Chapter 13 - THE BARRIER BREAK

Part One: The Third Morning

The third day of the Games began with rain.

Not water. The Dream World did not have rain like the human world. This was memory rain droplets of condensed dream-stuff that fell from the aurora sky, each one carrying a fragment of a forgotten dream. They sparkled as they fell, gold and silver and pale blue, bursting against the crystal arena floor like tiny stars.

Muken stood at the window of his room, watching the rain. His shadow stretched behind him, still and patient.

"Strange," Kage said.

"What is?"

"The rain. It feels like... memories. Someone's memories. A child. A garden. A dog that died."

Muken closed his eyes. He could almost see it. A flash of green grass. A warm sun. A small hand reaching out to touch soft fur.

"Whose memory is it?"

"No one's. It is just... residue. Leftover. Floating until it finds someone to dream it."

Muken opened his eyes. "That is sad."

"That is the Dream World. Nothing is wasted. Everything lingers."

A knock on the door. Shiori.

"We leave in ten minutes. The Barrier Break event is first today. After that, the duels." She paused. "Eat something."

She left.

Muken dressed quickly. His grey uniform was damp from the humidity. The crescent shadow emblem above his heart seemed darker today.

He joined the others in the common room. Haru had made tea. Ren was pacing. Yuki was reading the same book, still not turning pages.

"The Barrier Break," Shiori said, "is about precision. Not power. Each team faces a series of magical barriers. We must dismantle them without destroying them. Points are awarded for speed and accuracy."

"Sounds boring," Ren muttered.

"It is not boring. It is difficult." Shiori looked at Muken. "Your shadow can sense the structure of magic. That will help."

Muken nodded. "I will do what I can."

"The Horobi Tou will cheat," Ren said. "We all saw what they did yesterday."

"We cannot prove anything. So we focus on ourselves." Shiori stood. "Let us go."

As they walked to the arena, Muken felt a presence behind him. He turned. No one was there. But his shadow pulsed.

"Someone is following us," Kage said. "From the Horobi Tou."

Muken scanned the crowd. A grey uniform disappeared around a corner.

"They are watching our every move."

"Let them watch," Muken thought. "They will see what we can do."

But his hands were shaking.

Part Two: The Arena Floor

The rain had stopped by the time they reached the arena.

The crystal floor was slick, reflecting the aurora sky like a mirror. The stands were full, the crowd buzzing with anticipation. The other teams were already in position.

The Horobi Tou stood apart, as always. Kuro's long black hair was damp, clinging to her pale face. Her eyes found Muken immediately.

"She is watching," Kage said.

"I know."

"She is waiting for something."

Muken looked away.

The Grand Speaker's voice echoed across the arena.

"Welcome to the third event: the Barrier Break."

A holographic image appeared above the arena, showing a complex maze of glowing walls, each one a different color.

"Each team will enter a separate chamber. Inside, you will find a series of magical barriers. You must dismantle them in order, from simplest to most complex. The barriers are designed to test your understanding of dream magic, your precision, and your ability to work as a team."

The image zoomed in on a golden barrier.

"The first barrier is simple. It requires only basic magical control. The final barrier is complex. It will require all of you working together."

The Grand Speaker paused.

"Lethal force is forbidden. Destroying a barrier rather than dismantling it will result in a penalty. The team that completes all barriers in the shortest time wins."

The crowd cheered.

Shiori gathered the team. "We go in order. Muken, you sense the structure. Tell us where the weak points are. Yuki, you handle wind barriers. Ren, fire barriers. Haru, you stabilize any backlash. I will coordinate."

"And if something goes wrong?" Ren asked.

"Then we adapt."

They entered their chamber.

But as the door closed behind them, Muken heard a whisper. Not from Kage. From the walls.

"The Horobi Tou have already failed. But they will not leave quietly."

He turned. No one else had heard it.

"Kage, did you..."

"Yes. The arena is listening. Or something inside it."

Muken pushed the thought aside. They had barriers to break.

✦ ✦ ✦

Part Three: The First Barriers

The chamber was smaller than Muken expected. Barely twenty feet across, with walls of smooth, dark crystal. In the center, a series of glowing barriers floated in a line.

The first barrier was gold. It pulsed gently, like a heartbeat.

"Simple," Kage said. "It is a lock. No trap. Just a test of will."

Shiori raised her hand. Her water magic flowed toward the barrier, thin and precise. It touched the golden surface. The barrier flickered, then dissolved.

"One down. Next."

The second barrier was silver. It was covered in shifting patterns, like ripples on water.

"Wind barrier," Kage said. "It responds to pressure. Too much force and it will shatter."

Yuki stepped forward. She raised her hands, and a gentle breeze flowed from her palms. It touched the barrier, matching its rhythm. The silver surface smoothed, then faded.

"Two down."

The third barrier was bronze. It was hot to the touch, radiating waves of heat.

"Fire barrier," Kage said. "It wants to be met with equal heat. Not more. Not less."

Ren cracked his knuckles. He raised one hand, and a small flame appeared. He brought it close to the barrier. The bronze surface glowed brighter, then dimmed, then vanished.

"Three down."

Shiori looked at Muken. "Your turn."

Muken stepped forward. The fourth barrier was different. It pulsed with a dark light.

"This one is unstable," Kage said. "Someone tampered with it."

"The Horobi Tou?"

"Probably. They want to slow us down."

Muken relayed the warning. Shiori's eyes narrowed.

"Can we still dismantle it?"

"Yes. But it will be dangerous. If we touch it wrong, it will explode."

Muken swallowed. "We have to try."

He raised his shadow.

✦ ✦ ✦

Part Four: The Complex Barrier

The fourth barrier was different.

It was not a single color. It shifted, cycling through gold, silver, bronze, and colors Muken had never seen. It pulsed erratically, as if it were alive.

"This is a composite barrier," Kage said. "It requires all of you at once."

Shiori nodded. "What do we do?"

"Each of you must touch it with your magic at the same time. Water, fire, wind, and..." Kage hesitated. "And shadow."

Muken relayed the information.

Shiori frowned. "Shadow? The barrier is designed for dream magic. Your shadow is..."

"Different. I know."

"Can you do it?"

Muken looked at his shadow. It stretched toward the barrier, curious.

"I can try," Kage said. "But I have never done anything like this."

"You have to."

"Then we will."

Shiori positioned the team around the barrier. Yuki on the left, Ren on the right, Haru behind, Shiori in front, Muken at the center.

"On my count," Shiori said. "Three. Two. One. Now."

Water, fire, wind, and shadow touched the barrier at the same moment.

The barrier screamed.

Not a sound. A pressure. A psychic wave that pushed against Muken's skull. His vision blurred. His shadow writhed.

"Hold," Kage gasped. "Do not let go."

Muken gritted his teeth. He could feel the barrier fighting them. It did not want to be dismantled. It wanted to resist.

"More," Shiori said. "Push harder."

Ren's fire flared. Yuki's wind howled. Haru's healing magic stabilized the backlash.

Muken poured his will into his shadow. The barrier flickered. Cracks appeared in its surface.

Then it shattered.

Not dissolved. Shattered. Pieces of colored light rained down around them.

The chamber went silent.

Shiori looked at the pieces. "Was that supposed to happen?"

"It was not," Kage said. "But it worked."

Muken relayed the message.

"We move on," Shiori said. "There are more barriers."

But as they walked toward the final barrier, Muken noticed something. The walls of the chamber were trembling. The tampering had spread.

"We need to finish quickly," Kage said. "The chamber is destabilizing."

Muken told Shiori. Her face went pale.

"Move faster."

✦ ✦ ✦

Part Five: The Final Barrier

The fifth barrier was black.

It absorbed light. It absorbed sound. It absorbed hope.

"This is different," Kage said. "This is not a test. This is a trap."

Muken's blood ran cold. "What kind of trap?"

"It is designed to drain magic. Anyone who touches it will lose their power. Temporarily. But long enough to lose the event."

Muken told Shiori.

Her face tightened. "Can we bypass it?"

"No. It is the final barrier. You must dismantle it to complete the event."

"Then we find another way."

"There is no other way."

Muken looked at the black barrier. It pulsed slowly, like a sleeping animal.

"What if I absorb it?"

Shiori stared at him. "What?"

"My shadow can consume magic. If I absorb the barrier, it will be gone. No one has to touch it."

"That is not dismantling. That is destruction."

"The rules say we cannot use lethal force. They do not say we cannot absorb."

Shiori was silent for a long moment.

"Do it."

Muken stepped forward. His shadow stretched toward the black barrier.

"This will hurt," Kage said.

"I know."

"Are you ready?"

"No. But do it anyway."

The shadow touched the barrier.

Pain exploded behind Muken's eyes. He felt the barrier's hunger, its need to drain, its emptiness. It was like Kodoku. A fragment of the void.

Kage began to pull.

The barrier resisted. It did not want to be consumed. It wanted to consume.

Muken fell to his knees. His nose bled. His vision swam.

"Muken!" Haru ran toward him.

"Stay back!" Shiori grabbed her arm. "He said he could do this. Let him."

The barrier shrank. Its black surface cracked. Silver light bled through.

Then it was gone.

Muken collapsed.

The chamber was empty. The barriers were all dismantled.

Shiori knelt beside him. "Can you stand?"

"No."

"Then we wait."

The horn sounded. The event was over.

As Haru healed Muken's wounds, he looked at the spot where the black barrier had been. A single dark stain remained on the crystal floor.

"It left something behind," Kage said. "A seed."

Muken reached out. His fingers touched the stain. It was warm.

He pulled back. The stain was gone.

But he could feel it inside his shadow. Small. Waiting.

"What did you do?" he thought.

"I do not know. But we will find out."

Part Six: The Results

The teams gathered in the center of the arena.

The Grand Speaker's voice echoed.

"The results of the Barrier Break event."

She read them aloud. The Shin Tou placed first. The Gin Tou placed second. The Mizu Tou placed third.

Hikari Tou placed fourth.

But the Horobi Tou had been disqualified.

"They used corrupted magic," the Grand Speaker said. "The barriers are designed to test skill, not destruction. The Horobi Tou destroyed their barriers rather than dismantling them. They are disqualified from this event."

The crowd murmured.

Kuro's expression did not change. She looked at Muken.

"She does not care," Kage said. "The event was never her goal."

Muken leaned on Shiori, his legs still weak.

"What is her goal?" he whispered.

"I do not know. But we will find out."

As the teams dispersed, Kuro walked past Muken. She stopped.

"The seed," she whispered. "It chose you."

Muken's heart stopped. "What seed?"

But she was already walking away.

"She knew," Kage said. "She knew about the stain. About the seed."

"What is it?"

"I do not know. But it is growing."

Muken looked at his shadow. In its center, barely visible, was a small black speck. Pulsing.

Part Seven: The Evening Before the Duels

That night, Muken lay on his bed, staring at the ceiling.

His shadow was still. Exhausted.

"You pushed too hard," Kage said.

"I had no choice."

"There is always a choice. You chose to absorb the barrier. You chose to risk yourself."

"And I would do it again."

"I know. That is what frightens me."

Muken closed his eyes.

"Tomorrow are the duels."

"Yes."

"One on one. No team. Just me and my shadow."

"Are you afraid?"

"Yes."

"Good. Fear keeps us alive."

Muken did not sleep.

He stared at the ceiling, waiting for dawn.

The ceiling had no cracks.

But he could still see them. In his mind. The cracks of his old room. The cracks of his old life.

He was not that boy anymore.

But sometimes, he missed the simplicity of staring at nothing.

His shadow pulsed. The black speck had grown. Now it was the size of a coin.

"It is feeding on something," Kage said. "On you. On me. I cannot stop it."

Muken touched the speck. It was warm.

"What will it become?"

"I do not know. But we will find out tomorrow. In the duels."

Muken sat up. He looked at his hands. The dark veins from the absorption were still faintly visible.

He was changing. Becoming something new.

He just did not know what.

And tomorrow, the world would see.
