Chapter 6 - The Man Behind The Game

The gunshot still echoed in Elena's ears.

Everything had happened too fast.

One second, she was surrounded—trapped, helpless, about to lose everything again.

The next—

Adrian stood there like death itself had answered her fear.

Gun steady. Eyes cold. Presence overwhelming.

"Step away from my wife."

The words replayed in her mind.

My wife.

It sounded possessive. Dangerous.

And for the first time since she met him…

Elena wasn't sure if those words were meant to protect her—

Or warn her.

The men froze.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

The tension in the room became suffocating.

Then one of them laughed.

A low, mocking sound.

"You're late, Blackwood," he said, raising his hands slightly—but not in surrender. More like amusement. "We were starting to think you changed your mind."

Adrian didn't blink.

Didn't lower the gun.

"Did I?" he replied calmly.

His voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

The kind of quiet that came before something terrible.

Elena's heart pounded as she looked between them.

"What is going on?" she demanded, her voice breaking through the silence. "You said— You said you would save him!"

Adrian didn't answer her.

Not yet.

His eyes stayed locked on the men.

Calculating.

Cold.

"Untie him," Adrian said.

It wasn't a request.

The man smirked. "Or what?"

A beat.

Then—

Another gunshot.

This time, it wasn't a warning.

The bullet hit the wall just inches from the man's head.

Close enough to make him flinch.

Close enough to prove a point.

Elena gasped.

Her hands flew to her mouth.

Adrian didn't move.

Didn't react.

"Next one won't miss," he said.

Silence fell again.

He meant it.

Everyone in that room knew he meant it.

The smirk slowly disappeared from the man's face.

"Fine," he muttered, nodding to the others.

Within seconds, Elena's father was untied.

He slumped forward weakly, barely conscious.

"Dad!" Elena rushed to him again, catching him before he fell. "It's okay… it's okay, I've got you…"

Her voice shook.

Her hands trembled.

But she held on.

She wasn't letting go again.

Not now.

Not after everything.

"Take him outside," Adrian ordered, still not lowering the gun.

Two of his men—when had they even entered?—appeared instantly and moved forward.

Elena stiffened. "No—wait—where are you taking him?"

"To safety," Adrian said.

"Where?" she pressed.

This time, he looked at her.

And for a moment—

Something flickered in his eyes.

Something unreadable.

"Somewhere they can't reach him," he replied.

Her chest tightened.

She wanted to believe him.

She needed to believe him.

But after everything that had happened tonight…

Trust didn't come easily anymore.

Still—

She slowly let go.

Her father was carried out.

Alive.

Breathing.

Safe… for now.

The moment he disappeared through the door—

Elena turned back to Adrian.

And this time—

She didn't hold back.

"What did they mean?" she demanded, her voice sharp. "About you trading me? About a deal?"

The room fell quiet again.

The men still stood there.

Watching.

Waiting.

Adrian lowered the gun slightly.

But his expression didn't soften.

"They talk too much," he said.

"That's not an answer!" Elena snapped.

Her chest rose and fell rapidly.

"I deserve the truth!"

Her voice echoed.

For the first time—

She wasn't afraid of him.

She was angry.

Hurt.

And done being controlled.

Adrian studied her.

Longer this time.

As if reassessing something.

Then—

He stepped closer.

The air shifted instantly.

"You want the truth?" he asked quietly.

Her heart pounded.

"Yes."

A pause.

Then—

"They weren't lying."

The words hit like a physical blow.

Elena froze.

Her world tilted again.

"What…?" she whispered.

Adrian's gaze didn't waver.

"I made a deal," he said. "But not the one they think."

Her breath caught.

"Explain," she said, her voice barely holding together.

His jaw tightened slightly.

"They took your father because of something he had," Adrian said. "Something valuable."

"What?" she asked quickly.

Another pause.

Then—

"Information."

The word felt heavy.

Dangerous.

Elena frowned. "What kind of information?"

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

And that hesitation—

That tiny delay—

Made her stomach drop.

"What are you not telling me?" she asked.

His eyes darkened slightly.

"More than you're ready to hear."

Her hands clenched into fists.

"Try me."

Silence.

Then—

"They didn't want you at first," Adrian said slowly. "They wanted leverage."

Elena's breath hitched.

"Your father refused to give them what they wanted," he continued. "So they found another way."

A chill ran down her spine.

"Me…" she whispered.

"Yes."

Her heart pounded violently.

"But you said—" she started, then stopped.

Everything clicked.

All at once.

The urgency.

The marriage.

The timing.

"You didn't save me," she said slowly, her voice shaking. "You used me."

Adrian didn't deny it.

Didn't even try.

"I gave you a way out," he said.

"A way into this!" she snapped. "You dragged me into something I don't understand!"

His expression hardened slightly.

"You were already in it," he said.

The words cut deep.

Elena shook her head. "No… no, I wasn't—"

"You were," he interrupted. "You just didn't know it."

Silence.

Heavy.

Suffocating.

Her mind raced.

"What does my father know?" she asked quietly.

Adrian held her gaze.

Then—

"He knows who you really are."

Everything stopped.

Elena blinked.

Her heart skipped.

"What… does that mean?" she whispered.

Adrian stepped even closer now.

Close enough that his voice dropped.

Close enough that no one else could hear.

"It means," he said, "you were never just Elena Voss."

Her breath caught.

The room felt like it was closing in.

"What are you saying…?"

His eyes locked onto hers.

Sharp.

Unforgiving.

"Your name," he said slowly, "is Elena Laurent."

The world shattered.

Her chest tightened.

Her mind went blank.

No.

That wasn't possible.

"That's not—" she started.

"It is," he said.

Her pulse roared in her ears.

"No… no, that's not my name," she said, shaking her head. "You're lying."

"Am I?"

Her breathing became uneven.

Fast.

Panicked.

"Your father didn't just disappear," Adrian continued. "He was hiding you."

"Hiding me from what?" she asked, her voice breaking.

His expression didn't change.

"From the people who killed your mother."

Silence.

Complete.

Devastating.

Elena's knees nearly gave out.

Her mother…

Killed?

No.

That wasn't what she was told.

That wasn't the story she grew up with.

That wasn't—

"You're lying…" she whispered again, but this time…

There was no strength behind it.

Only fear.

Only doubt.

Adrian watched her carefully.

"You wanted the truth," he said.

Her vision blurred.

Everything she knew…

Everything she believed…

It was all falling apart.

Again.

And this time—

It was worse.

Because this wasn't just betrayal.

This was her life.

Her identity.

Her past.

A lie.

Elena looked at him, her chest rising and falling rapidly.

"Who am I…?" she asked, her voice barely there.

Adrian didn't hesitate.

"You're the one they've been looking for."

Her heart stopped.

And in that moment—

Elena realized something far more terrifying than anything else that had happened tonight.

This wasn't about marriage.

This wasn't about revenge.

This wasn't even about her father.

She was the target.

And whatever secret she carried…

Was worth killing for.

To be continued…
