Chapter 23 - Individual Thinking

"Clarke."

Kai stepped in immediately.

No hesitation.

This was his moment.

The space narrowed again.

Everything outside of it faded.

He set his stance.

Lower.

More controlled than before.

Not perfect.

But ready.

He focused on the opponent.

Not the system.

Not the rotation.

The opponent.

That was what mattered.

Win the exchange.

Prove it.

"Begin."

Kai moved first.

Fast.

Direct.

He closed distance aggressively.

His timing was off.

But he pushed through it.

His strike came strong.

Unrefined.

Uncontrolled.

The opponent adjusted.

Small step.

Clean counter.

Point.

Kai froze for a fraction of a second.

Reset.

Too fast.

He had rushed.

Fine.

He adjusted.

Second exchange.

He waited.

Barely.

Then moved again.

Still too early.

Still forcing it.

The distance collapsed.

His balance shifted.

The counter came again.

Point.

Kai exhaled sharply.

He could feel it.

The gap.

But also the opportunity.

He just needed to push harder.

Faster.

Third exchange.

He stepped in aggressively.

More speed.

More force.

He forced the entry.

The opponent reacted.

Late.

Kai's strike landed.

Clean.

Point.

Kai felt it immediately.

There.

That worked.

That was it.

He stepped back.

Reset.

He ignored everything else.

That was the answer.

Pressure.

Speed.

Force.

Overwhelm the exchange.

He stepped in again.

Faster.

The timing broke.

The structure collapsed.

The instructor raised a hand.

"Stop."

Kai stepped back.

Frowning.

"What?"

"Out of sequence," the instructor said.

Kai frowned deeper.

"I scored."

"You broke the structure."

Kai clenched his jaw.

That did not matter.

He had landed the point.

That was what mattered.

He looked back toward Tiger Squad.

Mateo was watching.

His expression was sharp.

Not impressed.

Not neutral.

Frustrated.

Luna stood beside him.

Still.

Observing.

Kai stepped back into position.

He had proven something.

At least once.

That mattered.

"Next."

The system moved on.

Kai returned to the line.

Mateo spoke immediately.

"That was wrong."

Kai turned.

"I scored."

Mateo shook his head.

"You broke the structure."

Kai stepped closer.

"So what?"

Mateo's gaze hardened.

"So it doesn't count."

Kai frowned.

"It should."

"It doesn't."

Kai exhaled sharply.

"I proved I can do it."

Mateo stepped forward.

"You proved you can disrupt the system."

Kai clenched his fists.

"I'm trying to win."

Mateo's response was immediate.

"This isn't about you winning."

Kai paused.

That did not make sense.

Then what was it about?

He looked at Luna.

She spoke quietly.

"You entered outside the sequence."

Kai frowned.

"I saw an opening."

"You created it," Luna said.

A pause.

"And broke the structure doing it."

Kai shook his head.

"That shouldn't matter if it works."

Mateo's voice cut in.

"It didn't work."

Kai stepped forward.

"I scored."

Mateo held his gaze.

"And lost the attempt."

Silence.

Kai felt it.

The contradiction.

He had succeeded.

But failed.

At the same time.

That made no sense.

Mateo continued.

"You don't understand the test."

Kai's irritation rose.

"Then explain it."

"No."

Again.

No explanation.

Only rejection.

Kai exhaled sharply.

"I'm not going to just stand there and wait."

Mateo nodded once.

"Then you'll keep failing."

Kai stepped back.

Frustration building.

He looked forward again.

The system continued.

Unchanged.

Other students entered.

Executed.

Exited.

Clean.

Precise.

Within structure.

Kai watched.

He saw openings.

Moments where he could push through.

Score.

Win.

But they did not take them.

They stayed within the sequence.

Restricted.

Controlled.

It looked wrong to him.

They were holding back.

They were limiting themselves.

That was why they looked clean.

Kai understood.

Or thought he did.

He stepped forward again.

Ready for his next attempt.

He would do it again.

But better.

Faster.

Cleaner.

Still his way.

Behind him, Mateo spoke quietly.

"You're working against us."

Kai did not turn.

"I'm working to win."

Mateo's response came immediately.

"That's the problem."

Kai did not answer.

He focused forward.

On the next exchange.

On the next chance.

On proving himself.

Ignoring everything else.

The system moved.

And Kai moved within it.

But not with it.
