Chapter 5 - The Truth He Shouldn’t Have Shown Me

The car hadn't been on the road for more than ten minutes when Elena realized something was wrong.

Very wrong.

They weren't heading back to Adrian's mansion.

She had been there long enough to recognize the route—the long stretch of private road, the quiet surroundings, the controlled silence.

But this—

This road was different.

Rough.

Isolated.

Her fingers curled slightly on her lap as her eyes moved to the window. The city had disappeared. Streetlights grew fewer. Buildings turned into empty land.

Her heartbeat quickened.

"Where are we going?" she asked, her voice calm… but not steady.

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

He was seated beside her, as usual—composed, unreadable, like nothing in the world could shake him.

Then, finally—

"You wanted proof," he said.

Her breath caught.

Proof.

Her stomach tightened.

"You said my father would be safe after the marriage," she replied, her voice sharper now. "We're already married."

Adrian turned his head slightly, his eyes locking onto hers.

"And I keep my word."

Something about the way he said it made her chest tighten instead of relax.

The car slowed.

Then stopped.

Elena's heart slammed against her ribs.

They were in the middle of nowhere.

No houses. No people.

Just an old building standing alone like it had been forgotten by the world.

Her throat went dry.

"What is this place…?" she whispered.

Adrian opened the door.

"Come," he said.

No explanation.

No reassurance.

Just that one word.

Elena hesitated.

Every instinct inside her screamed to stay in the car.

But then—

Her father.

Slowly, she stepped out.

The air felt colder here. Heavier. Like something terrible had happened… or was about to.

Adrian walked ahead without looking back.

Again.

Like he knew she would follow.

And again—

She did.

Inside, the building was dimly lit.

The smell hit her first.

Damp.

Metal.

Something… unsettling.

Her steps slowed.

"This doesn't feel right," she said quietly.

Adrian didn't stop.

"Stay close," he said.

Not comforting.

Not gentle.

But somehow—

More terrifying.

They walked down a narrow hallway.

Each step echoed.

Each second stretched longer than the last.

Then—

A sound.

A faint groan.

Elena froze.

Her heart stopped.

"No…" she whispered, her voice breaking as she turned toward the source of the sound.

"Dad…?"

She ran.

Before Adrian could stop her.

Before she could think.

She pushed open the half-closed door—

And everything inside her shattered.

A man sat tied to a chair.

Bruised.

Bleeding.

Barely conscious.

But it was him.

It was really him.

"Dad!" Elena rushed forward, dropping to her knees in front of him. Her hands trembled as she reached for his face. "Dad, I'm here… I'm here…"

His eyes fluttered open slowly.

Confused.

Weak.

"El… Elena…?" his voice was barely there.

Tears streamed down her face instantly. "Yes, it's me! I'm here, I'm here—"

"I thought… you were safe…" he whispered.

Safe?

Her chest tightened painfully. "What happened to you? Who did this?"

Before he could answer—

Footsteps echoed behind her.

Heavy.

Unfamiliar.

Elena turned sharply.

Three men stood at the doorway.

Not Adrian's men.

Different.

Rough.

Dangerous.

Her heart dropped.

"Adrian…" she said quickly, standing up and moving slightly in front of her father.

But when she turned—

Adrian wasn't there.

Her blood ran cold.

He was gone.

"Looking for someone?" one of the men said with a smirk.

Panic surged through her.

"Where is he?" she demanded, her voice shaking despite her effort to sound strong.

The man chuckled.

"Gone."

Gone?

Her mind went blank.

No.

No, that didn't make sense.

He brought her here.

He said—

Her breath caught.

A terrifying thought crept into her mind.

"What do you want?" she asked, backing up slightly.

The man stepped closer.

"We want what your husband promised."

Husband.

The word hit differently now.

Dangerously.

"What are you talking about?" she asked.

The man's smile faded.

"Don't play dumb," he said coldly. "Adrian Blackwood made a deal."

Her heart pounded violently.

"A deal…?" she repeated.

"Yes," another man spoke, crossing his arms. "You… for him."

Silence.

The world stopped.

Elena stared at them, her mind struggling to process the words.

"What…?" she whispered.

The first man tilted his head slightly.

"He traded you," he said simply.

Her chest tightened so painfully she could barely breathe.

"No," she said, shaking her head. "That's not true."

But the doubt—

The doubt was already there.

"He married you just to hand you over," the man continued. "Smart move, honestly. You're worth more than we expected."

Her hands trembled.

This couldn't be happening.

Not again.

Not another betrayal.

Not from him too.

Her thoughts raced.

The contract.

The urgency.

The way he avoided answers.

The way he said—

You'll get what you deserve.

Her stomach dropped.

"Liar…" she whispered.

But even she didn't believe it.

The man stepped closer again.

"You should've asked more questions, Mrs. Blackwood."

Her heart pounded wildly.

Her father groaned behind her.

"Elena… run…" he whispered weakly.

Run?

There was nowhere to run.

Not here.

Not now.

The men moved closer.

Closing in.

Trapping her.

Her pulse roared in her ears.

Think.

Think.

Think.

And then—

A sound.

Sharp.

Loud.

Gunfire.

Everything froze.

The men turned instantly.

Before anyone could react—

The door behind them burst open.

And there he was.

Adrian Blackwood.

Gun in hand.

Eyes cold.

Dangerous.

Alive.

"Step away from my wife," he said quietly.

The room fell into silence.

Deadly silence.

Elena's breath caught.

Relief flooded her chest—

But it didn't erase the fear.

Because now—

She didn't know which was worse.

The men in front of her…

Or the man she had just married.

Adrian's gaze flicked to her briefly.

Just for a second.

And in that second—

She saw something she hadn't seen before.

Not coldness.

Not control.

But something darker.

Something ruthless.

The kind of man who didn't just play the game—

He owned it.

And suddenly—

Elena realized the truth.

She hadn't been betrayed.

Not exactly.

She had been used.

Placed.

Moved like a piece in a game she didn't understand.

And Adrian Blackwood—

Was the one controlling the board.
