elias's voice stayed calm.

"Your mother was never just a victim."

A pause.

"She is the reason certain factions stopped pursuing me directly for years."

Rose didn't deny it.

Adrian blinked slowly.

"…Mom," he said quietly. "What did you do?"

Rose looked away slightly.

"…I made myself valuable enough to be left alone," she said.

Silence.

And for the first time—

Adrian realized something important.

His family wasn't just strong.

They were strategic history.

And he was standing in the middle of everything they had been hiding from the world.
