Chapter 18 - Misunderstanding Strength

"Controlled entry."

The drill sounded simple.

It was not.

"Three exchanges," Sensei Hodge said. "No wasted movement. No forced contact. Precision only."

No demonstration this time.

They were expected to understand.

Or fail.

Kai stepped forward with Tiger Squad.

Mateo first.

Luna next.

Kai last.

They took position.

Short distance.

Measured.

"Begin."

Mateo moved.

Small step.

Exact timing.

He entered the space without breaking structure.

Strike.

Stopped clean.

Point.

He reset.

No excess motion.

No effort wasted.

Luna followed.

Slower.

But controlled.

She did not force the entry.

She waited.

Then moved.

Her distance remained intact.

Her balance held.

Strike.

Clean.

Point.

She stepped back.

Kai stepped forward.

He focused.

Watched the space.

Measured the distance.

Then moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

His step carried too far.

His weight shifted forward.

His balance broke.

His strike came late.

Uncontrolled.

No point.

They reset.

Kai exhaled.

He adjusted.

This time, he slowed down.

A little.

Then pushed forward again.

Faster than needed.

His foot landed heavy.

His center lifted.

The structure broke.

He overextended.

The counter came.

Clean.

Point.

Kai stepped back.

Frustration rising.

He reset.

Again.

This time, he went harder.

More speed.

More force.

He closed distance aggressively.

Tried to overwhelm the exchange.

It failed instantly.

His balance collapsed.

His strike missed entirely.

The counter landed again.

Point.

Kai clenched his jaw.

This was wrong.

It should not be this difficult.

He had strength.

He had speed.

He was pushing.

Trying.

Driving forward.

It should be enough.

"Again," Sensei Hodge said.

Kai stepped forward.

He did not slow down.

He pushed harder.

Faster entry.

More force behind the step.

More aggression in the movement.

It broke worse.

His footing slipped.

His upper body leaned forward.

His guard opened.

The counter came immediately.

Point.

Kai stepped back.

Breathing heavier now.

He looked at Mateo.

No wasted motion.

No visible effort.

Just control.

He looked at Luna.

Calm.

Measured.

She moved again.

Her turn.

She stepped in.

Slower than before.

More deliberate.

She did not rush.

She did not force the exchange.

She waited.

Then entered.

Perfect distance.

Perfect timing.

Strike.

Point.

She stepped back.

No tension.

No strain.

Kai watched her.

She was not stronger than him.

Not faster.

But she was more controlled.

That was the difference.

Kai stepped forward again.

He adjusted.

Tried to slow down.

For a moment.

Then pushed again.

Too much.

Too fast.

Too early.

The same result.

Failure.

Over and over.

Jin-Sensei watched.

Silent.

No correction.

No interruption.

Kai noticed that.

Again.

No help.

No guidance.

Just observation.

He reset.

Again.

He tried to force control this time.

Forced himself to move slower.

It felt wrong.

Too slow.

Too passive.

He pushed forward anyway.

The moment broke.

His timing slipped.

The exchange failed.

Again.

Kai stepped back.

Frustration building.

He looked at Jin-Sensei.

Waiting.

Nothing.

No correction.

No explanation.

Just silence.

Kai exhaled sharply.

Fine.

He would fix it himself.

He stepped forward again.

Faster.

More aggressive.

Trying to break through the problem.

Trying to overpower the mistake.

It failed again.

Worse this time.

He stumbled.

Caught himself.

Too late.

Point.

Kai stood still.

Breathing uneven.

He looked at his hands.

Then forward.

At the space.

At the distance he could not control.

At the timing he could not read.

He looked at Luna again.

She moved.

Calm.

Precise.

Minimal effort.

Maximum result.

He looked at Mateo.

Same.

Control.

Consistency.

No wasted motion.

Kai understood something.

But only partially.

They were not hesitating.

They were not weak.

They were controlled.

But in his mind, that translated differently.

They were holding back.

That was it.

They were limiting themselves.

That was why it looked clean.

Kai clenched his fists.

He stepped forward again.

"I just need to push harder," he said.

No one responded.

Mateo did not look at him.

Luna remained still.

Jin-Sensei said nothing.

Kai took another step.

Reset his stance.

Lowered it.

Forced it.

"I can break through it."

Silence.

Kai nodded to himself.

That was the answer.

More effort.

More force.

More speed.

He just needed to reach their level.

By pushing harder than they did.

He stepped forward again.

Ready.

Unaware that he was moving further away from understanding.
