Chapter 11 - The Truth That Cuts Deeper Than Lies

The silence inside the car was unbearable.

Elena couldn't hear anything except her own heartbeat—

Loud. Violent. Unsteady.

"I was part of it."

Adrian's voice echoed in her mind like a sentence she couldn't escape.

Her fingers trembled.

Her chest hurt.

Everything hurt.

"You… were there…" she whispered, her voice barely holding together.

Adrian didn't move.

Didn't look away.

"Yes."

The confirmation shattered whatever fragile hope she had left.

Mara finally spoke, her voice low. "Elena… you need to listen carefully—"

"Don't," Elena snapped.

Her voice cracked.

"Don't say anything."

Because if Mara spoke—

If she tried to explain—

It would make it real.

And Elena wasn't ready for that.

Not yet.

She slowly turned back to Adrian.

Her eyes glistened with unshed tears.

"Why?" she asked.

Just one word.

But it carried everything.

Pain.

Confusion.

Anger.

Adrian's jaw tightened slightly.

"It wasn't supposed to happen like that."

Her breath hitched.

"That's your answer?" she said, disbelief creeping into her voice. "That's what you have to say?"

"No," he said quietly.

A pause.

Then—

"It was a job."

The words hit harder than anything else.

A job.

Her mother's death—

Reduced to something so cold.

So meaningless.

Elena let out a broken laugh.

"A job…" she repeated.

Her vision blurred.

"You stood there while she died… and it was just a job to you?"

Adrian's expression didn't change.

But his voice—

Dropped slightly.

"No."

Her heart skipped.

"It stopped being a job the moment I saw you."

Silence.

Elena froze.

Her breath caught.

"What…?" she whispered.

Adrian's gaze didn't waver.

"You weren't supposed to be there," he said. "You weren't supposed to see any of it."

Her mind went blank.

A memory flickered—

Dark.

Broken.

Incomplete.

A woman screaming.

A man shouting.

A door slamming.

And a shadow—

Standing in the corner.

Watching.

Her body stiffened.

"That was you…" she whispered.

Adrian didn't deny it.

Her heart shattered all over again.

"You saw me," he said. "And I saw you."

Her breathing became uneven.

"And you still let it happen?" she asked.

Her voice trembled with anger now.

With hurt.

With something deeper.

Adrian's eyes darkened slightly.

"I wasn't the one in control."

"That doesn't matter!" she shouted. "You were there!"

Silence.

The weight of it crushed the air.

Elena's hands clenched into fists.

"You could've stopped it," she said, her voice breaking. "You could've done something!"

A long pause.

Then—

"I did."

The words made her freeze.

"What…?"

Adrian's gaze sharpened.

"I kept you alive."

Silence.

Total.

Devastating.

Elena stared at him.

Her mind struggling to process.

"That's why you don't remember," he continued. "I made sure of it."

Her heart skipped violently.

"You… erased my memory?" she asked, disbelief flooding her voice.

"No," he said. "I made sure someone else did."

Her stomach dropped.

Everything felt twisted.

Wrong.

"You don't get to decide that!" she snapped. "You don't get to control my life like that!"

"I didn't control it," he said coldly.

A pause.

"I saved it."

Her chest tightened painfully.

"By destroying everything else?" she shot back.

Silence.

Mara shifted slightly in the driver's seat.

"This is pointless," she muttered. "We don't have time for this."

But neither of them listened.

They were locked in something deeper now.

Something neither of them could walk away from.

"You don't get to call this saving me," Elena said quietly.

Her voice was different now.

Less emotional.

More dangerous.

"Because of you… I grew up thinking my mother abandoned me."

The words cut deep.

"And now you're telling me she was murdered… and you were there?"

Her eyes filled with tears again.

But this time—

She didn't look weak.

She looked furious.

Adrian didn't respond immediately.

And that silence—

That hesitation—

Hurt more than anything.

"Say something," she demanded.

His voice came out low.

"I can't change what happened."

"No," she said.

A tear slid down her cheek.

"But you could've told me."

Silence.

That was his answer.

Her chest tightened painfully.

"Why didn't you?" she whispered.

Adrian's eyes flickered.

Just for a second.

Then—

"Because the moment you know everything…"

A pause.

His gaze hardened.

"You become a target."

Elena laughed bitterly.

"A target?" she repeated. "Look around, Adrian. I already am."

Silence.

She wasn't wrong.

Gunshots.

Explosions.

Running for her life.

This wasn't protection.

This was war.

"And you brought me into it," she said.

Adrian didn't deny it.

"I brought you into it," he said, "because you were already in it."

Her heart pounded again.

That line again.

The same one.

But this time—

It felt different.

"What aren't you telling me?" she asked quietly.

Adrian looked at her.

Really looked at her.

And for the first time—

There was something else in his eyes.

Something she couldn't quite name.

"Your mother wasn't just killed," he said.

Elena's breath caught.

Mara tensed slightly.

"What does that mean?" Elena asked.

Adrian's voice dropped.

"She was betrayed."

The word hit like a shockwave.

"By who?" Elena whispered.

Silence.

Then—

Adrian's gaze shifted briefly.

To Mara.

Elena's heart stopped.

Slowly—

She turned.

Mara's grip on the steering wheel tightened.

Her expression changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

"No…" Elena whispered.

The realization hit her like a crash.

"No… that's not possible…"

Mara didn't speak.

Didn't deny it.

Didn't defend herself.

And that—

That was worse.

"You…" Elena's voice shook violently. "You knew her…"

Mara closed her eyes for a brief moment.

Then opened them again.

And this time—

There was no hiding it.

"Yes."

The world shattered.

Again.

And this time—

There was nothing left to hold onto.

Elena's heart broke completely.

Because now—

It wasn't just Adrian.

It wasn't just the past.

It wasn't just lies.

It was everyone.

Everyone around her—

Had a part in destroying her life.

And she was only just beginning to understand it.
