Chapter 15 - Forced Belonging

The next drill required timing.

Not speed.

Not strength.

Timing.

That alone made it difficult for Kai.

"Three-step entry," Sensei Hodge said. "Controlled sequence. No overlap."

The demonstration was short.

Step.

Pause.

Step.

Strike.

Reset.

No explanation.

No breakdown.

"Begin."

Eagle moved first.

Clean.

Perfect spacing.

No collision.

No hesitation.

Viper followed.

Faster.

Still controlled.

Elephant.

Stable.

Rhino.

Forceful.

Then Tiger.

Mateo stepped forward.

"Follow my count," he said.

Kai noticed it immediately.

Mateo was setting the pace again.

Taking control.

"One."

Step.

"Two."

Pause.

"Three."

Strike.

Clean.

Luna matched it.

Exact timing.

No delay.

Kai moved.

Late.

He tried to catch up.

His second step overlapped Mateo's third.

The sequence broke.

"Reset," Mateo said.

Kai exhaled sharply.

"You're going too fast."

Mateo looked at him.

"No. You're going too slow."

Kai stepped forward.

"Then say it clearer."

"I just did."

Kai shook his head.

"This isn't working."

"It works," Mateo replied. "You're the problem."

Kai felt irritation rise.

"I'm trying to match you."

"You're trying to force it," Mateo said.

Kai stepped closer.

"I'll lead it."

The words came out before he thought.

Silence followed.

Brief.

Sharp.

Mateo looked at him.

Flat.

"No."

Kai ignored him.

"One," Kai said.

He stepped.

Too fast.

"Two."

He moved again.

No pause.

"Three."

The strike came early.

The sequence collapsed completely.

Mateo stepped back.

Luna stopped.

The drill broke.

Kai looked at them.

"See? We just need to adjust the pace."

Mateo stared at him.

Unimpressed.

"You skipped the structure."

Kai frowned.

"I changed it."

"You broke it."

Kai's voice rose slightly.

"It doesn't have to be exact every time."

Mateo's response was immediate.

"Yes, it does."

Kai stepped forward again.

"Then how are we supposed to improve?"

"By executing it correctly."

Kai laughed once.

Short.

Dry.

"That doesn't fix anything."

"It fixes everything," Mateo said.

Kai shook his head.

"No. It just keeps us stuck."

Mateo stepped forward.

Now close.

Direct.

"We're stuck because of you."

The words landed clean.

Kai felt them.

But pushed back immediately.

"That's not true."

"It is," Mateo said. "Every time you change the sequence, you make it worse."

Kai clenched his fists.

"I'm trying to make it better."

"You're trying to prove something."

The words hit.

Accurate.

Kai did not respond immediately.

Mateo continued.

"You think if you take control, you belong here."

Kai's jaw tightened.

"I do belong here."

"Then act like it," Mateo said. "Follow the structure."

Kai stepped forward again.

"I'm not going to just stand there and copy you."

"Then leave."

The word came without hesitation.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Kai held his ground.

"I'm not leaving."

Mateo nodded once.

"Then stop making it worse."

Luna spoke quietly.

"Reset."

Kai looked at her.

She did not meet his gaze.

"Follow the sequence," she said.

No emotion.

No engagement.

Just instruction.

Kai exhaled slowly.

Frustration still there.

Pushing.

He stepped back into position.

"One," Mateo said.

Step.

"Two."

Pause.

"Three."

Strike.

Luna matched.

Clean.

Kai followed.

Late.

But closer.

Still off.

Still behind.

But within the structure.

The sequence held.

Barely.

Then ended.

Kai stepped back.

Breathing steady.

But irritated.

This was not enough.

Not fast enough.

Not direct enough.

He stepped forward again.

"I can speed it up."

Mateo did not respond.

Luna remained silent.

Kai continued.

"We're too slow. That's why we're last."

No answer.

Kai looked at them.

"You don't think that matters?"

Mateo spoke.

"It matters when it's correct."

Kai shook his head.

"You're too rigid."

Mateo's expression did not change.

"And you're too unstable."

The words ended it.

Clear.

Final.

Kai stopped speaking.

Luna did not intervene again.

She had disengaged.

Not emotionally.

Functionally.

Mateo returned to position.

Focused.

Done with the conversation.

Kai stood there for a moment longer.

Then stepped back.

Into place.

Silence settled.

The drill continued.

Kai followed.

No longer speaking.

No longer trying to lead.

But not aligned either.

His movements were still off.

Still slightly disruptive.

Still out of sync.

But now he was contained.

Separated.

Even within the same line.

Mateo executed.

Luna stabilized.

Kai followed.

Alone.

Within the group.

But not part of it.

The structure remained.

But the distance between them increased.

Not physical.

Functional.

Kai felt it.

He had tried to force his way in.

To take control.

To prove something.

It had done the opposite.

It had pushed him further out.

He stood in position.

Same squad.

Same structure.

Different place.

More isolated than before.
