Chapter 8 - The Explosion That Changed Everything

The explosion didn't just shake the building—

It tore through it.

The walls trembled violently, dust and debris raining down from the ceiling as the lights flickered once… twice…

Then died completely.

Darkness swallowed everything.

Elena screamed.

The sound ripped out of her before she could stop it, raw and terrified as the ground beneath her feet shifted.

"Adrian—!"

Before she could take another step—

A strong arm wrapped around her waist and pulled her back.

Hard.

"Stay down!" Adrian's voice cut through the chaos, sharp and commanding.

Another explosion followed.

Closer this time.

The impact slammed into the walls, sending something crashing behind them.

Elena's ears rang.

Her heart pounded wildly as she clung to Adrian instinctively, her fingers gripping his shirt like it was the only thing keeping her alive.

"What's happening?!" she cried.

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

His grip tightened around her as he pulled her lower, shielding her body with his own.

"They found us," he said.

Her blood ran cold.

Found.

Already?

"How—?!" she started, but her voice broke.

Another loud crash echoed from somewhere down the hall.

Footsteps.

Fast.

Heavy.

Not theirs.

Adrian's body tensed.

"Listen to me," he said quickly, his voice dropping low but urgent. "Whatever happens, don't let go of me."

Her heart skipped.

"What do you mean 'whatever happens'—?"

"No questions," he cut in. "Just trust me."

Trust.

The word hit differently now.

But she nodded anyway.

Because right now—

She had no other choice.

A beam of light suddenly cut through the darkness.

Flashlights.

Multiple.

Voices followed.

"Search the building!" someone shouted. "He's still inside!"

Elena's breath caught in her throat.

They were here.

Already inside.

Adrian moved.

Fast.

He grabbed her hand and pulled her toward the back of the room, his movements precise—like he had already planned for this.

"Where are we going?" she whispered.

"Out."

"That's not helpful—"

"Quiet."

His grip tightened slightly.

She fell silent.

They reached a hidden door Elena hadn't even noticed before.

Adrian pushed it open.

A narrow passage revealed itself.

Dark.

Confined.

Terrifying.

"Move," he said.

She didn't hesitate this time.

They stepped inside just as voices echoed closer.

The door shut behind them with a soft click.

And suddenly—

Everything went silent again.

Too silent.

Elena's breathing sounded too loud in the small space.

Too fast.

Too uneven.

"Keep going," Adrian whispered.

They moved through the narrow passage, her shoulder brushing against the cold wall as they walked.

Each step felt endless.

Each second stretched painfully.

Then—

A loud bang echoed from behind them.

They had found the room.

Elena's heart jumped into her throat.

"They're going to find us," she whispered.

Adrian didn't slow down.

"Not if we don't stop."

His voice was calm.

Controlled.

Like this was just another situation he had expected.

"How did they find us?" she asked, her voice trembling.

A pause.

Then—

"They didn't."

She blinked.

"What?"

Adrian stopped suddenly.

Elena nearly ran into him.

"They were already here," he said.

Her stomach dropped.

"What do you mean…?"

He turned to face her.

Even in the darkness, she could feel his gaze.

Sharp.

Focused.

"This wasn't an attack," he said quietly.

"It was a setup."

Her breath caught.

A setup?

"For who?" she asked.

A beat.

Then—

"For you."

The words hit like ice in her veins.

"No…" she whispered, shaking her head. "That doesn't make sense."

"It does," Adrian said. "You showed yourself tonight."

Her mind raced.

The ballroom.

The public humiliation.

The people.

"They saw me…" she whispered.

"Yes."

Her chest tightened.

"But I didn't do anything—"

"You existed," he said.

Silence.

That was enough.

Elena's heart pounded violently.

"So all of this… everything that's happening…" she said slowly.

"Started the moment you walked into that room," Adrian finished.

Her breath became uneven again.

She felt exposed.

Targeted.

Like every step she had taken tonight had led her here.

To this.

To him.

"We need to move," Adrian said suddenly.

Distant footsteps echoed again.

Closer this time.

They had found the passage.

Elena's pulse spiked.

"They're coming—"

"I know."

He grabbed her hand again.

They ran.

The passage twisted, turning sharply before opening into another space.

A metal door.

Adrian pushed it open.

Cold air rushed in.

They were outside.

But it wasn't safe.

Not yet.

Gunshots rang out behind them.

Elena flinched.

"Run!" Adrian said.

They moved across the open space quickly, heading toward another vehicle parked in the distance.

But halfway there—

Adrian stopped.

Suddenly.

Abruptly.

Elena's heart skipped.

"What—?"

Before she could finish—

A red dot appeared on his chest.

Her blood froze.

Sniper.

"Don't move," Adrian said quietly.

Her entire body went still.

Another red dot appeared.

This time—

On her.

Her breath caught.

"No…" she whispered.

They were exposed.

Completely.

Trapped in the open.

Her heart pounded so loud she could barely hear anything else.

Adrian's grip on her hand tightened.

"Listen to me," he said.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"If I tell you to run… you run. Don't look back."

Her eyes widened.

"No—"

"Elena."

The way he said her name—

Firm.

Final.

Terrified her.

"I'm not leaving you," she said, shaking her head.

"You don't have a choice."

"I do!"

Another gunshot rang out.

Closer.

The ground near them cracked.

Time was running out.

Adrian's eyes locked onto hers.

For a brief moment—

Something changed.

Something softer.

Something… human.

"Stay alive," he said quietly.

Her chest tightened painfully.

"Adrian—"

"Run."

Another shot.

And this time—

He pushed her.

Hard.

Elena stumbled forward, her heart shattering as she turned—

"Adrian!"

But he didn't move.

Didn't follow.

He stood there—

Facing the danger.

Facing the guns.

Alone.

Her mind screamed at her to go back.

To help him.

To not leave him.

But her body—

Her body moved.

Running.

Faster than she ever had before.

Tears blurred her vision as gunshots echoed behind her.

Each one felt like it was hitting her instead.

She didn't stop.

She couldn't.

Not until—

A hand grabbed her.

From nowhere.

From behind.

Elena screamed, struggling instantly.

"Let me go—!"

"Stop!"

The voice was unfamiliar.

Desperate.

Urgent.

Not one of Adrian's.

Her heart dropped.

She turned—

And froze.

A woman stood in front of her.

Breathing hard.

Eyes wide.

"You don't have time," the woman said quickly. "If you want to live… come with me."

Elena's mind spun.

"Who are you?" she demanded.

The woman hesitated.

Just for a second.

Then—

"I'm the one who's been trying to find you."

Silence.

Everything stopped.

Elena's heart pounded violently.

"What…?"

The woman stepped closer.

Her voice dropped.

"You're not safe with him."

The words hit harder than anything else.

Elena's breath caught.

"What do you mean…?"

The woman's eyes flickered toward the direction of the gunshots.

Then back to her.

"Adrian Blackwood isn't protecting you," she said.

A pause.

Then—

"He's part of the reason they want you dead."

The world shattered.

Again.

And this time—

Elena didn't know who to believe anymore.
