Chapter 16 - Absence of Guidance

The pattern became clear by the third rotation.

Other squads received instruction.

Tiger did not.

Eagle moved through a timing drill. One of the instructors stepped in twice within a minute. Small corrections. Exact adjustments. Immediate feedback.

Viper received sharper direction. Short commands. Clear changes. Fast improvement.

Elephant was guided through positioning. Rhino through pressure control.

Tiger stood in place.

Jin-Sensei watched.

That was all.

"Distance control," Sensei Hodge said.

The drill changed.

Short exchanges. Measured steps. Entry and exit.

Mateo moved first.

Clean.

Controlled.

Luna followed.

Balanced.

Kai stepped in.

Late.

His distance collapsed too quickly.

He stepped too far.

Too close.

The structure broke.

"Stop," Jin-Sensei said.

Kai froze.

Jin-Sensei stepped forward.

He adjusted Kai once.

Moved his front foot back.

Shifted his weight.

Lowered his center.

"Maintain this."

Then he stepped away.

No explanation.

No breakdown.

No repetition.

Kai held the position.

It felt more stable.

But unfamiliar.

He waited.

For more.

Nothing came.

"Continue."

They resumed.

Mateo moved.

Correct.

Luna matched.

Controlled.

Kai stepped.

The position slipped.

His distance collapsed again.

The drill broke.

Jin-Sensei said nothing.

Kai frowned.

He reset.

Tried again.

Same result.

He looked at Jin-Sensei.

Waiting.

No response.

Across the mat, another instructor corrected a Viper student again.

Detailed.

Specific.

Repeated.

Kai saw the difference.

They were being taught.

Tiger was not.

Kai stepped back.

Frustration rising.

"You're not going to explain that?" he said.

Jin-Sensei looked at him.

"You were shown."

Kai shook his head.

"Once."

"That is sufficient."

Kai exhaled sharply.

"It's not."

Jin-Sensei did not respond.

He returned to observing.

Kai looked away.

Irritation building.

This was not training.

This was being left to figure things out alone.

He stepped forward again.

Tried to replicate the correction.

He forgot the exact positioning.

His stance slipped.

His distance broke.

Again.

He stopped.

Frustrated.

"This doesn't make sense."

Mateo spoke without looking at him.

"It does."

Kai turned.

"Then explain it."

Mateo shook his head slightly.

"No."

Kai stepped closer.

"Why not?"

"Because you should already be figuring it out."

Kai frowned.

"That's not how this works."

Mateo finally looked at him.

"That is exactly how this works."

Kai's irritation pushed forward.

"We're not getting the same instruction as the others."

Mateo's expression did not change.

"We don't need it."

Kai stared at him.

"I do."

Mateo held his gaze.

"Then you're behind."

The words landed.

Direct.

Kai clenched his jaw.

"This is supposed to be training."

"It is," Mateo said.

Kai gestured toward the other squads.

"They're being coached."

Mateo glanced briefly across the mat.

Then back.

"They're being refined."

A pause.

"We're being tested."

Kai paused.

That shifted something.

Slightly.

But not enough.

"It feels like we're being ignored."

Mateo shook his head.

"It means we're expected to function without help."

Kai frowned.

"That's the same thing."

"No," Mateo said. "It isn't."

Kai did not respond immediately.

He looked at Luna.

She had been silent.

Watching.

She spoke calmly.

"This is deliberate."

Kai looked at her.

"What is?"

"The lack of instruction."

Kai exhaled.

"That doesn't help."

"It isn't meant to help," Luna said.

"It's meant to reveal."

Kai frowned.

"Reveal what?"

"Who can adjust without guidance."

Kai paused.

That made sense.

He did not like it.

But it made sense.

Mateo nodded once.

"Exactly."

Kai looked between them.

"So we're just supposed to figure everything out?"

Luna answered.

"Yes."

Simple.

Clear.

Kai looked at Jin-Sensei.

Still watching.

Still silent.

No corrections.

No encouragement.

No explanation.

Just observation.

Kai stepped forward again.

Reset his stance.

Tried to apply the earlier adjustment.

Slower.

More deliberate.

He held it longer this time.

Then moved.

The distance improved slightly.

Still off.

But closer.

He noticed that.

Small.

But real.

He tried again.

Same result.

Still not correct.

But less wrong.

Kai exhaled slowly.

It was working.

Barely.

But working.

He looked at Jin-Sensei again.

No reaction.

No acknowledgment.

Nothing.

Mateo spoke.

"Keep going."

Kai looked at him.

"You think this works?"

Mateo nodded.

"It has to."

Kai frowned.

"Why?"

Mateo's answer was immediate.

"Because no one is going to fix it for you."

Silence followed.

Luna said nothing.

Jin-Sensei said nothing.

The system continued.

Kai stepped back into position.

The pressure felt different now.

Not just from failure.

From expectation.

There was no support.

No safety.

No fallback.

Only performance.

Only adjustment.

Only results.

Tiger Squad stood together.

But functioned alone.

No guidance.

No reinforcement.

No shared structure.

Just individuals under observation.

Kai felt it clearly.

This was not neglect.

This was intentional.

And it made everything harder.
