Adrian stepped forward, the air changed.
Not violently.
Not like before.
Subtly like reality noticed he wasn't following the script anymore.
Kael felt it first.
"…That's not normal," he muttered.
Adrian didn't look back. "Good or bad?"
"Both," Kael replied.
Behind them, Lirael, Selene, and Niamh shifted slightly, their attention locking onto the same direction.
Something was coming.
But not rushing.
Not chaotic.
Organized.
That was worse.
Adrian exhaled slowly.
"…How many this time?" he asked.
Selene's eyes narrowed slightly. "More than before."
Lirael added, "But controlled."
Niamh's voice softened. "They are learning your pattern."
Adrian tilted his head slightly. "I don't have a pattern."
Kael gave him a look. "You absolutely do."
Adrian ignored him.
The field ahead rippled.
Not visually at first more like space itself forgot how to sit still.
Then figures emerged.
Not like monsters bursting through reality.
More like they were already standing there and had just become visible.
Five.
Then ten.
Then more behind them.
Adrian stopped walking.
"…Okay," he said quietly. "That's new."
The front figure stepped forward.
Human-shaped.
But not human in presence.
Its body carried a strange duality like it existed in two laws at once. One foot in reality. One foot somewhere else.
Selene's voice dropped. "Witchbound."
Lirael's eyes sharpened. "No. That's a contracted hybrid."
Niamh corrected softly. "Fae-marked."
Kael frowned. "All three?"
The figure smiled faintly.
"I am what survives between classifications," it said.
Adrian sighed. "…I hate that sentence already."
The figure tilted its head.
"You are the Anchor."
Adrian crossed his arms. "I'm starting to think I need a nickname."
"No," Kael said immediately.
The figure continued.
"You distort convergence fields simply by existing."
Adrian raised an eyebrow. "That sounds like a you problem."
A pause.
Then the figure lifted a hand.
The space around it tightened.
Not attacking.
Measuring.
Behind it, the others stayed still.
Watching.
Learning.
Adrian felt it.
The pressure shift.
Not on him.
Around him.
Testing his response.
Kael whispered, "They're probing the field."
Adrian didn't move.
"…And if I fail the test?" he asked quietly.
Selene answered. "They will escalate."
Lirael added, "Until something breaks."
Niamh said softly, "Or until you do."
Adrian exhaled.
"…Cool system," he muttered.
The figure spoke again.
"We will stabilize you."
Adrian frowned. "I don't need stabilizing."
"You are unstable," it replied calmly.
Adrian looked at Kael. "Everyone keeps saying that like it's obvious."
Kael shrugged. "It is."
Adrian sighed.
Then
He stepped forward.
Just one step.
The entire field reacted.
Not explosively.
Instantly.
The air tightened.
The space between the figures and Adrian compressed slightly—like something refused to let distance behave normally.
The probing stopped.
The Witchbound figure's expression shifted.
"…Interesting," it said.
Adrian tilted his head. "Yeah. I get that a lot."
Behind him, Selene's shadows flickered slightly.
Lirael's eyes narrowed.
Niamh's calm expression sharpened.
Kael muttered, "…You did it again."
Adrian frowned. "Did what?"
"You bent the field without meaning to."
Adrian looked down at the ground. "I didn't do anything."
"That's the problem," Kael said.
The Witchbound figure raised its hand again.
This time, more carefully.
The space responded—but differently.
Instead of tightening
It hesitated.
Like it wasn't sure which law to obey.
Adrian felt it too.
"…Okay," he said quietly. "That's definitely new."
Selene spoke softly. "You are no longer just inside the field."
Lirael added, "The field is inside your awareness."
Niamh's voice lowered. "And it is starting to hesitate around your presence."
Kael looked at Adrian. "That's not supposed to happen yet."
Adrian shrugged slightly. "Well, it is."
A pause.
Then the Witchbound figure spoke again.
"You are learning control faster than predicted."
Adrian nodded. "I'm a fast learner when things are trying to kill me."
Silence.
The figures behind it shifted slightly.
Not attacking.
Communicating.
The Witchbound lowered its hand.
"…We will return with higher calibration," it said.
Adrian blinked. "Wait what?"
Kael's expression tightened. "They're retreating."
Adrian frowned. "That's it?"
Selene answered quietly. "They are not defeated."
Lirael added, "They are adjusting."
Niamh said softly, "You are being classified again."
Adrian watched as the figures began to fade not running, not panicking, just… stepping out of alignment with reality.
Like exiting a system.
Within seconds, they were gone.
The field loosened.
The pressure eased.
Silence returned.
Adrian stood still for a moment.
Then exhaled.
"…So I didn't lose," he said.
Kael looked at him. "You didn't win either."
Adrian nodded slowly. "I noticed."
He looked at his hand again.
"…They tested me," he said quietly.
Selene nodded. "Yes."
"And I didn't break."
Lirael added, "No."
Niamh smiled faintly. "You bent them instead."
Adrian exhaled through his nose.
"…That sounds dangerous."
Kael gave a dry look. "That's because it is."
A pause.
Then—
From behind them, the estate lights flickered once.
Not broken.
Not failing.
Reacting.
Adrian turned slightly.
"…What now?" he asked.
Kael stared at the estate for a moment.
Then said quietly—
"Now someone stronger noticed."
Silence.
Adrian didn't speak immediately.
Then he nodded once.
"…Of course they did."
And for the first time
He didn't feel surprised.
He felt ready.
